Is there a decent step by step guide for recast newbies like myself? I am thinking I had better learn how to do this.

I'd prefer to use plastic vs. resin assuming I have the skills, time, money, and patience.

Try these for size they helped me when I first got back to doing it. I used to do it for a company back in the day but never really took it in as we just made what we weree told and if we messed up we just did it again.
