Congrats.  Attractive looking cel.  I don’t think that is the correct matching background though.  Doesn’t even strike me as being from Macross at all.

Yes, i'm a pretty old collector, and Miria addict of course ! 75% of my Macross collection is on Rubberslug :

You should be able to make a decent "correct" background for your cel now that Shawn has tipped you where to look...

The only thing I was really interested in were the illustrations, in particular the Masami....

It's funny because I think it originally sold on Mandarake for under 500 USD and I thought that was high back then....at least I was able to snag a couple back when prices were "reasonable"....I am just glad none of these people who just now are getting into collecting Macross art and cels were not around 10-20 years ago...LOL!

Sadly, unless there is revised interest in SDFM I would assume all the value will die with us. I imagine that all the fellow SDFM lovers are in their 40s which typically is when you would have the most purchasing power. Makes sense that the prices have risen with the purchasing power of the fan base.

Not sure if the new Macross shows attract young people to SDFM, hopefully they do. That way the Macross fan base continues to expand and get younger. That would insure it’s value.

I hope you are wrong....I am hoping the prices keep going even higher!

I am all for attracting new younger fans...especially those with unlimited disposable income! :good:

Anyone's wallets a lot thinner this morning?

Amazing Macross art once again via Heritage Auctions.....even more amazing were the final auction prices.....1000 USD was more or less the minimum price for the priviledge of owning anything Macross-related from today's listings....

A sampling of the more impressive selections.....

Macross Hangar Illustration - (Artmic? Unused ARII/IMAI boxart?)....7500 USD

The "Hangar" illustration can be found in the Macross - Magazine for Anime and Hobby Fan ARII/IMAI booklets Volume 5, page 16 - upper left hand corner....so it looks to have been concept art for the Macross Factory kits....maybe once they had the actual lineart for what the hangar was supposed to look like, they commissioned Takani instead and ditched the "Artmic" version?

An outstanding auction. Heritage Auction definitely out did themselves, again.

This one looks like it's Kamjin removing or wearing his helmet.

I have not had a chance to try and pin-point the episode/sequence...but to me it looks like he is in a N-Ger rather than a Glaug

All of these cels are so cool! I'm not too knowledgeable on these kinds of things, though. That brings up my question, what's up with the "vinegar smelling cel" thing and why must cels be quarantined if they have this?

"Vinegar Syndrome" basically means the celluloid (the clear sheet the art is painted on) is "decomposing" due to poor storage conditions.  During this process, acidic vapors are produced which smell like vinegar.  It is these vapors, containing the acid, that then "infect" other cels, which is why once "vinegar syndrone" has started on one cel, it needs to be kept away from other cels so they do not become "infected" and irreversibly damaged.  Once a cel is infected, it cannot be cured/repaired.  All you can do is slow the process of decomposition by moving the cel into better storage conditions and away from other "healthy" cels.

I have never heard of the auction site before. I saw it linked in another group.  I am not bidding.  Their starting bid is too high in my opinion for that cel.  Plus if you read the fine print there is a 27.5% buyer’s premium on top of the sale price.  That definitely makes it over priced in my opinion.

Posted

......and don't forget the latest round of thousand+ dollar Macross Art is now available at Heritage Auctions.......https://comics.ha.com/

I bid my maximum on some Masami art on the last one and the final price was waaaaaay more than what I am paying for my upcoming WDW trip with the kids...on the bright side, at least I have a couple of pre-paid trips sitting in my archives appreciating faster than any stocks I own...

I agree with mokman, the Bonhams strategy with a high starting price and the buyer's premium of 27.5% probably won't bring on the bidding war. But who knows nowadays.

B-12 from the same sequence sold for around 2200 usd last month on ha...

Someone with a bid at 3000 will take it....either way....both overpriced....same with everything else sold on HA and probably this new auction site.....still, now we have a second place to cash in when the time comes

Bonhams is a rather old brick and mortar auction house.  I don’t know if online is a new outlet for them, but this is the first time I’ve become aware of them.  If the Heritage auctions are any clue this one might get some action as well.

Posted

I'm just glad I was able to grab some of my stuff at what now would be considered bargain prices....there's no way I can even compete on even the items that once languished on Mandarake as unsold for years....now suddenly they are fetching thousands

Posted

Well no one in the end seemed to think the cel was worth the starting bid.  The auction ended yesterday with no bids placed.  Given the craziness of the market the last number of years I am slightly surprised there were no takers, but then again not too surprised.

Yes I am quite interested to see where the mecha auction on YJ ends up as I have a cel from the battloid sequence and the matching douga for the valkyrie already in my collection.  It would be nice to get these new ones as well but more than I am willing to spend at this point.
