Mr March Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Reviews so far have been surprisingly positive. Looks like they might have something here that may leave the mutants and terminators in the dust this summer. Still, I've lived through too many hype machines to let this affect me too much. I'm remaining cautiously skeptical until I see the film myself, especially as a critic of most Trek aside from TOS. If I'm surprised by the higher than expected quality, all the better Quote
big F Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Yup the best film critic is yourself at the end of the day. Spend your money watch the film make your own mind up is what I say. Quote
UN Spacy Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Can the mods change the thread title? It's not 2008 and this movie will definitely NOT be a snorefest. Quote
Mr March Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 I think the thread title should stay. Think of it as a Susan Boyle lesson Quote
Vostok 7 Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 I forgot to mention what the Hot Wheels ships line up is/will be. Wave 1 is: NCC-1701-D Enterprise D NCC-1701-A Enterprise A (though it's actually the Refit, despite what the box and website says) NCC-1864 Reliant Klingon Bird-of-Prey Late release?: NCC-1701 Enterprise (Reboot version) Narada (the main enemy ship in the new movie) Wave 2 (yet to be confirmed): Battle Damaged versions of Wave 1 NCC-1867 Saratoga (a Miranda-class ship seen in The Voyage Home... Mold milking ahoy!) HMS Bounty (Yes, the Bird-of-Prey from The Voyage Home. This is Yamato-level repaint mold milking! ) Vostok 7 Quote
Greyryder Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 (edited) I saw these, but the only one I'd be interested in would be a TOS Enterprise. Edited April 30, 2009 by Greyryder Quote
Vostok 7 Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Picked up the big Light 'n' Sound Reboot Enterprise tonight at Wal Mart. I don't have any good AAAs though so I haven't tested the Light 'n' Sound part, but the toy is pretty detailed for what it is (certainly moreso than the older ones from other series). Lots of nice tampo printing, good detail, pretty good. I have to say, the Reboot Enterprise is a pretty interesting design. Not totally my thing (I prefer the early Movie ships, such as the Refit/A Enterprise, the Miranda-class ships, the Excelsior-class ships, etc. etc.), but it's nice. Definitely a lot of influence from the old TOS Enterprise there, for sure. Vostok 7 Quote

sharky Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Yeah, these are nothing like the old Micro Machines which were of course gashapon-tastic. The material is a little stiffer/harder than used on the micro machines. Also, the micro machines had no die cast. I don't really feel these Hot Wheels ones were a ripoff at all, it just would have been nice if they used a different material (such as ABS) for the plastic parts, especially since these are marketed towards collectors. The Reliant is about 6 inches long and 3 1/4 inches wide. It's also pretty hefty since the whole main fuselage is diecast. The Refit Enterprise is about 6 3/4 inches long and just a hair over 3 inches wide. So they aren't small, especially not micro machine small. Vostok 7 I saw the Enterprise-D and the Enterprise-A at Target yesterday. They don't look that bad; although, I did see that the Enterprise-A engine nacelles were not really straight. The "D" looked pretty good. Probably becuase it doesn't have any really long slender sections to it as the "A". Is it me, or does the saucer for the Enterprise-A seem too large? I passed as I am really just interested in the Reliant and Bird of Prey. The overall size is decent if you are not going for the larger scale such as the Art Asylum ones. They are something where you could fit the whole set nicely in a display case or perhaps sitting on your desk or bookshelf. I still think they should be in the $9.99 range, but the paint scheme and overall presentation looks good. Sometimes I wonder why they even put diecast in it at all? If it's going to have so little of it, why bother? I suspect they put a little diecast in just to make the claim. Or perhaps since it's Hot Wheels they are compelled to have some diecast in it even if it's cost prohibitive. Quote
Grand Admiral Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 The fact that Reliant isn't the same scale as Enterprise A, combined with the mentions of crappy plastic.... eh, I'll pass. Quote

Taksraven Let's not forget here that the new movie is a reboot of TOS, where the Klingons played a somewhat minor role to the Romulans (accordingly, the Romulans are from what I understand, the main protagonists of the new movie). Let's not forget that in TOS the Klingons didn't even have a language yet or their classic appearance. None of that came until the first movie. So yeah, it is pretty nerdy (and somewhat misguided) to say it's stupid the new movie won't have any spoken Klingon. And then again, who really cares? Vostok 7 Quote
Gubaba Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 And then again, who really cares? Uxi Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 I really wish one of these micro-scale starship things could keep them all in the same scale. The disparities aren't nearly so large between say... Star Wars.... for example: Constitution and Sovereign class versus Imperial to Super Star Destroyer. Quote

Ghost Train Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I bet there is probably a trailer for some secret or unexpected film no one's heard about that will air before the flick. Here are some candidates: - Cloverfield2 - LOLHALOMOVIE - some random reboot - ... myster JJA project that finally unites the Alias, LOST, Felicity (yea I'm serious lol) universes - Desu Quote
Mr March Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Yeah but we have to preserve the fact that nerds are wrong! haha. In the case of Trek, I won't blame anyone for believing this new flick was going to be anything but utter crap. Especially the geeks. Trek has been so awfully poor and so blatantly exploited for so long, it was the poster child for bloated, homogenized and mediocre entertainment. Paramount's handling of the property didn't earn any benefit of the doubt from fans or casual audiences alike. As far as I am concerned, open season on the franchise was well deserved and then some. In fact, I'd be so bold as to say the harsh criticism leveled at Trek by non-fans undoubtedly helped shape the very decisions that lead to this reboot and just might make this new film worth while. What you describe is pretty symptomatic of not just Trek but of the entertainment industry in general. The entertainment MBA credo: 1. Does it Work? Yes, go to step 2 2. Emulate, imitate, and plagiarize. 3. Keep milking it until it's dry So now we have this fresh wave of reboots that is supposedly a good sign that Hollywood is being more creative etc etc, but I strongly disagree. Now rebooting is the thing to milk dry! Take the same story, same characters, change a few things around, and add that beautiful 21st century CG that you couldn't do 10 years ago, and voila... successful reboot. However, in the case of this film, I'd say that it's different enough that it's a bit more than a reboot as it's already been indicated that it's an alternate universe of Trek lore. Quote
Scream Man Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Holy crap, that was awesome i dug it from start to finish. Ill go see it again i think. cheesy in the right ways, action packed and fun. THATS a Sci Fi film to me! I know only a tiny bit about original trek, aso I have no idea if its canonical or not. I also dont care. Kick ASS! Quote
Ghost Train Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Damm, I can't see this until tomorrow . I'm avoiding reading reviews, as they're all pretty much positive, and as such will make me feel that it's overrated when I actually do watch it. Quote

The way I look at it, as good as this new film could be, it doesn't erase 20 years of crap entertainment. If I enjoy this new Star Trek film (and most indications are it may well be the ONLY enjoyable blockbuster this summer) Paramount will have finally earned some goodwill. They better use it well before they lose it again Quote
