Wow. If they pull off Home (Free! my favorite part!) this will beat Wii's Mii space hands down. Especially since Nintendo still doesn't have a decent on-line setup. The dancing animations are hilarious. :D

Just got MotorStorm. Woohoo! Driving into rockfaces tonight!

Huh. Home reminds me of a simplified version of SecondLife, but integrated with their online multiplayer games. Very neat. From a community standpoint, it really trashes what Nintendo has done with Miis so far.

What will really impress me if Sony and PS3 developers do more with the concept, integrating it into games even further. Like how Miis appear in Wario Ware and Wii Sports, imagine being able to take your avatar from Home and use it as your character in some PS3 games? That could potentially be several flavours of fantastic.

I got Motorstorm as well yesterday, friggin' awesome off-road, rock crashing racing. :D

Once I sell of my Xbox 360 I want to get a PS3. How are these babies? Are they noticeably better graphically than the 360? How well do the controllers work? Will my system crash and DIE on me in a few months? I've taken apart my PS2 and put it back together many times, and it works just fine, and I've had it for years. I hope the Ps3 is as dependable.

Graphics? It kind of depends on the game you play if its both offered on PS3 and 360. But visuals are pretty sweet and playing on any Hi-Def monitor makes it even better. Controllers are activated via the PS button in the middle, and comes with a USB cable to charge them. They are awfully light, hopefully we can see a Sixaxis 2 w/ rumble support soon. I got my system at launch, bumped the 20GB to a 120GB hard drive and it's been working since (knocks on wood).

I love my PS3 and definitely recommend one, Casca. I use it as a Blu-ray player just about every day or two and before Motorstorm didn't have the need to buy a game as I posted on the last page. ;)

Home looks very interesting. I'm not as interested in it's pseudo-social/myspace type aspects but sounds like a great way to one-up both the 360 Achievements & Mii.

Man so far I SUCK at this game. Fame ranking: ZERO ...but it's only been four races. It's so pretty bouncing off rockfaces and blowing up in midair. I suppose I should pay more attention to the race then the pretty pictures...:lol:

Zero frills in the online setup. BUT Zero lag and I'm running my PS3 wireless. So pretty.......

Kotaku's review pretty much sums it up for me.

I just want a PS3 for three reasons: Final Fantasy XIII - Devil May Cry - and Metal Gear. Even if I didn't have a blazing hatred for Microsoft (which just recently spawned after my 360 crashed for no apparent reason other than sh---ty manufacturng) I'd still have nightmares about not being able to play these games. Hope my 360 sells on ebay...

you should check out the Sony Keynote from the current Game Developer Convention. You can see it at www.gamespot.com at their GDC section or their ps3 section, or just look at their recent clips on the right side. The "HOME" thing and their "mylittleplanet" looks very intresting. There seem to be lots of other good things/news from Sony too.

Oh, and you got to check out Nintendo's keynote too, love that wife-o-meter

Just picked up my Motorstorm...between that and VF5, the PS3 is really starting to show it's colors. Add Heavenly Sword, Lair, and Home in the next couple months and the future looks good.

Dangit... I want my xbox 360 back from Microsoft-Perpetual-Repair-Land so I can SELL THAT THING.

UK and the rest of Europe gets the crap from Sony as usual, not only do we have to pay about $200-$300 more than the USA and Japan we now find out that Sony is removing backwards compatabiliy from the European version and not even bothering to release the low spec PS3, they only intend to sell the 60 gig version. And Sony still has a ban on shops importing PS3s from the USA and Japan :(:angry::angry::angry:

You will still have backward compatability dude. The PS3 is strong enough to do it all in software rather than with the old PS2 chip.

And frankly I wish they droped the 20G model from the US too. I couldn't find one when I had the money. I ended up spending anouther $50 just for an ethernet cable long enough to reach my wi-fi router. (It's plugged into the back.)

I imagine the price difference has something to do with average exchange rates. (That's a wild guess though.)

The truth is Sony craps on all of us equally. ;)

Just like to point out I spotted 20 PS3's at Wal-Mart today, possibly more (I wasn't going to check EVERY rack for a second row). That's a $24,000 "bounty" for being on the shelves more than 5 mins. :)

If you had spotted them the 1st week of Jan, then you'd have a shot. :p

It's almost launch time in Europe, so let us sum up Sony/S. Europe doing:

- 5+ months delay for Europe

- Imports from online retailers were more or less a no go, because of lik-sang lawsuit, susequently scaring other retailers. Why the fear, it's not as though the (loyal) hardcore gamers would outnumber your avarage Joe?

- No selection, it's 60Gb all the way...

- Modified Hardware, no PS2 chip => software emulation for downwards compatability => less compatability for PS2 titles. IMO HW emulation > SW emulation.

- And the best of all: Europe pays higher prices for the console and the games. Sony says 600 Euros is supposed to be a magical barrier for consumer? Sony should really clean out their sales/marketing departments. I'm fully aware of the exchange/import taxes thing, but I don't think it justifies the current price tag.

Ha, and people have the cheek to say Sony doesn't care about it's European customers...

Here is hoping that gamers in Europe give Sony a cold shoulder, but that probably won't happen.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. The PS3's performance so far has been pretty cold-shoulderish already. Assuming this trend holds true for Europe, Sony might actually wake up and get a clue.

- Sony's Phil Harrison revealed that PS3 firmware 1.6 will be released on March 23, 2007, which will support backward compatibility to over 1200 PS2 titles for the PAL version of PS3. New firmware also allows PSP to playback media streaming from PS3, or view PS3 web browser on PSP.

- Epic Games confirmed that the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament III will have USB keyboard, mouse and Sixaxis controller support, you can use the movement sensor function to look around.

Well, my most-looked-forward-to game, Warhawk, is basically dead. At least, the version of it I wanted to play. I think that was my first PSX game--so old, it came in a DVD case (only ever had 2 PSX games that came like that)

Guess I'll wait for FF13, or Ace Combat 6.

Hey, I got one of those Asia version Gundam Musou for ps3. Why didn't anyone mention it comes with a clear rx-78 kit? and I thought I have been a bigger sucker.

BTW the game follow the previous Gundam games' footsteps -- it still suck, but less suck compare to most of the previous ones just because it is prettier.

Got 1.6 last night. Synched up my MX5000 bluetooth keyboard and mouse without a hitch. Now that the USB dongle doesn't bother me. Oh well. Did some browsing, too and can't say I really noticed the changes on the browser, though I did play with zoom a bit. Browse MW'ed a bit. I definitely hope we can do custom keymappings / keyboard & mouse configs (page up/down/home/end in the web browser at the very least, as well as mapping the other L1/L2/R1/R2/R3 keys, etc).

I also did some folding@home briefly, too. Maybe this weekend I'll leave it on so I can monitor it (I've never had a hint of heat / loud fan issues, but want to be there to periodically check up to make sure everything is kosher).

I also tested auto-play and popped in Motorstorm and a couple movies (Stargate, Crank, Casino Royale) and it worked great. Then tested background downloading and grabbed the trailers for transformers and shrek3 (got the notifications during Stargate IIRC). Very neat.

Well this is something you don't see Sony doing everyday:

Sony hands out free 46" HDTVs to the first 100 customers in London

Eager London gamers that waited in line to get their hands on a PlayStation 3 this morning got way more than they may have bargained for before camping out. Sony, obviously in a generous mood, gave the first 100 customers to purchase a £425 ($834 USD) PS3 a free 46" HDTV and a free taxi ride home.

In all, Sony gave away over £250,000 ($490,450 USD) in HDTVs to accompany the PS3 launch. The free taxi ride was most likely a nod to the fact that many customers who showed up to purchase a PS3 might not have exactly had enough room to transport a 46" HDTV back to their homes.

"I feel fantastic. I'm delighted that everyone here also gets a television," said 17-year-old Ritatsu Thomas who was the first buyer in line.

The PS3 has gotten off to a somewhat slow start in the United States and has been consistently outsold by both the Wii and Xbox 360 since its November launch. Sony is confident, however, that the European and Australian launches of its PS3 will help vault it into first place in the next generation console wars. A strong showing in these two regions could help boost the overall global sales numbers of the PS3.

Sony has also had a few months to add features to the PS3's firmware and bulk up its game library to entice European gamers. "There are benefits for European consumers - there are more games available, more Blu-ray movies and we've updated the online PlayStation network," said Sony's Phil Harrison.

Sony had originally planned to launch the PS3 simultaneously worldwide on November 17, 2006. The company announced, however, in early September 2006 that the European launch would be delayed until March 2007. Sony at the time cited problems with manufacturing blue laser diodes as one of the reasons for the delay.

Despite the delay, Sony is ready to conquer Europe and has made 200,000 consoles available for the UK launch.

Someone just shoot me, Sony giving away a $5,000 HDTV for free, plus a cab ride home? Might as well set up the whole damn thing for you.

I also tried the folding at Home. I let it run for approx 8 hours overnight...no issues, unit was the same temperature as when I left it and it had already finished one project and had jumped to the next. I notice that the amount of PS3's folding tripled from last night already whose measly 6,000 some odd units already rivaled the Tflop performance of over a 150,000 Winodows PC's. The difference in power for these calculations with Cell will really make a difference. I'll donate some Cellpower and electricity to the project more often than I thought I would. It benefits a good cause, and the difference made is staggering.

PS3 finally out in the UK, it seems like a quiet launch, usually console launches are shown on TV news, showing all the people queuing up and spending the night, but there was no mention.

Right now I'll wait for the price to fall and see what future games come out for it, all the games available now don't seem to interest me.

Posted

Don't wait for a price drop, as that probably won't happen soon. I plan on buying it when Metal Gear is released, a game that I truly want to own...

A price drop would happen sometime this year or next i hope, cause Blu Ray technology is becoming cheaper and manufacturing becoming easier, so sony won't be able to justify the price of the PS3 based on its Blu Ray anymore. They say thats one of the main reasons PS3 is so expensive in Europe because it uses Blu Ray.

Also I don't want to pay £425 for a PS3, thats about $834 US dollars.
