The silliest moment in Gundam ZZ for me is the 5th episode. A certain badass from Z is reduced into a guy that run into Zeta (which battling a silly mech at that time) while waving a stick (thinking that he can take Zeta down with that) and then promptly fall into a manhole. What a downfall. You'll wish that guy to be killed at the end of Zeta instead. As silly as it is, I prefer that more than angst and emo-thingy that plagued Gundam nowadays.

I'm probably the first person who would actually defend ZZ (It gets better! Really!)but watching Bright "Get those damn kids off my bridge!" Noa reduced to comedy prat-fall straight man nearly reduced me to tears... ;)

I wouldn't defend the first 6/7 episodes of ZZ, especially if you start watching it straight after Zeta. It does get much better though.

Also this.

OK, watching ZZ strait after finishing Zeta is probably a bad idea, but I still love ZZ; even the Moon Moon episodes. :D

Just finished my first viewing of Zeta ep. 5-8. Enjoying it. Right there with Macross and Votoms.

Did Gundam not farm out some episodes like horrific Macross epside #3 etc? Seems like Zeta animation is very consistently good so far.

Thought dad battle scene was a bit clunky. Was on the edge of my seat but thought it might have been cooler if Kamille just blew him away in the heat of the moment and then lost it in the horror of doing so. Dad kinda floated away . . . and I'm not sure what became of him - he did have oxygen right? No communication? Maybe the Dias explosion just killed him? If so would have like to see him go up in flames with more finality.

All the bodies on Side 1 were erie, made me very sure my young sons are not ready for this series yet. Little too western of a feel to the town though. AND why the heck did they not all have their visors down??????!! I mean, its only poison gas residue and dead body dust (!) - maybe a quick visor down would be nice - Hello? You are coughing at the dust and shielding your eyes! Ha.

Anyway - love all the characters, so glad I got these dvds . . .

Ouch. Read the review - very well written. The Gundam OO movie sounds like it's worse than Gundam SEED Destiny - if that's even possible. Oh well... back to downloading Turn-A :-)

Haven't watch the movie itself, but yeah the reviews aren't good everwhere.

However, I'll watch the movie for the sake of the action and explosion only. I love beam spam! :D

I believe that Gundam fans thinking too much about the show itself...they're trying to find some philosophies or deeper meaning etc. But why can't we just unplug our brain and enjoy flashy beam spamfest and shiny mech action? Not to defend the movie but it wasn't made to win Academy Award; it was made to make us go "wow" on such thing as Zabanya random fire attack. And to sell model kits (obviously).

I don't mind with missing plot holes or unexplained things. We can be sure those things will be covered in stuff like side story. And in this era we can discuss those things in forum with some nice people that voluntarily translate those kind of stuff.

Sure, the movie is disappointing for some people, mainly due to it's not worth the hype. But for a franchise as big as gundam, you can't help but to get overhyped. Y'know at first I was disappointed too after reading spoilers. But reading more spoilers, watching more trailers, looking at more screenshots, discussing things with people who watched it, I think "I'm curious. Good or bad, I'll watch it". And unplug my brain.

Because us old school Gundam fans liked Gundam better when it was about complex characters with heroes and villains on both sides of conflicts created by complicated political situations, and not shitty mecha porn staring a handful of bishonen with extra super-powerful one-of-a-kind mobile suits. First Gundam, Zeta, and even ZZ after a fashion were great stories that happened to have mecha in them (Victory and Turn A were also quite good). Why should we settle for the bottom-barrel crap that SEED, SEED Destiny, and 00 were, just because the animation is slicker?

And not all gundam fans are "old school" mind you. I'm not accusing you for being elitist, but as fans for a franchise that keep on going strong after 30 years we should be ready to adapt to any changes in said franchise. Gundam isn't a franchise that solely depend on "nostalgia" power to sell. It keeps churning new ideas, adding things that is hot in current generation (like pretty boys) etc. Mind you, SEED, Destiny, and OO main target demographic are teens. If older fans like it, good. But if they don't, at least they have new fans that will surely buy things they sell.

Bandai indeed use nostalgia factor for business however; by targeting old-school fans. We have MS Igloo, Unicorn, OYW-themed video games, side-story manga, etc if you don't like things that cool kids today drooling over. So yeah, you can't make everyone happy, but at least everyone has their share (there's even a manga full of bishounen that takes place in Zeon academy, surely targeted for older female fans).

I'm not saying that we must force ourselves to settled with anything Bandai/Sunrise gives. If you feel that something isn't fit for you, then it's not for you. But someone else might fit in. I dislike excessive angst, crybaby characters, or pink-haired-pop-princess leading an army of righteous people concept. But there are people who like it. I can't understand why. I never understand fanboys. But it's reality.

Man, I don't feel like I got my point across; Anyway, I watch anime for fun. I enjoy deep and complex story, but mindless fun and fan service also fulfilled my search for fun. Cursing and hating certain entry of my favorite franchise is not fun.

I never understand why Neo Sweden modeled their Gundam after Japanese schoolgirl outfit.

Except if anyone from Sweden can confirm if they use sailor outfit as uniform.

I'd check, but I'm too worried about what will happen if I type "swedish schoolgirls" into Google Image search at work...

I can just see my girlfriend's face as I explain to her "but honey - I was looking for a reason as to why the Gundams in this series were modeled after Japanese schoolgirls...honestly..."

Anyways... Being on the cutting edge of anime as I am - I've gone and thrown up a review of the 1999 Turn-A-Gundam episode 8, Laura's Cow with screencaps:

When I initially watched the vast majority of this series, I put episode-by-episode reviews up here at MW... no body knows where those might be? Or...do I just need to search this thread? :0

Fantastic review i must say, and on quite possibly my favorite episode of Turn A Gundam.

& i'd love to read the other reviews, so i hope you can find them. We need a review for THE MOON HIPPIES.

Up to episode 15 in Zeta

Bogging down a bit.

Ornage and green 'go-bot' suit is awful. Hard not to laugh. Flying saucer mode?

Love the Gaplant design, but she can't kill Katz in the Mark II when he has no idea which way it up? On a flying sled? When her main guns have a clear shot?

We had better air-to-air weapons 30 years ago -- not to mention this is a brand new mobile armor, flown by a Newtype, against a kid whose never seen combat before.

Guess this happens in every anime, in one unrealistic way or the other. Story seems a little too mixed up right now.

Pressing on though . . .

Thanks for the kind words. I don't remember Moon Hippies - but it sounds like a worthy episode! :-) Hope to get to it soon!! :-)

Oh well, at least Nobel is blond. That is Sweden enough I think :)

About Turn A, thanks to your review I want to watch it again. Stopped at episode 7 due to some distraction that is Gundam X.

Very nice summary and thoughts. & just so you know, you haven't seen nothing yet in terms of depressing in this series. It sure does deliver.

Thanks. But now you got my expectations way up...and then I go and watch episode 2 and...well... to quote myself:

"I was totally expecting the Greenjacket to blow up, thereby killing the wounded pilot who barely managed to escape with his life – and was a bit surprised that it didn’t. It would have been so Tomino to have the Greenjacket pilot just barely escape, only to die in the Greenjacket’s explosion. But I guess Gary (the pilot) has some higher purpose in the upcoming episodes – although he might just as well be forgotten."

Review of Episode 2 of Victory Gundam is online! http://dyrl.pl/detale.html?id=984

It's not going to start right of the bat. You've gotta wait until the characters are developed a little. It's after that you start to wonder just what is Tomino doing to these poor characters.

What if the original Gundam series was adapted for American audiences back in the '80s?

The might Zenobian empire!

At last I viewed the first battle of the Zeta in episode 22

WHAT a LETDOWN

The space battles are getting worse and worse. They need more cannon fodder or something to be getting blown to bits to make it seem even a little life threatening out there.

What targeting system do all these Mobile Suits use? Cuz for 10 minutes everyone is shooting state-of-the-art beam weapons and no one is coming close to hitting a target.

Kamille and Jerid should be killing 2 or 3 of the opposing side before they run into each other . . . how does Jerid even know that its Kamille in the Zeta? The "I'll get you this time you little brat" stuff is past old . . .

(had to vent)
