Chronocidal Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 As of Disappearance Kyon's the slider. And he adds some more time-traveller credentials, to boot. True enough, although I dunno if it counts since the whole thing was rooted in a warped timeline, and not two parallel possibilities that existed simultaneously. I would love for Kyon to actually be the one who finally turns out to be one though. Now, the content of Vol 9 though... that is a truly confusing mess, and so far, it's the only volume that's ended on that sharp of a cliffhanger. The rest of the volumes ended in some sort of resolution, but 9 just... I dunno. When I read it, I thought to myself, "Either the author died while typing this, or they ran out of ideas." I know it's going to be supposedly continued in Vol. 10, but I get the impression that the author wrote themself into a corner with that story. If anyone has not read Vol 9, you should, but be prepared to be let down. It doesn't end, and it opens a lot of possibilities for what's actually going on. The way it's written, it's DEFINITELY meant to introduce a slider in some way. You've got alternating sets of chapters, labeled "Alpha" and "Beta," and each one tells a slightly different story about the same events. One of the big events in this story is the start of the new school year, and Haruhi deciding to have an SOS recruiting process (but it only really happens in one of the two storylines). In the storyline where it happens, there's one particular student who seems very interested (dunno if they were really abnormal, but they stood out.. I'll have to read it again). Assuming Kyon isn't the slider here, I get the feeling she's going to join SOS, and then somehow wind up in the alternate world where the recruiting never happened, and no one knows her.. While I don't think they'd introduce a character like that that could basically take kyon's place as the main focal character, she's the only character that you only see in one of the alternate realities. If Kyon were really the one that's a slider, he'd either meet himself, or wind up switching places, and you'd still wind up telling two stories all the way through, and the two might never resolve into one again. Oy, as much as I've been avoiding it, I really need to just read through the whole series again. The little things I can't remember for sure are driving me nuts Quote
JB0 Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 The way I read book 9 was more that there's a clash going on between the two sides' "big guns"(anti-Yuki and Yuki or anti-Yuki and Haruhi being the most likely pairings, unless Saseko has more power than we've been led to believe.), and we're seeing reality shift back and forth between the "proper" version of events and an alternate version that furthers the anti-SOS agenda. Like in Disappearance, only rapid-fire back-and-forth. Setting up to bring a slider in would certainly be another way to read it, though. I actually hadn't thought of it that way until now. Quote
Keith Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 Maybe I'll have to see all this stuff animated before I understand it, but all of that mentioned from the later novels seesm a ibt out of step with what's been animated so far. Quote
VFTF1 Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 I got lost somewhere around where the black lines started... Pete Quote
Bri Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 I'm really glad they use spoiler tags when discussing the content of the novels. I have not read the novels and I don't want to know more just yet. Thanks Quote
Chronocidal Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 (edited) Lol.. well, as confusing as the novels sometimes are, please read them quickly... we need more people in the know the discuss the details with, and maybe come up with some kind of explanation for all the shenanigans. Btw.. I re-read the section where Kyon talks about meeting Sasaki, and the whole idea about Kyon taking her powers and giving them to Haruhi could be completely wrong.. unless they're hiding the details further in the past, Kyon didn't know her until right before his last year of middle school. They may have met before, but they didn't get to know each other until he got sent to cram school, which Kyon states was two years before the time he said it, which was the start of his second year in high school. Since they've almost reached the point where "3 years ago" will become "4 years ago," it doesn't look like Kyon knew her at all that far back. Edited June 8, 2009 by Chronocidal Quote
VFTF1 Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 If you point me in the right direction - aka - where can I get the novels online? - then that would help me read them quickly Meanwhile - I've managed to DL episode 14. Will watch it tonight - yay Now...where can I find season 2...hmmm... other than youtube? Pete Quote

And there's only one episode of season 2. Though apparently the reruns are an extended cut. Either way... http://www.nol888.com/plog/category/fansubbing/releases/ Because Our Lady Suzumiya must be worshipped in HD. (Hey, I bought the deluxe editions of all the DVDs, and the US hardback novel. I'm supporting the Brigade.) Quote
Keith Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 And seriously, I'm up for a bluray of Season 1 + 2 in just as decadent a special edition as the R1 DVD, bring it Bandai! Quote
shiroikaze Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 What? The reruns that are being run right now are extended? Oh man! I've been missing new bits and pieces! Quote
VFTF1 Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Thanks JBO. I am also supporting the Brigade and am awaiting arrival of my first shipment of Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya figures - went with Revoltech in the end ... Anyways - just watched episode 14. I liked it. I should have expected that kind of ending - and there was a point in the series where I thought I recognized Haruhi's specific "condition" for what it really was - lack of sex with someone she loved A kiss in dark space or whatever it was isn't exactly what she needs to shake her out of her condition - but it's a good start And now I kind of understand why Asahina is so careful not to get close to Kyon - she's probably afraid that Haruhi will destroy the universe in a fit f jealous cosmic rage My favorite part: Yuki writing to him that "I as an Individual also desire your return" Yuki has fast become my favorite of the girls. She IS the cutest of the three and I like quite good looking girls All in all - a fanstastic show. I am happy that stuff like this is still being made and that it's not always necessary to travel back to the 70s for good anime Pete Quote
JB0 Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 If you like Yuki now, wait until Alt-Yuki shows up... Also: watching the reruns, I remembered what first prompted the "Kyon is the one with powers" thought. It was in Mysterique Sign. The Brigade logo that caused all the trouble WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL VERSION. It was the resampled web-size version. Resizing an image file creates a TOTALLY DIFFERENT IMAGE FILE. Especially if Haruhi was working in a different file format than Kyon(Probably BMP or PSD on Haruhi's side. The anime shows her using Photoshop, and while it's not specified in print, Paint is by far the most likely candidate. And Kyon is certainly using GIF or JPEG.) But even ignoring file differences, the actual IMAGE is changed by resizing, and changed MORE if Kyon used JPEG instead of GIF(GIF is quite likely lossless for Haruhi's masterpiece.) So HARUHI isn't the one that accidentally created the most compressed data file in the world. KYON is the one that created a tiny-ass GIF that represented hundreds of petabytes of data. Of course, Yuki should have caught this if it was relevant. But she may have just felt that correcting Koizumi wasn't important enough to say more words, given she was over-budget for the week already. Quote

JB0 Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 (edited) How many more weeks until the next new ep, this is freakin' murder! Depends on what they do next. Almost* certainly a minimum of 2. They aired Lone Island Syndrome friday. Lone Island Syndrome part 2 is next. After that... we don't know. It could be Endless Eight. If they don't do Endless Eight, it could be Sighs 1. If they don't do Endless Eight OR Sighs, it's either an anime original story or... Adventures of Mikuru Asahina, since they started with Melancholy 1 for this run instead of the movie. And if Adventures of Mikuru Asahina is next, they ALSO run Live A Live, Day of Sagitarrius, and Someday in the Rain before they start Disappearance, and we have a month and a half to wait. *Unless they toss Haruhi Theater in, in which case all bets are off. There's no established time for the Haruhi Theater stories, other than Return of Haruhi Theater is after Haruhi Theater, though it's implied they happen before Snow Mountain Syndrome... which is after all currently-seen episodes, so it's not a useful benchmark for our purposes. They could toss Haruhi Theater in between Lone Island Syndromes, just to inject a little chaos into this chronological-order no-episode-previews broadcast! MUWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!! ... I actually hope they DO throw one in-between Lone Island Syndromes now. Kyon: Wait, we aren't showing the conclusion? Edited because Lone Island 1 has already aired, and I was counting it. VFTF1 Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 As is my usual fare, I'm gonna wait until the whole second season is done before seeing it. Watching Macross: Frontier one episode at a time was terrible enough for the days of anticipation. I prefer seeing series in full. That said - I'm quite content to watch season 1 over and over again. I showed episode 00 "Adventures of Mikurua Asahina" to my step-daughter yesterday - my girlfriend looked over our shoulders for about five minutes to make certain I wasn't showing her daughter a porn flick or something (geez...) but was satisfied that it was harmless Judging by my 12 year old's reaction - Melancholy is definitely for the grown ups. There's not enough "happening" and at the same stuff there is too much "subtle" stuff happening to make it "enteratining" to someone who isn't an anime fan already or has a love of such stories anyways. Not that she DIS-liked it; but I could tell it was a tad too demanding for her - besides, a big downer was the lack of horses, cats, dogs, and assorted animals (she's into animals)... Oh well... Guess cartoons are for grown ups these days Pete Quote

JB0 Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 (edited) So... I've watched the raw, and felt something was wrong. And watched some shitsubs with strange punctuation scattered in randomly(seriously, I can't for the life of me figure out how they typo'ed that badly) and... Haruhi's will is not done( nor is Kyon's homework ), so next week, we see the first all-new rerun in television history! Edited June 20, 2009 by JB0 Quote
Bri Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 Quality of the RAWs depends on which broadcast is used as source material. The early ones are from UHF channels. Afaik the fansubbers who are serious about quality wait till the Tokyo broacasts come avaiable. Sofar Yuki has the highest visual quality subs of Haruhi I have seen. This group has subbed all the reruns aswell and is reasonably fast. About a week after broadcast. Quote
Rbstr Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 so next week, we see the first all-new rerun in television history! Not just next week. The entire rest of the season will be Endless Eight over and over. The raging that would be done. Quote
JB0 Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 Not just next week. The entire rest of the season will be Endless Eight over and over. The raging that would be done. That would be supremely, hilariously, awesome. ... Until I realized it meant I wasn't getting my Disappearance. Quote

Bri Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 (edited) Next episode should be broadcast in about 5 hours. Few hours more till the first raws. Epic orchestral version of the Mikuru opening: Edited June 25, 2009 by Bri Quote
Chronocidal Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 (edited) OMG. That song just made my day in more ways than I can even list. A more purely epic win has rarely shown its face on the internet. Btw, this is one track of an entire album, all done with the Tokyo Philharmonic. *runs to find the entire album* Most are with vocals, unlike the Mikuru theme, and some of the orchestral versions don't mesh well with the vocal, but I think I like the Bouken Desho Desho arrangement even better than the original. Edit: Hare Hare Yukai appears to be instrumental too, and is incredibly awesome. Edited June 26, 2009 by Chronocidal Quote
Bri Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 yea, that album is a must have. I ordered it already from CDjapan after hearing a few more songs. Aya Hirano is no classical singer, but she has a very pleasant, distinctive voice so I don't mind the vocals at all. Quote
shiroikaze Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Holy poo. Good things do come in strange packages. Quote
JB0 Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Endless Eight is a THREE-parter now? They must really love this story. I can't say I blame them, though. And it's coming off remarkably well. I think the new samples actually add a lot to the story. Quote
