Those feet do look like a cost cutting design, though they’d probably break often if it were a real world design due to that joint at the side of the thruster on only one side and being super thin and unsupported. Under stress of landing and combat use the feet and foot thrusters would end up costing more in only a short time.
I do kinda feel that the backpack is interesting in that it uses its length to articulate heavy thrusters in multiple directions. They appear as aDr Who scarf, but I can see a purpose there.

They're more like helicopter skids than feet... not meant to support any significant weight and definitely not meant for maneuvering on the ground.

Most space-use Mobile Suits in the UC have verniers in the feet, but the G-Quacks seems to have a full-on engine in the leg similar to one of Macross's Valkyries or the MS-09 Dom... which may be the reason for the unusual foot choice.  They needed a larger nozzle.

It may have needed a larger nozzle, but support on a single side would probably cause damage to that nozzle

Honestly just hope it's not only a cutscene compilation with some transition and yapping heads for the vn parts padded in...

And that they'll use the opportunity to finish the rest of the kits line up for at leasat the known units, if not continue with the plethora of undesigned ones hinted in lore.

FYI,

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- already premiered in theaters in Japan. Just to reiterate, the movie is just a compilation of the first 3 episodes of the show, which will premiere later this year. There are a ton of spoilers, scans of the movie book handout which you can read them on r/Gundam.

After seeing that the lineup of mobile suits in more detailed pictures, I think I hate them all. I thought I was gonna like that zakuish looking one, but it really only looked good crouching down. Hopefully the show is better than the ugly designs

Not exactly Gundam's "first" live-action film project... G-Saviour may have been a made-for-TV movie, but it was still a live-action Gundam film and it predates this by like twenty-five years.

i believe they meant a Hollywood film for the first time. Probably the news article title should have been clearer.

this is from famitsu:

Bandai Namco Filmworks has announced that the Mobile Suit Gundam series will be adapted into a Hollywood live-action film for the first time.  The tentative title for the Hollywood live -action film is "GUNDAM." It will be produced by Legendary Pictures, known for Pacific Rim and the Monsterverse series, and will be directed and written by Jim Mickle.

Definitely a good chance of that with a chance of just being passable at best, making us all feel that it was a success since we expected a total loss.

Considering the OG fandom, it's going to be critically viewed. Of course the Gundam owners have done so many iterations (many bad) all in the name of selling models and toys, that there shouldn't be too much griping about this new live action Hollywood venture, IMO.

Unless they miss the point entirely or try to "reinvent" it.  Most western attempts to adapt anime end up eye-bleedingly awful either because the studio working on it completely missed what made the original work interesting and enjoyable or because some "creative" decides to put their own spin on it in what amounts to a massive show of disrespect for the original.

Hopefully Bandai will steer them into doing an AU, so the project can be either exploited or disowned without issue and so fewer of the fanbase's sacred cows are in danger of ending up as hamburger.

Can't count on the main line animes to do themselves justice these days. Sure ain't gonna count on hollywood live action to lmao

It's a Legendary romp at that. I'm sure it will be fun for the kiddies and their "anime fan" parents that have only ever watched DBZ and Pokemon to turn their brains of to.

Imma predict Michael Bay mechs made of eye bleeding metal scraps that you can't discern the shape of when in mostion. Corniest melodramatic one liners nobody will ever forget. Physics defying high speed macho gangster fighting that end in brutish overpowering. One call of duty style mad dash to safety sequence. All inclusive cast with a special pick to be poster face for the CN market. One japanese sounding character name to reference the brand heritage. Dubstep fart noises as beam sound effects. Godzilla in the post credits.

I'll stop before this becomes a bingo sheet 😁

One thing about Gundam is that most of the stuff is somewhat inclusive and has been since the start. Sure, the main character has usually been Japanese, but even that’s not every time. From what I remember, they were going for a bit of a Star Trek style of diversity with the cast, where different types of people co mingled mostly.

Pretty much. The vast majority of Gundam titles take place in a setting where Earth has either united under a world government or is one step away from doing so with most of the nations having consolidated into huge international alliances. With humanity busily expanding into space, modern distinctions like that aren't as meaningful. Characters are generally drawn in the stateless style and most do not have a background that ties them to any one specific real world group or place.

When discrimination does happen for the sake of the story, it's almost always based on whether one lives in space or on Earth.

Yeah, but that kind of setting accurate random race gundam cast is not the same thing as hollywood's "all inclusive" representation checklist

Expand

If you’re referring to certain orientation, gundam has had that for quite a while as well. M’Quve was questionable and so was  Scirroco. Maybe not so definitive in the early years, but the later stuff like IBO had some space lesbians and Witch From Mercury had a female female marriage thing going on. They’ve pretty much been checking all the boxes for a while now. A lot of anime has been checking all the boxes longer than Hollywood has

It's really no different.  The art style in the vast majority of Gundam titles uses mukokuseki character design, so almost none of the character designs have distinctive features that are associated with a particular ethnicity.  The few characters with explicitly stated backgrounds are from all over: America, Canada, Japan, Germany, Britain, Argentina, Puerto Rico, etc.  It's intentional to show the Earth Federation is really the Earth Federation.  Same way Macross's main cast practically has no two people from the same place.

If it's romantic options you're worried about, well... Char and Amuro have always had one of the all-time great bromances/foemances.  Folks have been shipping that for decades with no signs of stopping.  More recent titles have been more overt about that too, like Tieria and Niel!Lockon in 00, Yanagi's crush on Shino in Iron-Blooded Orphans, the two leads in The Witch from Mercury, it's implied Angelo's carrying a torch for Full Frontal in UC, whatever Quatre and Trowa have going on in Wing, etc.

G-Quacks has proven they don't have to settle for one or the other... they can do both at the same time!

Looked at the scans for GQuuuuuux's theatrical debut booklet the other day, and oh lordy are these designs UGLY.  Studio Khara's Ikuto Yamashita served up some of the worst mechanical design works in the franchise's history.  🤮  I'm looking at his design for GQuuuuuuX's version of the Zaku II and thinking "Look how they massacred my boy!".  The fugly main Gundam is actually the best looking one of the lot.

Yeah, they’re rather ugly unfortunately. The one that I almost like is the version of the Gundam with that gm style head. The show better have a good story, because those designs aren’t winning me over.

I sort of doubt that it will be a remake of the original series. I don’t know though if it would be an alternative universe story or a  uc story or even a side story to the original show. It could be an RX-78 if it’s the latter. But I really hope it’s an alternate universe thing. Something to start fresh with

I'm not planning to... I can't get past how fugly the designs are, and what's been revealed about the scenario doesn't really thrill me either.  It's not without potential, but it feels too much like the center of a venn diagram of Gihren's Greed and G-Witch for me to care.

I'll give it a fair shake when it comes out on streaming but I'm not going to pay actual money to see it in a theater.

Have they announced anything regarding streaming in the U.S.? I was curious to see it, but gundam seems to be a little over her and some over there and other stuff somewhere else as far as streaming sites

Not that I can see.  The series is supposed to start its broadcast run on April 8th (about 40 days hence at time of writing), but nothing on ANN or their official website about who's going to be carrying the series in western markets.

I'd assume it's going to be Crunchyroll.  They've had a lock on the simulcast streaming rights to new Gundam shows for over a decade now.  The one exception being Requiem for Vengeance, which went to Netflix because Netflix bankrolled its production in exchange for the worldwide streaming rights.  They'll probably announce it when they start to roll out the Spring 2025 simulcast schedule.

that's awesome, I personally would love to experience Gundam in a theater.  honestly since the pandemic, I've been to the theater twice. No one around in my friend group wants to go.
