HWR MKII Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 I have some scans of line art for various hangars on the macross if you would like me to post them for ideas? Quote
HWR MKII Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Ill have to resize them since i scanned them at 400 DPI but at 640x480 they will still be good. Ill post up tomorrow. Quote
Grayson72 Posted September 9, 2005 Author Posted September 9, 2005 Quick update, I heard from William, he said they are moving ahead with production of a 5" thick and a 7" thin base, both with the kite symbol. This is their first foray into Macross and he has stated that startup costs for the bases are fairly expensive so it's understandable that he wants to test the market first with a few designs. I'm sure after initial sales do well there will be more bases coming, i.e. the Zentradi symbol and the skull squadron. I know I've got lots of models that need all kinds of bases. Cheers Quote
Less than Super Ostrich Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 Great news... I'll make sure to hype these bases up when they come out. I'm a regular at Starshipmodeler.com ... so I'll let people know over there. Armorama and AircraftResourceCenter too. Quote
Dax415 Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 Will any of the bases come with a rod for in flight mode valks? Quote
big F Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 (edited) Well I would be interested in buying some. as I live in the U.K shipping costs would be important so thinner bases would save on shiping, but I like what I see. Edited September 11, 2005 by big F Quote
Grayson72 Posted September 12, 2005 Author Posted September 12, 2005 Will any of the bases come with a rod for in flight mode valks? 327520[/snapback] I would doubt it, but you can get a brass rod at any hardware store for cheap. Quote
Dax415 Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 Looks like I will have to try that, which size base would be best for modifying with a rod for in flight mode valk? Quote
Less than Super Ostrich Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 Consider loading up on cheap clear acrylic rod from usplastics.com. A little heat gun and a coffee can (to guide the rod around the grooves for an even curve) and you got a great stand. Quote
Dax415 Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 Wow! Great Idea......I know this is a bit off topic but how does the Valk mount onto the rod? Is it glued in place is their something fancy done to mount it? I was going to add a alligator clip or 2, to the end of the metal rod so it could "clip" onto the valk. Quote
Grayson72 Posted September 12, 2005 Author Posted September 12, 2005 (edited) LTSO that's a great tip! Is that your's in the picture? Oh and Dax, no it usually requires you punching a hole in the valk in some place inconspicuous. Edited September 12, 2005 by Grayson72 Quote
Less than Super Ostrich Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 It is mine... believe it or not that was my first resin kit. Remember when Valkyrie made those for $50? And yes, I drilled two tiny holes in the bottom of the vf-4g and two holes in the top of the stand and CA glued two small rods in there to mount the vf-4g. Quote
electric indigo Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 Here's the same kit (in progress) with my preferred method of impaling: I use a 1 mm steel wire, it can actually carry a lot of weight, and it doesn't draw away too much attention from the kit like a plexiglass tube or the ubiquitous brass rod. -i- Quote
Less than Super Ostrich Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 Indigo, That looks absolutely beautiful. DOn't you just love that kit? You did a great job cleaning that up. It looks so smooooooth. I love the lines on that jet. Quote
Dax415 Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 Thanks for the ideas guys, now i've really got some options on how to mount my valk. Can't wait to see how the stands turn out. By the way nice job on the VF-4s they both look great. Quote
electric indigo Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 Yes, the VF-4 is such a beautiful bird. Extra kudos to Valkyrie for the recast and TSP for fixing the canopy. Now it only needs the decals I ordered from Anasazi. And a base... -i- Quote
modelbaseguy Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 Well it is finally here gang, first of the bases are curing up now. I have added them to the website so put your order in today. I really have to thank all of you for your input on this project and I look forward to working with you on the next batch of bases. I am sorry that it has taken this long to get these in the works but you all know Murphy's Law. The thicker 5" base is ready to ship and the Larger base will be ready this weekend so they both should start shipping Monday. Take care all and have a great weekend! Quote
Less than Super Ostrich Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 Just went on your site and bought 3.... may have to buy more later, but I'm hoping maybe you do some other designs down the road. Quote
Grayson72 Posted September 29, 2005 Author Posted September 29, 2005 (edited) I ordered one of each for now, I'm sure I'm gonna need more in the future. Did anyone else place an order yet? Edited September 29, 2005 by Grayson72 Quote
Chas Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 Unfortunately I'm gonna have to wait for at least a couple of months as I'm in the process of moving to South Korea and visiting with various family members untill the end of October. Nut when I'm settled I 'll be ordering 4-5 for the first batch and more a few months after that. Quote
Mechleader Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 I ordered one to go with the Minmay Chinese Dress (standing one). I will order more soon for the Valks. Quote
Less than Super Ostrich Posted October 1, 2005 Posted October 1, 2005 I get the feeling by the lack of response that this thing isn't getting enough attention. I think Grayson worked hard to get this guy interested in doing something. I hope it's not in vain. I hope I'm not misconstruing the lack of response as a lack of interest. Quote

Less than Super Ostrich Posted October 1, 2005 Posted October 1, 2005 Got mine today. Good base cast out of solid resin. A few bubbles here and there (but almost entirely on the underside, so not a problem). It's not as even around the edges as I would've liked. The 5 inch diameter "thick" one is much better than the 7 inch diameter "thin" version. The kite is very neatly scribed into the base. I'm glad I got them. Quote

Very nice engraving on the kite, the flat surfaces on mine are perfect with no bubbles but yeah what's up with the slightly rough edges? Quote
Mechmaster Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 I just placed an order for 4 of the 5" bases. I will probably need more in the future. Quote
Mechleader Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Hi, got my base on Sat. Looks great!!!! Thanks. Will post pics soon.!!! Look forward to getting more! Quote
Less than Super Ostrich Posted October 4, 2005 Posted October 4, 2005 Pic here with my VF-11 Jamming bird. Already drilled the hole for acrylic rod. Brushed some of the putty dust into the grooves so you could see the kite better. http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?...e=post&id=26175 Quote
Aurora-7 Posted October 4, 2005 Posted October 4, 2005 (edited) LTSO, How did you bend the acrylic rod? I want to do the same for my base. Oops! Never mind. I just saw your Sept 11 post. But if you do read this, How long did it take for you to get that curvature? Edited October 4, 2005 by Aurora-7 Quote
Less than Super Ostrich Posted October 4, 2005 Posted October 4, 2005 Aurora, Not long at all. I lean the acrylic rod in one of the grooves of the coffee can and wave the heat gun over it until it starts to bend (about 30 seconds to a minute depending on how hot your heat gun is). Then when it gets soft and bends, I start working it into the grooves of the coffee can to get a perfect half circle (REMEMBER TO WEAR GLOVES!!!!). I use one of the large coffee cans. I'm not sure if others do it this way... maybe I invented something! The "Ostrich technique"!!?! Quote
electric indigo Posted October 5, 2005 Posted October 5, 2005 I have to say that I really don't like the "wood base"-style border on the base. I don't need "space age" stuff there, neither, just a clean edge would have been fine. But this one doesn't work for me. Are there others thinking the same? -i- Quote
Aurora-7 Posted October 5, 2005 Posted October 5, 2005 (edited) Heck, EL just modify it. I was out of my mind with glee just to have it available at all and at a decent price, too. We all have our preferences in things but when it comes to getting a base for a model from a 20 year old anime series, it's amazing to be able to get anything. Edited October 5, 2005 by Aurora-7 Quote
modelbaseguy Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 E I, you can easily modify the base because the resin will cut very easily. If you want a plain edge just use a jeweler's saw to hack the edge off and then clean it up with a sanding block. Sorry we cannot produce the bases in multiple edge treatments, the costs are way too prohibitive for that. While I am here gang, the response from the first base have been less than antisipated and I am not sure the reason. Did we pick the wrong design to start with? Have we not posted info about the bases enough around here? Has it been long enought for more people to know about the bases? Is there something more that we as a company can be doing to help get these things moving? We cannot proceed with new designs until we see some more promise from the initial bases. I would suggest that we could do a preorder on the new designs but I would hate to have customers waiting too long for their purchases. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. For those of you who visit Starship Modeler they have placed a small order for the 5" bases so they should be showing up there soon. John does not carry all of our bases but he does carry quite a few and his pricing is the same as buying direct from us. I guess that is all for now, I got to head on over to HLJ to order a VF-0A w/ghost and some other goodies. Thanx again Grayson72 for turning me on to Macross, my ever thining wallet is not as happy with you though. Take care gang and Happy Modeling. Quote
