IAD Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Sorry, I needed the webspace for 'transporting' some large files. I'll see what I can do about getting the videos up again. ~Luke Quote
Graham Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Luke, If you don't mind, I'm gonna see if Yamato will give a copy of your video to Kawamori-san. I'm sure he'll get a kick out of seeing the SV-51 fly for real. Graham Quote
HWR MKII Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 is that safe? How does Kawamori react to this stuff? Quote
IAD Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 (edited) Dunno, what's his position on unlicensed models of his designs? I'd hate to get a cease-and-desist, since after I finish the second ship, I had one last grand plan for the SV. Of course, I could always do it behind closed doors, but I do like to share these things. Then again, can they cease-and-desist on non-commercial activities? I mean, a private sale of a one-off isn't quite the same as mass producing thousands of injection-molded kits, eh? By the way, my apologies, I haven't gotten a chance to repost the videos. Soon, just hang in there. ~Luke Edited October 16, 2006 by IAD Quote
Hiriyu Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 I don't think you'll have a problem there, Luke, else Graham wouldn't have offered to try to have it shown. I think the holy one would much more likely get a big kick out of seeing what you've done with one of his designs... like making an SV-51 actually FLY Quote
HWR MKII Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 (edited) I am curious to see what he thinks of seeing one of his designs actually in the air under its own power. Not some flat 2D cutout but a fully shaped fuselage and control surfaces. Graham be sure to send the vids of the control surface tests too. Those are just as impressive as the vids in flight. HWR MKII Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 Bumpity Bump bump. Any news of any kind? I know you are busy luke. Quote
IAD Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 Yes, [finally] there is news! I just (literally) finished covering the entire airframe, except for the flaperons. The weight right now is 5.86 oz. for the airframe, but that's not including the 0.2 oz. I remove, when I cut out the battery bay and the lightening bay between the nacelles. Anyway, I'm right where I want to be, in terms of weight, so... I'm happy. Want pictures? ~Luke Quote
IAD Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 (edited) By the way, I've started posting the SV videos on Google... Not the greatest res., but at least it's something. [see below] ~Luke Edited November 5, 2006 by IAD Quote
UN Spacy Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 WOW. Awesome vids Luke! Kinda scary moment when the fan stalls at the end of the second vid. Quote

IAD Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 (edited) Ok, here are all of the videos to date, up on Google. If anybody wants the higher-res originals, PM me, and we'll see what we can set up. Control test: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=86...28584&hl=en First flight: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4...15643&hl=en Second flight: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9...94351&hl=en Third flight: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8...39063&hl=en "Sorta-cobra" clip: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=86...46894&hl=en ~Luke Edited November 5, 2006 by IAD Quote
IAD Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 Ok, I'll snap some pictures, and get them posted ASAP. (Lunch first.) ~Luke Quote
MechTech Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 (edited) SHAAAWEEEeeeeet! I finally got to see some video! (the earlier ones would not play on my PC except for the sound). EXCELLENT engineering work. The grouping of your flying surfaces and exhaust deflectors was perfectly coordinated! I believe you could outmanuever most electric craft in your weight cataegory (though I'm sure you can't go VTOL). Is your C/G off, or is it the airframe response that is causing it to porpoise? Great work again! - MT Edited November 5, 2006 by MechTech Quote
HWR MKII Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 Id have to say the oscillation is airframe response and pilot overcompensation. This isnt exactly your standard airframe. Luke is probably still trying to get used to its handeling. Man do i have alot of adjusting to do. But it ma be good that im not too used to other airframes yet. Quote
IAD Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 The airframe is nose-light, currently, which results in the bobbing. The second airframe won't have this problem. ~Luke (Who is taking photos in exactly 5 minutes.) Quote
IAD Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 (edited) Ok, here are a few photos... I realized I spoke too soon, I haven't covered the entire airframe, the control-run covers still need shaping/mounting/covering. But, overall, looking very good. Note the nice bolt-on thrust-vector hinge plates. (Very good for maintenance/painting.) (Edit: Sort of hard to see, actually, but those little black circles above the thrust-vector paddles are nylon bolts (two per side) that hold the mounting plates to the airframe.) ~Luke Edited November 6, 2006 by IAD Quote
Dobber Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Luke, WOW! that is very impressive! The Airframe looks dead-on. Watching the SV-51 actually fly brought a tear to my eye....it's my favorite Macross aircraft. Thank you for doing this and sharing! Keep up the good work! Chris Quote
Graham Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 I'm sure Kawamori-san will be tickled pink to see the vids. I doubt very much that you would get a cease and desist order, that is unless you are going to mass produce the SV-51 for commercial sale. I'm meeting with poeople from Yamato later this week and will give the a disk with the vids on to pass to Kawamori. Graham Quote
IAD Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 If you like, I can e-mail you a set of higher-res videos... They'd look much better than the Google vids.. (They'd be the same as the original Comcast.net hosted versions.) Be sure to tell us what Kawamori thinks! ~Luke Quote
Dante74 Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Kawamori should just become a member here and tell us what he thinks himself. Quote
HWR MKII Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Kawamori should just become a member here and tell us what he thinks himself. Honestly i wouldnt be suprised if A he has lurked here at some time in the past and B probably has no objection to our GK works considering it doesnt affect the japanese market sales of Macross items. Most of the kits we build were meant mainly for japanese markets only. We get them because some intelligent individuals happen to see there is a demand outside japan for Yamato valks and Hasegawa kits. If he were to come here it probably wouldnt cause too much of a problem. Its when the Big West and HG suits start sniffing around that trouble starts. The fact such a comprehensive place exists is probably flattering. Now back to the SV. Looking good luke. Are those pics from the in progress of my airframe or yours? Quote
IAD Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 (edited) That's your airframe, of course! (I guess I should have included a side-by-side shot, huh?) ~Luke Edited November 6, 2006 by IAD Quote
HWR MKII Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Seems like the timeline is on track too. Ill be back in the states by January. Quote
Graham Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Luke, can you please check your PM. Graham Quote
IAD Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Nope, all's well, no cease-and-desist. Graham, I PMed you. ~Luke Quote
Knight26 Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 If it is SK's response, we would all love to see it, heck maybe he ordered one, that would be truly awesome Quote
HWR MKII Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Very true if it is his response/reaction we would love to see it. I bet he is suprised it wasnt done alot sooner. Quote
IAD Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Nope, no response from SK yet. I'm sure Graham will post if/when he hears back. ~Luke Quote
Hiriyu Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 At some point, I think it would be neat to see a MW front-page feature of this bird. Especially with an SK endorsement. Quote
IAD Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 (edited) Ahg! I've still got to paint it, before we do that! Right now, it looks like a post Unification War specimen, sort of battle-worn. (Various modifications have resulted in the 'patched-together' look.) ~Luke Edited November 17, 2006 by IAD Quote
Dante74 Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 Patched look or not, it looks absolutely great. What's the next project gonna be? I bet you could even get a Regult to fly. Quote
IAD Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Wow, I haven't even finished this project yet..! I've been looking into a bigger, more scale (fully detailed cockpit, etc.) version of the SV, or perhaps a YF-21... But not for a while. ~Luke Quote

Here's a little something to let you know that you're not the only one making macross birds fly. I'm making a YF-19 24'': Chuck glider --- check Prototype 1 ---- flies after resolving CG issue. Prototype 2 ---- Flies nicely, crashes horribly (pilot error). Prototype 3 ---- Still in the hangar, annoying sanding stage. Quote
