The title is very pretentious and Scorsese's last flick (The Aviator) was good, but not great. Watching the trailer, it doesn't look as bad as I had once feared, but it also doesn't look nearly as interesting as Infernal Affairs. I loved Infernal Affairs. It was a well conceived departure from the norm and not nearly as melodramatic as most Hong Kong action fare. The two leads Andy Lau and Tony Leung were perfectly cast and gave spot on performances. I also loved the visual style, perfectly shot for a creepy, dangerous type of thriller. If The Departed is to be any good, it's going to have to work extra hard to win me over. I try to be open minded about this, but what they showed in the trailer seems just like a decent cop movie. A lot of the drama, the mood, and style captured in the Infernal Affair seem lost, even though I recognize a bunch of the scenes in the trailer directly taken from the HK movie. I guess many of the HK casting for the Infernal Affair are so spot on and iconic that its really hard to beat. The only part I don't like about the original is that sometimes, the music score feels overly dramatic. As if a not very experienced muscian tried to come up with a very epic soundtrack for the first time, overdoing it on some tracks. Infernal Affair II & III feels much better on the music department. But music aside, Infernal Affair seems to have left very little room for improvement. So not sure of picking a great flick like that for a remake is such a good choice. Especially I'd like to hear what Martin thought of the Hong Kong flick and what direction he's taking with this remake. But I'd honestly expect either polite condescension from a creative standpoint or I'm-listening-to-my-agent-and-lauding-undue-praise-on-the-original no doubt so they can please fans of the original. But most likely, you'll like 1 the most. As 1 is still the meat(main event) of the whole trilogy, while 2 & 3 sort of fill in the gaps and back stories for you. But they do enhance the experience in their own ways, not just some supplimentary stuff you can live without. So go check them out, make sure don't try reading too much on the storyline, in case you get some spoilers. As you may not know, Infernal Affairs is all about 'surprises'. "The Departed" was great; better than great even, fantastic! Without doubt, Scorsese's strongest film since "Casino" and a very worthy remake of the Hong Kong thriller "Infernal Affairs." The master was in top form, the performances were riveting, and so many key scenes from the original were an absolute film-phile's wetdream to see remade. GO SEE THIS FILM! I'm really harsh when this happens cos it's got a lot to live up to. I'm of the opinion that it has to be better than the original to have made it sucessfully worth the bother of remaking.
