areaseven
Next month, Jason Statham reprises his role as former Special Forces operative Frank Martin in the sequel to the 2002 action flick The Transporter. But the question is this: is anyone gonna watch Transporter 2? And what do you guys think of his new ride - the Audi A8 W12 Quattro? Project Phoenix
I liked Jason Statham. What turned me off in the first movie was the casting of that Taiwanese what's-her-face softcore porn star as the damsel in distress. I think her name was Shu Qi. I never liked her and I despised it even more after watching her bad acting in Transporter 1. They should've cast Maggie Cheung. I apologize to all Shu Qi fans in MW. This is just my $0.02. But then again, there's always Dynamix if you want to see her at all...

Guppy
Yes, I agree. Mourn the death of a great director. Now I will go watch Subway, Leon, and Nikita and weep into my popcorn. Anyone seen Danny the Dog? He wrote/produced that I believe?

Looks like I'm going to be looking up some movies when I get home As for the first flick, it wasn't great, but it wasn't horrible either. A decent popcorn action flick. I'll see the second one, especially since I have a free ticket. -RF Edited August 30, 2005 by Rider Faiz
kalvasflam
There is nothing wrong with casting a soft core porn star in the primary female role. She was oh so cute with her lack of language skills in the first movie. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm guessing that this is not a type of movie that you'd go to for the scintillating dialouge. Think of it like episode III, except the action is different. It's not a movie you'd have to go see, but entertaining enough for the pointless violence. Kinda like Stealth, but without the planes. But if nothing else, it'll be better than that travesty Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
Knight26
The original Transporter was fun, as was stated it was good popcorn flick with some mindless violence, interesting stunts, and very cool cars and car chases. Plus there is one benefit to watching a fight with shirtless guys in oil, if your girlfriend gets really into it you have a great time right afterwards. yellowlightman
I remember the good old days when Luc Besson actually made good movies. 324445 There's a fairly big difference between directing a movie and producing it at this point. He's gone on record saying he prefers producing because it's less work, requires less input from him and he still gets a bunch of money. Can't really blame the guy. Wes
Like I said on one of the other movie threads, this is the only movie this summer other than Batman Begins I'm planing on seeing. My brother's birthday crap had better be done before the opening show! I liked the first one because it was a relatively no-nonse action movie - just beating the crap out of the guys with whatever was around. I get tired of all the fancy sometimes god-like abilities and moves done by Asian leads. But I think a part in a Fairly Oddparents rerun I saw yesterday sums up my feelings about the move: Wanda: Wow, this movie is ultra violent AND stupid! Cosmo: And I would have settled for one or the other!

Never mind, who am I kidding. The fat bastard couldn't jump if his life depended on it. But the movie is probably good enough to be entertaining for the hour and a half it sucks up. No chance of that happening. 324792 Of course the Transporter 2 is going to be better than Kill Bill. You don't have to try hard to accomplish that. The freakin' Care Bears movie was better than Kill Bill. I would agree with you, but Kill Bill is one of those movies where you either "get it" or you don't....Fortunately, I do! 324807 Oh yeah? Personally, I think anyone who says they "get it" is lying. Creating an ultra-violent movie in a style immitating Hong Kong films from the 70's, then dragging it out into TWO movies (the second being mostly drawn out and uncessary exposition) does NOT make for art. It makes for one violent and slightly offensive cheese flick, and one absolutely boring snoozer. But that's just my opinion.
Stamen0083
I don't think you're supposed to get Kill Bill so much as you're supposed to get Tarantino. Kill Bill's story is straight forward: Bride hunts down people who ruined her life and kill Bill. It's Tarantino's quirks that makes the story more interesting. Tarantino is very odd, but he has some decent movies, not to mention some real stinkers. Resivor Dogs being in the former category, and Jackie Brown in the latter. But Kill Bill to me was kind of mediocre. Granted, it has its funny moments, but it's not just a straight out entertainment centered movie. Transporter 2 on the other hand is straight forward, nothing to get.

But that's just my opinion. 324821 There's not much to get. Tarantino wanted to do a homage film largely inspired by Japanese yakuza films from the 70's (the Hong Kong influence came in the form of Pai Mei). Maybe what threw people off was teh fact that he incorporated a lot of elements into the movie; Japanese gangster movies, Hong Kong kung-fu movies, westerns and his own films. He was obviously trying to emulate the styles of movies he saw and that affected him as a filmmaker and put his own spin on them. The fact is, it's not a movie that can be easily summed up into one genre or the other, and I guess that confuses/annoys/angers some people. I'm not a huge fan of Part II, but even Tarantino's worst is better than 99.9% of the rest of Hollywood (such as mindless garbage like The Transporter). Kill Bill Part I also happens to be the best thing to happen to action films in a long time, but this isn't the thread for that... Slightyl back on topic, what always bothered me about the Transporter was that he was supposed to be a driver and yet most of the action in the movie was lame kung fu. The series would have benefitted greatly from focusing on that aspect of the character, instead of trying to be another lame martial arts movie. I'm guessing from the trailer with ridiculous bits like the car jumping out of parking garages that it won't get any better. Oh well, I guess we can always rewatch Ronin. Wes
OK, here's my mini review. MINOR SPOILERS Wes's Barely Passable Movie Review The Transporter 2 Why is it that children always seems to be kidnapped for peusdo-evil plots RIGHT when the awesome/crazy man star has had bodyguard duties for a month? Jason Statham found himself asking this very same question right before beating the crap out of a really big guy with make-shift melon boxing gloves. And then crushing him with a boat. Yes, it's Transporter 2, another movie in the long tradition of this summer's series of "Hey, how can we exploit a previous idea instead of comming out with something new and exciting?" So if you haven't figured it out yet, yes, they made it more like The Fast and the Furious, with a few of the special effects you come to expect(but didn't ask for) in a popular film. Story Nothing that's going to hurt your head. Or make you want to hurt your head from hearing it. There's no silly angst or liberal "America is full of naughty, naughty people" crap, no, just what's needed to move the action along, and not be stupid. If you want to see some fights, they're in here. Fights All the fights were done really well. A number of good car scenes as well. It just has added special effects over the first one, which only takes away from the enjoyment (and reality) of the film. Hollywood really needs to drop this train of thought. Scenes That Only Jesus Could Really Pull Off I count about 3, but I'm being a little conservative. I'm not counting the ones that could happen, but would leave a person unable to move/get up much less do a 10-foot split-jump right afterwards, but hey, maybe the US Special Forces were really into basketball when this guy was around. Still, not as many as I feared would be in it. Music No retarded rap songs thrown in for no good reason. Only stuff that plays on the emotions well. Is This "TEH WIN!"? Close, but the special effects, and the lack of logic (especially in the last fight), makes it fall short. Plus it's pushing for 90 min. If they would have only been smart and invested that money into more fights or car scenes, it would have won an Internet. If you really want to see an action movie, go see this. If you can wait, wait 3 months to Netflix it. But hey, Statham was beating on a guy bigger than him with melon gloves. Now that's hardcore. Your not hardcore unless you have found a way to gain victory over your enemy with fruit.
kalvasflam
Transporter 2 premieres today. For those who just came back from the theatres, tell us if it's worth watching. 325486 It's worth watching. Just remember, it's simple entertainment, if you expect a deep philosophical movie with profound sociological impact, go watch some movie about one guy kiss another guy, and then getting sued for it. It ain't gonna win any oscar, it ain't gonna be remembered in five years. But for $10, it's cheap entertainment for about 90 minutes, and better than most of the summer films.
