See, what ya gotta understand is, through some mysterious attribute of Protoculture the Zents were able to be huge. Once humans got this technology it was only a matter of time before they started applying it to specific body parts. All the dudes have macronized wangs and all the chicks have macronized boobs, that's the miracle of Protoculture!

Holy crap those are huge!!!!!

IPB Image

Didn't Punky Brewster have to get her's reduced in size? Sure jugs that huge are good at strip club but won't they get in the way of flighting a plane?

The boobs on Jack Baker (is that him?) are big too. Wait are they even wearing clothes? I mean they aren't fitten like clothes or even tights. They are like paint on. These pictures are just laughable.

I say there's nothing wrong with a lil' macronization! B))

That's Marcus Rush. The new hotshot pilot & brother to Scott Benard's dead girl friend Marlene.

No, that is our new protagonist, Lt. Marcus Rush. He is the younger brother of Marlene Rush, Scott's dead fiancee.

Sadly...

Yes they are. This is Tommy Yune at his 'best'.

Ask and ye shall recieve....Im basically ambivalent about her design. Im just surprised the 42DD chest she has wasn't even bigger. <_<

Hey, those are the size of my ex's before she had a reduction. Lost 1 lb in each. She had all sorts of back and balance problems. After reduction she was still a DD. :o

Yeah, YEAH! Ariel's where it's at.

Oh, about Punky Brewster, she did in fact receive a breast reduction. Word has it that she was so large that she had debilitating, chronic back pains as a result of her God given gifts...

okay just finnished watching it... and at the risk of being called a lemming, I actually REALLY enjoyed Shadow Chron.

Things I was disapointed about, I thought Dana would be Skull Leader from what I had understood from Prelude to Shadow Chron, I guess I misunderstood, but I think it was dilibertly misleading. Where is Dana btw? On the SDF-3?

And the one thing that really disapointed me was no, one not even Dana's sister used the word Zentradie, "I'm half alien"... couldn't she say half Zentradie? or are we so desperate to break our ties to Macross that only the last two sagas will be mentioned?

What about Janice? Prelude to Shadow Chronicles seemed to support the idea that she was Minmei's singing partner from the Sentinels movie, and the fact that all the songs she sings in the movie are old Minmei songs would seem to lend some credit to to that... but she says she was created in part by the Haydonites who would not have been encountered up to that point... in Shadow Chronicles she switched to a new body which might be the body the Haydonite designed one, and her original body was simply Dr. Langs. So does the Janice entity pre-date the Haydonite treaty?

And I guess I didn't fuss too much over the plot holes cause I never saw new generation, I think... as a pilot of a TV series it deffinitly served it's purpose now we have to see if a TV series will ever appear.

I agree to an extent but doesn't Marcus say "We should kill all aliens" or something to that effect. I think it was written as it was to play on Marcus' ignorance... although I thought "I'm half Zentraedi" would have sounded better also.

As for the station being destroyed, my gripe with it was I think I missed the plot point where they explained why they needed to blow it up, as opposed to, like, launching the missiles or something. And again with how much they stressed how important the flaw in the missiles was, it wasn't brought up once after the first missiles were dealt with. And I don't recall if they mentioned where Liberty station was located, but I think it was still located in the Solar system. If so, and the missiles do go and create black holes, then detonating them there is still dangerous anyway.

Okay the flaw was the black holes, which Vince saw with his own eyes already he knew what was comming. The Missiles are huge and slow moving the Haydonites would have seen it comming and not get caught by suprise. The screen caption said "deep space station Liberty" deep space applies way out there, away from any major planetery bodies, but then DS9 was Deep Space too and nex to a big old important planet, but that's neither here nor there since it's another series. So I think that handles all of those arguements.

The definition of Japanese animation is clear and not effected by the definition of "anime" in any language. If the Japanese are not in control of the production of the animation, it's not Japanese animation.

The screenshots a page or two back are in a squished aspect ratio. Their heads are obviously enlongated.

This video is just like the Robotech II: The Sentinels video. I don't know what else to say. That pretty much sums it up.

You have to blame the ongoing legal battle between HG & Big West. Anything Macross related was a big no-no. Ford Riley mentioned this but he did say this might've changed.

Well, I never even paid attention to what the Shadow Chronicles were till a friend told me about it, I been outta touch with this section of the forums I guess . So I did a torrent download of the show and actually was surprised. I liked it , well the continuation of the story anyhow. I had no idea what the SC was about, just saw topics of it. I didnt like the CG created ships, but the story line was right up my alley, i look forward to more episodes, if there are more, I will have to read some more related threads in this topic i guess. It is kinda along the lines of the books, but not exactly, from what I gather so far.

Demanding, ain't we. ;) I didn't care for either design of Ariel or Janice, as both looked like trailer trash. I expected to see a cigarette dangling between Janice's lips or Ariel to have Invid tattoos on her boobs.

And here is the XO of the UES Icarus (at least I'm assuming she's the XO). Guess the REF provides its female personnel with implants whenever they are requested.

Yes, we should not apply the french word for "cartoon" to this Korean created OVA. I agree, only strictly Japanese made, completely in Japan, OVAs should receive the honor of the French title....

SO um, what can we call "anime" then?

In this case maybe "Crapime"

I love animation in general weather its 40 plus year old Warner Bros or this years latest thing.

Man can you imagine action figures of the girls that much plastic would cost a fortune.

Haven't had the chance to watch the show yet, but yeah it looks (Robotech) Protoculture has a certain side effect on women's breasts! Not complaining though. ;) But seriously, if we're going to complain about the proportions of the women's breasts, we might as well complain about the over-sized anime style eyes; who has eyes that large in proportion to their heads? Since it is anime style, things are going to be over-exaggerated...

...and perhaps we now know what Tommy's fetish is for. ;)

I was told a number months back there was a several second clip that was cut from the show because the legal people at Harmony Gold were concerned that there was something shown that was basically too "Macrossy" in appearance or what it was referencing. Because Studio Nue and Big West own the rights to the Macross characters, mecha, and designs, HG has to be careful in what they show in this new series (you won't see any VF-1's or Zentradi Battlepods, the Macross saga characters will look radically different). They are also probably careful in what words they are using (ie. Zentradi/Zentraedi, SDF-1, Macross). I assume Protoculture comes up in The Shadow Chronicles and I guess that is probably okay because "Protoculture" was not one of the things that was part of Big West/Studio Nue's win in court in Japan in 2002.

Protoculture is hardly a term that originated with Macross. Regardless though, the way it is used in Robotech doesn't make any damned sense.

I, for one, would be totally fine with the Zentraedi being renamed the "Zents" in Robotech. I dont' think that would stir and legal commotion and it sounds like it just might be a natural English-ifying of an originally alien term.

Well true, however Harmony Gold does own the animation so they could use stock footage of VF-1s and the SDF Macross in a new production if they wanted to for flashbacks... but then of course it would look out of place but hey it did in Sentinels too.. But they could call the SDF-1 Zor's fortress. there was another scene that bugged me where the new main pilot was like "it began with the event that brought Robotech to earth" which really didn't explain what that event was... I mean if he had said.

"It began when the flagship of the Robotech Master Zor, brought us the secrets of reaching to the stars, it also triggered a series of wars for the secrets of protoculture the fuel source for Robotechnology, with different alien races. First the Masters' servents, a race of giants, came then the Masters themselves, we managed to bravely come out on top in both of those conflicts but finally the Earth fell to the Invid..."

Would something like that have violated any BW/SN copywrites... anyway they used the Macross terms in Prelude and they were certainly aware of the court rulings by then. I don't think Big West has a special person reading/or watching everything that comes out of HG, be it a Macross era comic or whatever to make sure they don't tread on anyones toes too much.

But sure, even "Zents" would be good... or change the spelling/pronounciation slightly Zentraldi or something... I'm a Macross fan first and formost and I understand Big West's need to protect themselves as much as they can but I'd like to see some kind of more cival arragment between the two companies... but that's not likely.

Whatever the deal is that's been worked out, apparently HG can use Macross all they want in print and video games but absolutely, under no circumstances, can anything Macross appear animated. I have no idea how that works but it's pretty clear from the comments being made and the merchandise sold that HG CAN and will use Macross where possible but will run like h*ll away from it in anything that will be shown on TV or in a theater.

I agree 100% with your statements on the recap. There seemed to be a lot of fear from the writers about discussing the first arch of Robotech. I would imagine they were trying to be as non-specific as possible as to not get new viewers lost right from the get-go but I sure don't think that's how it plays out.

I've read a lot of reviews on the show now from a lot of different sources now. The animation is generally panned as being standard at best for five years ago, the character designs are generally panned for being cookie-cutter with odd proportions, and the story is generally panned as being catered to the existing fans and having no resolution. The third complaint usually brings out the ire of Robotech fans (again, who the story was catered to) who point out that the movie is meant to be the start of something, not the end. It's funny though, some very large criticisms are heaped on the film but the score almost always ends up being average rather than terrible.

I'd agree with all those complaints. It really does feel like it straight-on continues the story, as if it were simply the next episode in the show. That's the problem with the story: it's basically an extended tv episode and thus simply doesn't have enough plot to stand on it's own as a movie. I don't know if there's any way around having the plot extend from the last episode of the show though, since the events in the last episode are a bit too important to skip ahead.

And I will also agree with the statements that despite the problems with this, it wasn't nearly as bad as was expecting, or as bad as it could have been. It was certainly better than G Saviour. :D I think people around here are being a bit harsher on it due to the whole Macross/HG issue, especially in regards to the "American = not-anime" thing, but they do need to realize that if they want to be successful, they need to make their work actually good, not passable in some areas and terrible in others.

I actually watched this again before I returned it to netflix, and I wanted to say that a couple of the plot hole complaints mentioned earlier (like why they needed to blow up the station, etc) actually did have explanations though they could have been (and were) easily missed. With the aformentioned missiles, General Reinhardt had a single line mentioning that it would take too much Protoculture to launch them, and with the Invid taking it all it's not something they can waste. It's literally a single sentence in the middle of another conversation, which is why I missed it the first time. But it's still not good when it takes repeated viewings and carefully paying attention in order to figure out why the characters are doing some of the things they do. The cgi is still just as bad the second time around as the first. :p

I caught what Reinhardt said, which makes absolutely no sense at all, the engines may be powered by PC but it's not like an alpha where you have to swap out canisters plus the fact that the engines would most likely still use some sort of reaction mass too keep them burning in space. Unfortunately once again the people who made Robotech were showing their ignorance when comes to technology. That and the fact that you just don't blow up something as strategically important as a major shipyard, repair depot, restocking facility, just to wax a single enemy fleet.

Posted

I didn't say it made sense, just that they did give an explanation.

As for blowing up the station, after thinking about it further I think the point was that since the resto f the REF fleet was sent there for repairs after the Invid battle, there wasn't enough defense available for the Haydonite attack. This meant that it looked like they were going to lose the station anyway, so the plan to evacuate everyone on the functioning ships (the Arkangel) and detonate the missiles was done. I think the problem was they didn't show anyone at the station aside from the main characters, so it made it seem like they were blowing up an empty station for no reason, when in actuality there were supposed to be other ships and people there and there really was supposed to be more of a battle. They just didn't show this, so you're left to figure it out yourself.

Wow, I just saw Shadow Chronicles. A few comments:

I feel asleep the first time I watched it. It was really boring. It's like all action and no plot... In other words your typical Hollywood fare. Unlike Hollywood, the action sequences suck. No eye candy here.

Alex Romero should get his eyes checked... he keeps having this tic like thing going on with his eyes. Actually its his entire face later on. A poor attempt at facial gesticulation. and oddly the only character to have any facial gesticulation.

Vince Grant is really stupid. If I didn't know better, I'd almost say that its playing off a certain social stereotype, but that would be so last century. Claudia was always protrayed as being highly competent.

Vince: "Helmsman, follow Dr. Nichols calculations to the letter."

Nichols: "Actually there aren't any letters, they're all numbers."

After an explosive rocking of the ship.

Vince: "What was that?"

Nichols: "It appears we are under attack."

While interviewing Bernard.

Intercom: "Sir, we've lost communications with Space Station Liberty."

Reinhardt: "Dammit!"

Vince: "I guess the interrogation is over."

After being teleport by Ariel to the bridge.

Vince: "Does she do that a lot?"

The dialogue is horrendous. The voice acting is overly melodramatic. They are trying too hard.

The animation is laughable. Most of the time, the character is completely motionless except for their mouths moving to simulate speech.

I was looking forward to the musical score, but while certainly not bad, I don't think its all that memorable either. No better or worse than any musical score from you typical action blockbuster movie.

The vehicles look like papercraft. Seriously. They should have just ask Kin to finish his and then they can use it as miniature models and save on all the CG. Also the movement of the vehicles are too... perfect. There's no sense of realism in them. The only reason the last battle sequence is even exciting is that even though the vehicles do very little, the camera pans all over the place to yield a sense of action.

Over all a "Meh" experience. I've certainly seen worst movies. But not many. The only reason to watch this is to see some beloved vehicle designs in action again.

vinnie

PS: Holy crap! You guys weren't kidding when you said EVERY single female character had huge tits. It was disturbing after a while... Too much of a good thing! Ariel had hers hanging out of barely large enough... uh cups... for the latter half.

I think it was pretty clear that there situation was hopeless. The Haydonites were handing them their tuckus. They didn't blow up the shipyard just to wax people, they did it to survive and escape in a POS colony ship. Also, most of the technology present in that complex had been modified in some way due to Haydonite help (note how the entire defending force all gets mowed down because the Haydonites know those ships are using their technology) so it's not like anything in that major base was going to be useful at all without a lot of time & effort (and Maia and crew took the few things that were useful). So, blow up a now obsolete space station to survive or... die. I don't think that seems too crazy to me.

The NS Missile thing still doesn't seem that crazy to me. Regardless of what Reinhardt said, we know that they're Haydonite technology and that they move real slow. So, launching them at the Haydonites doesn't seem very intelligent. Hiding it within the structure the Haydonites are approaching? That seems like a clever (if not cliche) rouse. Besides, they create a black hole, if you launch them you're still probably going to lose that space station.
