Mods and fellow MW'ers, I'm sorry but I need to vent, bitch and moan a little.

I've been here a long time, I was here even before my stats indicate, under another name, before MW went to the new server etc. The population has more than doubled, or tripled since I got here.

Then, this site had a small town feel, everyone seemed to know everyone and manners, good will and friendliness were common. These days it's more like a big city traffic jam, complete with 'road rage' and middle fingers at the ready. Some members fancy themselves bullies, others know-it-all's.

MW is at the top of my favorites list, and I hope it stays there, but lately I feel like you need to come ready to fight. Some of you may have noticed the thread about the fund raising for ST Enterprise. I really can't believe how hostile it got. Maybe I'm in the wrong too, fine, idunno. Why do so many members feel the need to drop in and just trash the show and in a few cases those who like the show? I really don't think I was provoking anyone, but excuse me if I feel the need to stick up for a show I like and take offense at a tirade of personal insults.

This is one thread I've been invlolved in, but I've noticed it in many others where members are just looking for the chance to put down other members or their opinions. Like we should all should make our signatures "F**K YOU TOO". We need a reminder 'if you don't have anything nice to say, shut up.' or something like that. When I get personally insulted, I REALLY feel the urge to respond in kind, but try to avoid the urge in respect to MW.

There are times I really feel the mods just let things slide too long until a whole thread blows up and fellow MW'ers become something like enemies, just looking for the chance to pounce. A well timed and polite word from the mods can usually diffuse it.

So, rather than taking Nanashi's(was that his name?) route and just leaving MW altogether, I'm the sort that would really rather hang around and be just as big and obnoxious an *sshole to some as they are to me. All I ask is that if I sink to their level and slug it out, you punish BOTH of us or neither of us. Seems fair to me.

By the way, whatever happened to Rick the Hunter? He was one of the really likeable early members, haven't seen him post in ages. Not to mention Shawn, I know he's busy, but he is also missed. Yeah,yeah. I'm one of those 'I remember the good 'ol days' people... but MW hasn't been nearly as much fun as it was just a couple years or so ago.

The problem with confrontation is that it takes two to tango. Yes, there are a few hostile and bullyish folks walking the halls... and contrary to what you might think similair people were here years ago when I myself joined. MW is like life, there are always bullies and punks and jerks and tools who will say and do things that might insult you or make you feel bad.

The trick, just like in life, is to not fuel their fire. Do not fight them back. This is the internet, not real life. If someone throws a punch you do not have to throw one back. Your "honor" is not at stake and the only people who will think less of you if you don't continue a fight are the little kids that like to look at car accidents and smash frogs with hammers.

If anything has changed in MW it is that people seem to want to keep a fight rolling. No one seems to just accept that other people have opinions too, and sometimes their opinions are voiced in a hostile or mocking way. But they are just that, opinions. If you let everyone's opinion burn into your skull and make a little house in there and look out your eyes you will become either a wreck or you will lash out at everyone and everything. When you read someone type in a line like "X Sucks Donkey" or "Y is terrible and those who like it are terrible"... that is someone's opinion. It is not fact and until the federal goverment passes a law or amendment stating "Macross 7 is teh suck and anyone who likes it commits a misdemeanor crime of ghey in a no ghey zone" then you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Other people's opinions have no berring on you in any way. Only you can give someone else's opinion merrit and then only you can continue a hostile situation.

I would like to see more MW members use this line: "I agree to disagree" then defuse the fight before it happens.

Moderators can only do so much, they cannot sit next to members at their keyboards and say "No! No! Bad member! Don't keep that fight going! Bad!" Moderators are police, they can enforce the laws... but it takes people obeying the laws and being nice to each other to prevent police action in the first place.

Responsability for making MW a kinder place lies in us, not someone else. When someone says something you violently disagree with, sit back, chill out. It is their opinion and it has no berring on you. Only by fueling the hate and anger of the hateful and angry can they be given warrant to surge and spread. It takes two to fight and three to make a porno... whoops... forget that last part.

Having gone into the "offending thread" and looked at a few of the supposed "offending remarks" I myself see nothing worthy of a giant hullabaloo. Typical internet banter and opinion. Like I said earlier, it takes two to fight and most of the time the true instigation of a fight is not the person who says the original "inflamatory" thing but rather it is the person who is deeply insulted and throws down the guantlet... nine times out of ten most fights are misunderstandings and can be easily avoided if you just "agree to disagree".

1 Last Thing:

It took a minimum of 5 million per episode for Enterprise. I know that during the second season or so it was under 10 mill an episode because Forest Whitaker (sp?) was blowing 10 million an episode on Twilight Zone and that was substantially more than Enterprise.

There is no way in hell that fan raised 3 million could even bring back HALF of an episode of Enterprise.

Jemstone knows this, and was laughing at the people who raised that money. It was ridiculous act of stupid people who donated that cash to the show Enterprise, especially when there are real causes in the universe that the money should go.

In various places on the East Coast Star Trek Enterprise was up against Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda when it was on friday nights.

And Andromeda kicked Enterprise's ass.

If Rick Berman had stuck with Gene's Dream of what Star Trek should be-- then Enterprise wouldn't have been beaten sooo bad in the ratings.

Trek deserves to pass for it's horrible cliches, non-dimensional characters, and outright theft of other, superior works by far better and more worthy authors. Not only that, but it has been the black eye of science fiction fans for as long as I've been alive and gives the genre a bad name. For every one Herbert or Tolkien, there are a hundred bad Trek episodes, novels, or films slammed down the throat of the public. Every time I talk to people about science fiction, the response is often "Oh, is that the Star Trek stuff?" This is a crime, since Trek is at the forefront of awareness of science fiction like some kind of self-appointed champion of the genre; a position of which the franchise is totally undeserving. Last but not least, Trek has not contributed to the innovation or expansion of science fiction storytelling since the 1960's. One wonders why the hell the show is even around when it has nothing to contribute. But that's the tragedy of "entertainment".

For the last decade, Trek has slowly but surely fallen off the map and out of the collective conscience. The series are cancelled, the films are box-office poison, and its end has finally come. I herald this end as a bright spot of hope for science fiction and the death of a terrible franchise which has convinced people it offers more than it ever did simply because of it's longevity.

As such, I will post my opinions on Trek whenever I can and post my praise for the franchise's demise. The board rules here at MacrossWorld permit bashing, heated discussion, and harsh opinion. So I shall do so.

For the second time, I think Rick Berman and the other producers of ST ARE the problem, why do you think I love them? It had it's place in the 80's to at least introduce a lot of people to the original shows, that's the best thing I can say about it.
