grebo guru Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 Ahoy all, While perusing Japanese fan art websites, I came across a guy who is a wizard at transforming mecha. I cannot find the link right now, but once I do I'll post it. In the meantime, here's his alternative take on the VF-1. It's modest, but clever. Enjoy! Quote
armentage Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 I love that design! The shoulders meet where the arms are, and the "gunpod" is actually the arms! Also looks like he has lasers pointed in both direction, with the head and shoulder serving to hold 4 laser cannons. Discarding the backpack seems like a great idea too! Quote
Mephistopheles Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 I'm not a big fan of the arm transformation but I like the rest. I'd change it so the fins on the back of the battroid would lay down. Quote
Knight26 Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 seen it before, not a fan but it is an interesting redesign. Quote
grebo guru Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 The thing that's mind-boggling about this fellow's site is that he's done alternate versions of zillions of anime mecha. Gaiking, Mospeada, Bryger, Baxinger, Metaljack, Kamen Rider, Megaranger, Gaogaigar, D-Garn, Dangaioh, Bubblegum Crisis, Tobikage, etc etc etc... The list goes on and on. Amazingly, he's done original, alternate transformations and mecha designs for all of these. I mean, it's just incredible. Quote
anime52k8 Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 can we get a link to this guys site? Quote
grebo guru Posted November 14, 2006 Author Posted November 14, 2006 One of the things I love about this design is how the part behind the canopy (in fighter mode) turns around 180 degrees to cover the cockpit in Battroid mode. I always thought that the magically-appearing cockpit cover was much more of a "magical" element than the VF-1's notorious hip rearrangement. I tell ya, this guy is clever! I'm still trying to unearth the link to his site. I'll post it when I find it. Quote

I understood the heat shield cover was found under the back plate and deployed during transformation. Quote
mojacko Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 the design is quite interesting.....the arm cannon is similar w/ TF's Shockwave!!! Cool!!! Quote
kensei Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Ain't my cup of tea, but I must admit, that is a very clever method of transformation and incorporation of all parts. Quote
grebo guru Posted November 14, 2006 Author Posted November 14, 2006 It actually is supposed to come out from under the chest plate, not the back plate. That's already pretty iffy with most VF-1s... Now look at the VF-1D and tell me how that big heat shield cover can come out from under that chest cover. Especially considering how "chopped" the central part of it is. Anyway, Im not actually here to nitpick about my beloved VF-1. I just was making a point about the cleverness of this guy's alternative design. I understood the heat shield cover was found under the back plate and deployed during transformation. Quote
Knight26 Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Actually somebody, I forget whoe figured out how to do it on a VF-1D using Cap'n A's mod kit, so it can physically be done. It is just harder on the VF-1D. Now on the VE/VT-1 it would be much harder due to the bulge, but that is a different issue. Quote
the white drew carey Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 I'm not very impressed at all. All he's done is incorporate some features form SK's subsequent VF's and combined them all into one simple-looking hodgepodge: He's got the shoulder from the VF-9, the top of the intake/chestplate integration comes from the VF-3000. And I don't really like how the body of the VF comes forward in GERWALK mode. It loosk to squat. Not my cup of tea. Quote
Shmitty Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 Not my favorite VF, but still really inginuitive. I like how the side covers on the torso don't just magically appear, since they're the missile pods. Not that having explosive ordinance that close to the pilot really seems like a good idea. Quote
armentage Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 As for it being "squat"... i think that's just the artists idea of proportions. You should really be weighing it on its mechanical merits, because thats what he's clearly trying to improve on. Quote
kensei Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 I cannot see how the arms can get into position in GERWALK without conflicting with the legs. Quote
grebo guru Posted November 16, 2006 Author Posted November 16, 2006 Exactly. The thing to look at here is concept more than execution. I'm still looking for the link to the guy's site, but I can tell you that all his other re-engineered transformable mecha also look squat. It's just his style. BTW, attached is another of his re-engineered designs: the "Mospeada" (or "Cyclone", if you like roboatech) Ride Armor. Again, it's rather squat. But also very clever! As for it being "squat"... i think that's just the artists idea of proportions. You should really be weighing it on its mechanical merits, because thats what he's clearly trying to improve on. Quote
Knight26 Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 (edited) Now that MOSEADA I like, though you lose the arm missile launchers, and the engine block seems to disappear somewhere. Edited November 16, 2006 by Knight26 Quote
Knight26 Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 Found his page: http://www.ne.jp/asahi/mecha/keida/kanzen-top.html He also shows the transformation sequence: http://www.ne.jp/asahi/mecha/keida/kanzen-...lkyrie-hen.html And his Regult and Gluag: http://www.ne.jp/asahi/mecha/keida/kanzen-...&glaug.html Amongst many other things. Personnaly Really do not like his REgult and Glaug, he made them way too small. Quote
grebo guru Posted November 16, 2006 Author Posted November 16, 2006 Heyyyyy, good job!!! Thanks, Knight26! kensei Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 Great fan made stuff, but personally I doubt like it as I see no practicality. Quote
mister_e Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 The arm reminds me of Mega-Man or Samus from Metroid . Also, I don't like the head, too...bubbly I think. But still, it's neat to see an alternate interpretation of our beloved VF-1 Quote

You should really be weighing it on its mechanical merits, because thats what he's clearly trying to improve on. I am weighing it on it's mechanical merits. Look at it in GERWALK mode, the artist clearly has a concept in mind: The body of the VF (chestplate, nacelles/legs, backplate) move forward in GERWALK. The vertical stabs move even more forward as well. Hence, it looks 'squat.' Quote
grebo guru Posted November 17, 2006 Author Posted November 17, 2006 Here ya go Boxer. (It was earlier in this very thread. Ya wacky guy!) UN_MARINE Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 hmm... kinda reminds me of old '80's transforming toys, specifically gobots. interesting, simple... but not too spectacular IMO they're a lot better than some other ideas i've seen though (and i've seen pretty terrible ones) Quote
grebo guru Posted November 19, 2006 Author Posted November 19, 2006 Indeed! Of course, this design isn't as nice as some of the designs you yourself have posted, UNM. Your VFX-1, -2, and -3 are schweetness! You ever plan on inking up those beauties? Oh, here's another VF-like design from another Japanse fan. Dig it: hmm... kinda reminds me of old '80's transforming toys, specifically gobots. interesting, simple... but not too spectacular IMO they're a lot better than some other ideas i've seen though (and i've seen pretty terrible ones) Quote
big F Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 Good images Grebo, these look more gundamesque to me with a bit of Kawamori style Starscream rehash. I like them. Does this guy have any more images ? Quote
UN_MARINE Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 grebo, i like the new images, i think somebody posted them a while back, with the transformation sequence glad you like my stuff hmm... when i'll ink them is a mystery even to me i have a LOT of stuff that'll probably never get inked, they get colored, but not inked ...weird Quote
grebo guru Posted November 19, 2006 Author Posted November 19, 2006 i have a LOT of stuff that'll probably never get inked, they get colored, but not inked ...weird Well post it all, buddy!!! Quote
UN_MARINE Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 that's gonna be one hell of a post if i did a link would be easier silly unfinished but colored stuff Quote
