Noriko Takaya
From the ANN: ADV Films had managed to get half of the funds needed to make the live action Evangelion movie. Fortune magazine published what appears to be a rather good article which you can read here: http://www.fortune.com/fortune/print/0,15935,1134596,00.html. The article interviews ADV CEO John Ledford, looks at the manner in which ADV chooses titles to license and how it promotes them, discusses the anime industry as a whole and the symbiotic relationship between fansubbers and the industry, and many other subjects. myk
Oh no. I'll bet my new 360 that Devon Aoki will end up playing Asuka... Evangelion is an animated work and it should stay that way, especially when you consider what usually happens to an anime franchise when it becomes revisited. Street Fighter, Angel of Darkness anyone? I'm sure that you guys can think of more examples. No thanks. Live action ruins everything... myk
Would they give her blue hair, or would this live-action incarnation be more of a "realistic" type of work? At the very least, I hope that they won't repeat what I called the "clone army" in the animated Evangelion series: every character, from Misato, Shinji, Asuka, Rei and Gendo, all had the same face. I'm just worried that any attempts at a live action version of 'Eva would just turn into some expensive, cos-playing mess... Macross73
how would they even do the End of Eva ? / that was confusing as could be . SPOILER ALERT!!! is Dr ikari going to lose his hand inside Rei / will Shinji lay on the beach with Asuka and then...............choke her!!!! myk
Neither of the endings in 'Eva will do for live action. At least, neither of those endings would be "stylized" enough for the people overseeing this project. Wasn't there some "New Evangelion" story, complete with new mecha and or characters and a new "threat" to mankind that was created a few years ago, by fans or something? I guarantee that 'Eva will be a mish mash of that horrific creation and hollywood influence. If you guys think that the DOA trailer was bad, a live action 'Eva can only be worse. myk
Keith would be able to explain it-there was some sort of conceived "new-evangelion" series, that supposively continued where the original series left off, although anyone who understands 'Eva knows that you CAN'T pick up where the original ended. I believe that this new 'Eva was fan-based, or something-definitely NOT canon. Edited November 29, 2005 by myk
jwinges
If they do make eva a live action movie they should just cast a bunch of unknowns that really look the part. Look what it did for harry potter. Although that rei above looks pretty good.

Nice figure 348179 Aiki Miura is too old at 30 and a ex-porn actress I hate Devon Aoki, Rei might be Japanese (blue hair essential) but Asuka is defintely a red-headed German. Lindsay Loha...hHAHAA just kidding! Scarlett Johansson maybe? Edited November 29, 2005 by ComicKaze
cobywan
I really wish they would let it go. My big concern is that they will have to make some big changes to appeal to a world audience. Will most of the Japanese characters become American? If they do go ahead with it they should hire unknown actors with a lot of talent. It would be best for the film that way. Macross73
Definately, Its better to have non-Superstar actors. I dont wanna see over priced hams jockying for screen time. Oh and it shouldn't be toned down for mass audiences. Whos directing this thing again?
Mr March
Omg what a lame uniform! That chick looks like she belongs in a bad Stallone flick. "I am da law" *cringes* The value of Evangelion is much debated as even an anime feature. My expectations for the live action adaptation couldn't be any lower. wolfx
I was thinking. Is it conceivable to make any video game / anime movie that would appeal to a wide audience and at the same time appease the fans? Fans can be scary unforgiving folk. I for one think LOTR triology was a great movie without reading the book, but fans of the books keep bagging it for not following the book 100% or something or other. EVA LA movie will DEFINATELY be different from the anime, but different names etc shouldn't matter. Most important is to keep the overall feel, and pass the original message across. I'm not sure if they could keep the "Angels" and all the other pseudo-Judeo-Christianity references either. Some hardcore churches might object for angels to be portrayed as evil beings or something. Btw, did Gainax gave their approval to ADV to do this movie? I assume it to be so since they already went into talks with WETA and even collected funds and all? Hikuro
I mean k'mon guys WETA......Lord of the Rings wasn't bad....(.....k I never saw it cause its to long)......but really it doesn't seem that bad from the production sketches does it? Anime fans themselves are divided over Evangelion in its animated form. Many anime fans don't understand it or care for it's particular message or story. Can you imagine if they unleashed this thing on a world wide scale? The story that many of it's own followers don't even understand would be reduced to another Earth vs Invading Alien disaster. What elements of 'Eva could possible appeal to a world audience? Teenage girls in tight body suits? Fine. Giant robots fighting giant aliens? Mmm, maybe. A Misato and a Kaji doing it under a subway overpass, probably. A teenage boy at the center of mankind's transformation into a singular goo? Definitely not; this is not the type of series that would be rivaling Laguna Beach anytime soon... Edited November 29, 2005 by myk
wolfx
I don't see why not. They'd probably change it to be alot less trippy but have the basic idea there. Guy/boy loser dude is the key to mankind's survival ala John Connor. Everybody wants him in that robot developed in secret by the UN or whatever because only he can control it. Aliens come, loser guy defends New York 3 with much hesitation (CGI action...check), finds love in Asuka (love scene...check), Asuka dies/mentally raped, loser guy turns berserk and prepares to end the world with the help of the Aliens. Great movie coming our way. The way I see it, this will flop badly or might open the gateway to more anime-> hollywood movies....bad and good alike. wolfx
Well after GAINAX, Gonzo jumps into the bandwagon. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=7902 According to Little Harlock, Shouji Murahama of Gonzo stated in an interview with NewWords Magazine that a Blue Submarine No. 6 live-action movie is to be produced for approximately 10 billion yen (US$84 Million). This is set to be GDH's first live-action profect with 30 more live-action projects under consideration. Masahiko Ohkura will direct the movie. MrDisco
i don't think Eva should be made into live action. the concepts are too esoteric, the main characters are underage, and the time frame is too short (what 24-26eps compressed down into a 1.5hr time frame). instead i say ADV should use the funds to get the Eva movie license from manga and give us a progressive scan, dead-sea scrolls boxset version of Evangelion
Anubis
I'll still reserve judgement until I see more concrete info. There's potential, but how well it's utilized remains to be seen. It seems like they're putting effort into it at least from the production sketches, but that doesn't necessarily mean much at this stage. The story will have to be condensed down though to work for a movie. So in the end we'll have more of an evangelion-based action movie. Less introspective stuff. Let's see who will steer the helm for this one. That could be an indicator of the direction it'll go. When I heard that the US wanted to make a live action AKIRA, I just turned off my computer and went to sleep, making it as a bad dream. 348532 There was paperwork being done so that a live action Akira could be made. My wife was working in the manga industry in the west at that time, and all the companies that held the rights to the manga outside of Japan were having to sign some contract stuff related to the movie. But that was years ago, and it looks like nothing happened with it. So there were plans, but it looks like they went the way of the Macross Live Action, into the center of the galaxy, where they dissappeared with Misa, Minmay, Hikaru, and the megaroad-1.
