Die, Alien Scum! Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 What do you expect, Dean? The show is older than you are. Most kids your age aren't going to get into a foreign cartoon series that's 20+ years old. Planes that turn into robots don't impress kids anymore. "Transformers" and their clones have pretty much desensitized your generation to how cool a concept that is. Quote

I'd rather watch an anime with transforming mecha than I would an anime w/o mecha in the sci-fi/fantasy genre...and I love sci-fi/fantasy anime/movies/you name it. I don't see how something as huge as a 20 story building that can blow sh*t up...cause mass chaos and destruction...I don't see how that cannot be 'cool.' Black Valkyrie Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Don`t feel bad about it Dean, it`s nice to know some one your age who loves Macross. I got friends who are in there late 20`s and early 30`s prefer the new anime like the ones you mentioned and hate sci-fi anime, most of the old anime`s and sometime I really go in hot debate with them cuz of it. Shmitty Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 (edited) Funny this sort of topic would come up. Since becoming a Senior in HS, My friend and I have become the Pres, and Vp, respectively of the anime club at our school. Most of the kids at my school suck, and just want to watch Hellsing, which we can't even show at the school meetings due to content. I was planing on bringing my copy of DYRL to one of the outside movie meetings, we'll see how it goes over. Hopefully I can get those kids to watch something older for a change. Skippy438 Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 I've only met one person in real life who's even heard of Macross, a waiter in a Japanese restaurant one time who spotted my VF-1S keychain and said he used to watch the show as a kid. Quote
Father Jack Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Nobody has any appreciation for the classics anymore. The fandom in this country (for the most part) only wants to watch recent titles, and usually shirks away from anyting made in the 80's (Or god forbid the seventies). Also (And forgive me if your anime club is not this way but this is just my experience.) my anime club back in college was filled with the most retarded people I have ever met. All the girls literally copied their personalities from Azumanga (and you can imagine how annoying that was), and the guys all thought they were bad ass ninjas, (One guy claimed to be a samurai ). Like I said this was a college club and I can't immagine a highschool club would be any better. So all the girls want to see is pretty boys or boys touching, and all the guys want is cool action and ninjas, but no plot never any kind of plot or character development. So whenever we tried to play a classic show it was always just make fun of it even if it has a great story, because the animation is old. This does not seem to be an isolated case since most of these people think Gundam Wing is the granddaddy of all anime, and anything before that is crap. so in short you're one of the good ones Dean. Screw the rest of your club just watch the classics on your own or with a couple of interested friends. Trying to introduce these shows to the club as a whole is like casting pearls before swine. Quote
UN_MARINE Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Yeah, they're IDIOTS! all they wanna see is the latest, flashiest, story-less show. and you, the only one who's got taste (or brains) is the oddball in the group... BAH! and man, I've had my share of idiots trying to be a character from one of those shows... azumanga included there was even this one guy that was so dillusional, he thought he WAS japanese & did that "L is R" thing when he spoke... JESUS !!!! what a retard Quote
JsARCLIGHT Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Well, when I was in college in the early '90s we did not have an "official" anime club per se as much as we had a group of people (myself included) who where just interested in anime in general. This was during the dawn of "fanime" in the states when anything anime was greedily consumed and thought of as the best thing ever. We gobbled up any fan tapes we could find at conventions and watched them until the tapes wore out. In those days we would watch the crappiest crap that ever crapped and love every minute of it... sometimes for the simple reason that it was not Bugs Bunny or Mickey Mouse. I think to a good degree you have to "forgive" a lot of new anime fans for loving "what they can get ahold of" rather than loving the hardcore, long past "deep cuts" classics sort of thing. Only with age comes true wisdom and only by experiencing the bad can they know what is good. I mean, I watched everything back in "the day" and it taught me what I liked and what I didn't like. I actually liked some things that today I laugh at people that like the same. Hypocritical yes but plus ten points for taste in today's world. If they are still watching Gundam Wing and Naruto five years from now then you can call them out. Quote

But yeah times have changed and watching ANYTHING new is more of a trendy & hip thing then actual interesting. Which is why there is crap like Nar.... sorry I can even say it. I totally understand though because I've found only 2 people in the local area who like the anime for the story's rather then the trendyness of it. Right now I'm bringing the one over to the darkside that is manga, but it's time consuming because he's the jock-type who needs more then just static images to enjoy the subject. Quote
Wesker99 Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 (edited) The anime club at my school had a paper on the wall showing off this bad mama jamma. I was thinking about going on the off chance they didn't randomly choose a picture like that without watching Macross.. But then I realized that I can't stand some of the people I know are in the club, and I also can't sit through some of the new anime stuff without laughing at it, or just turning it off.. So I didn't end up going. I liked the pic though Edited October 13, 2005 by Wesker99 Quote
Noriko Takaya Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 There's no school like the old school. If these so-called new anime fans want to know anything about true anime, then they need to watch some of the classic stuff. Most of the writing back then was a lot better, and there was more of a sense of adventure. Some of the new stuff that comes out these days just doesn't affect me the way some of the older shows did. Anyways, I'm glad you like Macross at your age. I only know of one other person who does and she is my best friend's 16 year-old daughter. She even has the AnimEigo DVD set, which goes to show you she has class. And if you want to try some other old school stuff, watch Gatchaman. Quote

danth Posted October 14, 2005 Posted October 14, 2005 Ooh, good thread (before MGBUTTSEXX ruined it)! I love hearing old fans like me dissin' the new crap. Most of the writing back then was a lot better, and there was more of a sense of adventure. Yes! One thing that bugs me about new anime is that nobody moves or shows any expression when talking. They'll do something retarded and melodramatic like close their eyes and look down, but they won't turn their heard or lean back or lean forward or smile real big or jump around or move any part of their body an inch. The characters are so wooden! Another thing: It is a MYTH that new anime is better animated than old anime. It's lazy thinking: Some techniques improve with time, therefore all techniques improve with time, therefore new animation is better than old animation. Bullshit! Compare any (non-Anime Friend) Macross episode with any new show. Macross blows it away. I've seen a Valkyrie from 50 different angles in one scene of Macross, and that sort of thing just does not happen today unless it's done with CGI. Quote

I've seen a Valkyrie from 50 different angles in one scene of Macross, and that sort of thing just does not happen today unless it's done with CGI. It's cheaping out to spend less money. I like GITSSAC, but one thing I noticed starting with Episode 1, is how static the characters are. Unless it's an action scene, very little movement. You see them all sit or stand still, and occasionally see mouth movement. Newer animation can be good, but a lot of the time it's just pretty-crap. Compare Original Bubblegum Crisis to Bubblegum Crisis 2040. The new one is crap. I remember watching an episode of Saiyuki my sister bought years ago before most people ever heard of it in the US. We sat down and began watching it, and I couldn't believe just how cheap and shitty the animation was. It looked like a retarded homotech comic artist stuck a paint brush up his butt and started wiggling his cheeks over a cell. Another horribly animated series is Hoshinengi/Soul Hunter. The animation goes from crap, to diarhea. I also hate western imitation of anime/manga style. If someone from the west can draw in a japanese style and they do it good, I'll like it. But in most cases, people just imitate it in crayon or with a school pencil, scan it, post it on the internet and grin like a moron expecting praise. I also hate the retarded stories that unimaginative people come up with. Psuedo- exaggeration: "Homo Ball S The main character is a mostly bald monkey (but he has black hair that's all spiky and stuff, and when he starts have epileptic seizures it turns blond) that likes to spank himself, called Richard Sucker. Richard Sucker is actually a space-monkey that comes from another planet where they're all super powerful and everyone is really named after underwear, but he doesn't know that, in fact his real name is Jock Strap. He also likes to lay his head down on men's crotches and be abused by cute girls. And he's like the most powerful thing in the universe, because he can come back from the dead. He needs to find a bunch of homo ball Ss and a donkey, then stick them in the donkey. Along the way he befriends his enemies who are like super powerful, but he beats them down with his monkey-shaft. So he like befriends this guy named Cumulous Nimbus, who has blond spiky hair and blue eyes, and wears tight leather stuff and drags around a giant sword that he can't handle and has to use as a shield. He also befriends this blond ninja boy that's named Bukkake, who likes to dress up like a girl, wears big sports jackets, and likes to attack people by sticking his fingers up their butt-holes. And the enemies they'd fight would be this alien that looks like some kind of living sex-toy, and he vibrates so much that like the air vibrates so much that it hurts people, it even vibrates the air in space! His name is Refrigaretor. Then there's the living crap monster called poo. And there's this guy with long white hair that's always touching Cumulous Nimbus in weird spots when no one's looking, and he has a super long shaft that he calls the hairy-kary, and he likes to shaft people with it. And they end up fighting in this giant bed planet, where everyone spends the whole series vibrating while trying to find the homo ball Ss to stick in their donkeys. And it's like the coolest thing ever, and it's better than all the manga shows and stuff out there. I'm 12 years old and I'm already such a genius, praise me and give me money and worship me because I'm like so cool. It'll be even cooler than Robotech! My characters are like so original and cool, and you all suck! -Super Sayan L33T Gukoo-codpiece" ... Sorry. I got carried away remembering all the stupid things I've seen people do, or say, that I had to mock. edit: Obviously I'm making references to Dragon Ball Z, Final Fantasy VII, and Naruto. The "bukkake" is the famous word we all know it for for porn, but it actually comes from an innocent word which is a way to prepare ramen, like Naruto is named after a certain type of fish-cake in Ramen.
