UN Spacy Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/thedeparted/ Yes. It's a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs. Quote
Guppy Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 I read about that. Even though it's Scorsese I thought, "why"? I also read somewhere there's a remake planned for Oldboy. I can't see that being remade with any success. Quote
Mr March Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Scorsese is the master, but I really don't think much of this new film. The title is very pretentious and Scorsese's last flick (The Aviator) was good, but not great. Watching the trailer, it doesn't look as bad as I had once feared, but it also doesn't look nearly as interesting as Infernal Affairs. I loved Infernal Affairs. It was a well conceived departure from the norm and not nearly as melodramatic as most Hong Kong action fare. The two leads Andy Lau and Tony Leung were perfectly cast and gave spot on performances. I also loved the visual style, perfectly shot for a creepy, dangerous type of thriller. If The Departed is to be any good, it's going to have to work extra hard to win me over. Quote

The twist at the end wasn't as unexpected as people said t was. But that hallway fight was awesome! Quote
Ladic Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Infernal Affairs 1 and 2 are amazing, this should be too. Quote
Skullsixx Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Scorsese is the master... I'll check it out! Quote
Fortress_Maximus Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Yawns, I doubt his remake can surpass the original Infernal Affairs. Rental at best. Quote
Vermillion21 Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 The original Infernal Affairs was amazing ... will have to wait and see about the remake .. it looks okay .... Quote
Veritas Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 I've read about internal affairs and really wanted to check it out. Now that's already being remade i'll have to gear up and go see it. Looking forward to checking this out afterwards. Quote
mpchi Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 Don't think its that great based on the trailer. I try to be open minded about this, but what they showed in the trailer seems just like a decent cop movie. A lot of the drama, the mood, and style captured in the Infernal Affair seem lost, even though I recognize a bunch of the scenes in the trailer directly taken from the HK movie. I guess many of the HK casting for the Infernal Affair are so spot on and iconic that its really hard to beat. The only part I don't like about the original is that sometimes, the music score feels overly dramatic. As if a not very experienced muscian tried to come up with a very epic soundtrack for the first time, overdoing it on some tracks. Infernal Affair II & III feels much better on the music department. But music aside, Infernal Affair seems to have left very little room for improvement. So not sure of picking a great flick like that for a remake is such a good choice. Quote

UN Spacy Posted August 9, 2006 Author Posted August 9, 2006 Hollywood has been on a tear with all the remade Japanese, Chinese, and Korean flicks. Elisha Cuthbert in My Sassy Girl?!?!?!? Quote
kyatsu Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 dude, infernal affairs just came out several years ago and i really think that the original will always be better than the departed. i know that it's jack, leo, matt, and whoever but you cant beat the OG. i will skip it and see something better. skunkobot Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 I saw the trailer and thought it looked great. Bonus points for being set in MA. Oh, and I haven't seen Internal Affairs, nor did I even know it was a remake of it, so I'll let you guys know how it is independent from that. Quote
kyatsu Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 oh man, you gotta watch the original dude. once you see it, no need to see the departed. trust me on that. kyatsu Quote

Vermillion21 Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 I've seen Infernal Affairs 1, but haven't seen parts 2 and 3. For those of you who have seen 'em, are they worth checking out? Quote
Ladic Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 I only seen 1 and 2. I saw 2 first, since it was the prequel, and loved both. Now I need to get my hands on part 3. Also, Scorcese, showed us he can handle remakes well (Cape Fear). Quote
Vermillion21 Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Cool thanks. Guess I'll have to hunt around for parts 2 and 3 on DVD ... Quote
ComicKaze Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Any comments from Scorcese or the actors about what they thought about the original Infernal Affairs? Quote
Mr March Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 I'd like to think there are some comments that are worthwhile reading. Especially I'd like to hear what Martin thought of the Hong Kong flick and what direction he's taking with this remake. But I'd honestly expect either polite condescension from a creative standpoint or I'm-listening-to-my-agent-and-lauding-undue-praise-on-the-original no doubt so they can please fans of the original. mpchi Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 I've seen Infernal Affairs 1, but haven't seen parts 2 and 3.For those of you who have seen 'em, are they worth checking out? 424656[/snapback] Part 2 & 3 are very good as well. But most likely, you'll like 1 the most. As 1 is still the meat(main event) of the whole trilogy, while 2 & 3 sort of fill in the gaps and back stories for you. But they do enhance the experience in their own ways, not just some supplimentary stuff you can live without. So go check them out, make sure don't try reading too much on the storyline, in case you get some spoilers. As you may not know, Infernal Affairs is all about 'surprises'. Out of the 3 movies, I think 1 is the best, then 3, with 2 being the least favorite(which is still pretty good). Quote
UN Spacy Posted August 15, 2006 Author Posted August 15, 2006 I almost forgot. Marky Mark Wahlberg is also in this flick. Looks like he's just right to play the role he's given. Hehehehehe. Quote

Mr March Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 Though I'm typically loathe to post my ten-minutes-out-of-the-theatre-raging-fanboy-reaction, in this case I must make an exception. "The Departed" was great; better than great even, fantastic! Without doubt, Scorsese's strongest film since "Casino" and a very worthy remake of the Hong Kong thriller "Infernal Affairs." The master was in top form, the performances were riveting, and so many key scenes from the original were an absolute film-phile's wetdream to see remade. GO SEE THIS FILM! Quote
Guppy Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 wow.. for maybe the first time ever I am enthusiastic about a remake of a film I really loved. I'm really harsh when this happens cos it's got a lot to live up to. I'm of the opinion that it has to be better than the original to have made it sucessfully worth the bother of remaking. Quote
KingNor Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 I'm glad to hear this is getting good reviews, it's looking to be the film i've been waiting for all year (something not crappy ) Quote
bsu legato Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 GO SEE THIS FILM! I hear, and obey! (hopefully some time over the long weekend) Quote
KingNor Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 long weekend? did i miss a holiday someplace? Quote
bsu legato Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 long weekend? did i miss a holiday someplace? Yes. A place called "Canada" and a holiday called "thanksgiving." We invented it, you know? Quote
bsu legato Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 And before anybody has a cow, I'm kidding about that last part. Quote
Mr March Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 And before anybody has a cow, I'm kidding about that last part. Flashbacks of the CGI debate Quote
kanedaestes Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 Saw the film last night. Wow, truly magnificient. It was great from beginning to end, and the perfomances were truly amazing. It is without a doubt one of the best films this year, hell one of the best the decade Quote
