neptunesurvey Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 After seeing the posts of people wanting to see a build up I've decide to start the Oberth. The kit is well done with nice lines a few small bubbles. Here are a few pics of what you get. Quote
neptunesurvey Posted June 18, 2006 Author Posted June 18, 2006 The little bit of flash present was easy to clean up. One problem I came across was removing the excess from the antennas that attach to the engines. Be very very careful when doing this because it is quite fragile. I broke 2 of the 4 antennas. Now I need to clean the parts. Quote
neptunesurvey Posted June 22, 2006 Author Posted June 22, 2006 I'm almost ready to start painting. I can't decide on light gray or white for the underside. Any ideas? Quote
HWR MKII Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Id go with a really light grey, it wont look as stark against the blue upper part. Quote
Guest Bromgrev Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 (edited) And here I had almost given up on seeing one of these come to life (apart from Honneamise's own). Me and my big mouth. Looking forward to this ... Edited June 30, 2006 by Bromgrev Quote

I'm hoping to spray on the Darkblue coat today. Its fairly humid today and the gray coat from yesterday still has not completely dried yet. Quote
neptunesurvey Posted July 9, 2006 Author Posted July 9, 2006 Finally got to spray the Dark Blue yesterday. Hopefully it will dry in the next couple of days. Damn, this humidity. Quote
honneamise Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 This is a cool thread! I´m looking forward to see some more pics! BTW a light grey is better than plain white IMO, too much prime colours and contrast might make the model look a bit toyish. I used a very light grey on mine, IIRC it was the Vietnam era underside grey as seen on Phantoms, F-100s etc. Quote
HWR MKII Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 The best light grey for that is testors model master or acryl light grey. Quote
MechTech Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 OK, there's lot's o' talk and just two pictures at the beginning of the thread (very subtle hint). - MT Quote
neptunesurvey Posted July 11, 2006 Author Posted July 11, 2006 Here are a couple of pictures. The blue is still fairly tacky with all of this humidity. I mostly use Model Master Enamel paints. They seem to have the best paint selection for what I'm looking for. On the Oberth I used Dunkelblau and Lichtgrau. The MME German paints offered seem to have the color I'm usually looking for when painting anime kits. Quote
honneamise Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Good colour choice, that German blue looks lighter than the usual Navy blue but I like it very much. Hope it will be dry soon... too much humidity sucks, same over here, my super glue thickens and dries before I can even use it! Quote
HWR MKII Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Keep your super glue in the fridge to prolong its shelf life in those humid german summers. The colors do look good Neptune. The light grey is perfect. Quote
neptunesurvey Posted July 12, 2006 Author Posted July 12, 2006 Thanks guys. Its almost dry. I should be able to finish the rest of the painting tomorrow. Then add some decals. Now I just need to find where I placed my spare 1/72 Hasegawa decal sheets. Quote
HWR MKII Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Place it near a warm lamp and turn it every 20 min or so to assist in drying the paint. It will hepl the solvents evaporate and speed up some of the outgas. Quote

neptunesurvey Posted July 15, 2006 Author Posted July 15, 2006 Here is the Oberth 97% complete. Just need to add the 4 antennas and some decals but that will have to wait until November when I return from sea. One hint is masking tape will be your friend during the painting of this kit. Enjoy and build some more. Quote
MechTech Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 Looks great, ready for battle. Have a safe journey! - MT Quote
jardann Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 Great build! It's really fun to see this kit built up. Hope you have a safe time out at sea. Quote
neptunesurvey Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 I'm back from sea and have finished the Oberth. I'll post some pics later today. Quote
neptunesurvey Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 (edited) Here is the finished product. I added a little weathering to show its been in action a little while. Enjoy. Edited November 12, 2006 by neptunesurvey Quote
Guest Bromgrev Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 It's good to see one of these in action! Those shades of blue and pale grey work really well - more 'real world' than the anime navy and white. Quote
baronv Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Very nice work, almost forgot that ship. Kinda looks like the the president's ship on, Colonial One on the Battlestar Galactica show. Quote
honneamise Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 I love that colour scheme, not too much toned down yet not toylike at all. To be honest, I love the whole ship (OK I´m biased of course )- that design is far too cool to be wasted as a "3 seconds in the background then blow-up-CF-ship"! Quote
MechTech Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Looks great! So is it tough to build models on board ship? Especially with heavy swells/waves? Quote
Guest Bromgrev Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Not to mention when the lights go out! Quote
neptunesurvey Posted November 15, 2006 Author Posted November 15, 2006 Looks great! So is it tough to build models on board ship? Especially with heavy swells/waves? The hard part is keeping everything secured while you work and making sure you don't stab yourself with the #11 blade. I have a few scars to show for it. I usually don't paint at sea unless I have a cockpit to paint. If the seas are too rough I just climb into me bunk and enjoy the ride. When the ship loses power, which I told Bromgrev, Graham, and Valk009 about one story, it can get interesting. Honneamise, your not being bias, its a great kit and I like the paint scheme as well. Those Testor Model Master Enamel German paints are great! Has anyone else been working on the Oberth kit? Quote
MechTech Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 I have a friend in the Navy who always keeps a knife on him just in case the lights go out! He says you gotta be wary of the "ether bunny." - MT Quote
neptunesurvey Posted November 16, 2006 Author Posted November 16, 2006 I always keep a flash light and a large knife on me at all times when on the ship. I have not heard of the "ether bunny" but then I'm not on the gray ships. I spend more time on survey vessels. Quote
