Macross Forever
I love Macross and I think that DYRL is great, but I couldn't help mentioning something funny my girlfriend said when I showed it to her. "So the Protoculture civilization was thousands of years old and radically advance. The only thing left of their culture was the plate with 'Ai Oboetai Masuka' on it, which ultimately saves mankind. "That's like our civilization becoming erradicated, along with all the works of Mozart, Beethoven, etc., and the only thing left of us besides a ruined city is a Britney Spears cd that has the power to stop a genocidal war." I like 'Ai Oboetai Masuka' a lot, but she's right! It's a pop song, and the analogy is a frighteningly true one, lol. Hurin
I like 'Ai Oboetai Masuka' a lot, but she's right! It's a pop song, and the analogy is a frighteningly true one, lol. Well, they sorta acknowledge this at the end where Misa admits that it was simply a "pop song" about love. Nobody ever claimed that they had discovered a masterpiece by the Protoculture's Mozart. Also, if you had never heard any music before. . . and had no concept of any culture, I would think that any music would be shocking. Possibly even Ashly Simpson. Hurin
I'm probably giving this too much thought. . . but I wouldn't say that the song saved mankind either. Mankind had been pretty brutally destroyed at that point (only the Macross is left). The song, to my mind, really saved the Zentraedi and Meltrandi by restoring culture to them. EXO
Well the song was also ingrained into their subconcious, it's more akin to a folk song familiar to everyone linked to the protoculture. Humans, Zentrans and Meltrans and what ever else there may be. So not only did it bring back feelings of an old song, it also brought back feelings other than the warlike nature of the Zentrans. Since the Zentrans were unfamiliar with those new/old feelings, it overwhelmed them enough to be stunned momentarily. That's why it was so important to not only get the music right, but also the lyrics. The purer the memory, the more potent it was as a weapon. promethuem5
I thohght something similar.... now for giggles, imagine if instead of Minmei singing her pop love song, they had had Twisted Sister singing 'We're Not Gonna Take It'... THAT would beaten those silly aliens much MUCH faster... Or maybe just the shock factor of something like Ashley Simpson or Lindsey Lohan... (not actually sure she sings, Im not a modern pop culture kid)....

I know I'd never hear the end of how sexist and ridiculous it is. Cheers, -Brian* (Member on the old board)

Macross Forever
Actually, that reminds me of something else she said. In the original SDF: Macross (I showed that to her first, and yes, she did like it), when the big fight was gonna happen and Minmei was going to sing and then kiss her cousin to freak out the Zentradi, my gf said, "A KISS?! They should have broadcast porn instead; that would have REALLY incapacitated them."

My question is: 'Where is the Protoculture porn of said singer after her career tanked and she decided to take it all off to make money?' Actually, I remember an old fansite that made that connection to Minmay's later-day career. As I remember hearing about the creation of the show, Minmay was just a sweet waitress who, they liked so much, they decided to have her save the world. Hey, just be glad it wasn't the Macaraina! Keith
Actually, it was never about the "pop song," or the kiss. What won the war was the emotion put into singing the song. Simply hearing music didn't turn the Zentradi, but Minmay's emotions reaching out & awakening theirs did. Just as in the TV series, the kiss was only there for distraction. What won the war was the awakening of emotions that spread through the Britai Adoclas fleet causing them to rebel against Bodolza, and turning the tide for the Macross. Opus
I tend to think of it like singing "La Marseillaise" to some disenfranchised frenchmen. It inspires lost feelings. I'm not even french and it gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling.

Then so: don't you realize it's your OWN emotions that put value to a certain song? an artist can put as much of his hearts content into a song but every listener will feel something different hearing it, with the possibility that NONE feel the same as the artist who wrote it Just as in the TV series, the kiss was only there for distraction. What won the war was the awakening of emotions that spread through the Britai Adoclas fleet causing them to rebel against Bodolza, and turning the tide for the Macross. But again (and again, and again, and...) Pure emotional shock What won the war was the Zentradi's emotional reaction to the song But IIRC the kiss was at the end of the song

Actually I think this ties in nicely with my perspective on the whole "Minmay effect". (And I'm not claiming this is especially insightful, I mean it's right there...) Basically, the reason she's so effective against the Zentradi is specifically because she's a pop star, a sexy young girl (in this case, playing to a crowd of violent adult male virgins) who performs accessible material according to a tried and proven formula. It's not so much about the power of culture over those without it as it is about the power of a very potent form of culture, engineered by years of experimentation - a popular product that's been very well advertised and tailor-fitted to what's been proven to be popular. I don't think that's really a theme in the anime but it's a way of describing what happened in the anime that makes a lot of sense to me. So someone like Britney Spears would be a good analogy IMO, except Spears is less of the Japanese cute/lolicon appeal.

The reason sex sells, well, we ain't that far removed from our antecedants that were the aquatic ape. The further back you go, the more controlled by our basic survival instincts we were. Among those basic survival instincts is the absolute need to procreate...especially when violence is nearby.
