That's a tough one, since I grew up watching all the super robot shows on TV. I'd probably say a tie between Mazinger Z and Voltes V.

I'd say Gunbuster, but I'm not entirely sure if he should be counted because it's really more a deconstruction of the genre and not in the true spirit as a real super robot show. Same for Dangaiou.

I'll go with GauGaiGar in that case.

For me its always been Voltes V.

Heck, the thing is like a national hero of sorts to pinoys (Filipinos) like me. Voltes V to pinoys is like how The original Gundam was to the Japanese.

Who remmebers what they actually said during the transformation sequence? I thought it was pretty cool, with the moosik and all.

Voice (which i presume is Ramrod) : "Acknowledged April"

"Ramrod Battle Sequence, On" *ramrod's hull/coat opens*

*The control consoles drop to the center....they are all dressed in their battle suits*

*The consoles start revolving*

*something in between here*

.................."roll them out"

Then it ends with : "Power strike, ready to ride"

LOL, isn't that the truth. But ask a pinoy why that is, and he'll just say, "Because..." I mean, its not like Voltes V as a super robot is any better than Combattler or Mazinger or Kotetsu Jeeg.

I can't even explain why its so damn popular among Filipinos. Someone once said because it was a big symbol of fighting the power since Marcos didn't want foreign things like that to be shown on TV?

I don't think so, since I watched a whooole lot of super robot shows other than Voltes V at the time. There were so many I can't even remember all the names.

Never watched super robot shows growing up. I was always into the more "realistic" style mecha shows.

I'll just have to go with Gunbuster as I love it's design and one of the first anime series I shelled out cash for (still have my mint condition US Renditions tapes)

Does anyone remember Macron 1 (aka Goshogun)? They use to show it on LA channel 6 early in the mornings way back in the 80s. Spiral Zone came on right after it. It had the funniest theme song - "MA-MA-MA-MA-MACRON ONE!!!"

I grew up watching Mazinger(Z) & Voltron. But got back into the genre with GetterRobo & Xephon.

Raw action wise and nicely rendered up close I gotta go with the Shin GetterRobo. Giant robots need to have bloody scenes!
