Radd Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 However, it's been pointed out many times that the games are EU and the EU official stuff does not neccessarily reflect Star Wars canon. For example, as far as Star Wars canon is concenred, those globes atop the Imperator class Star Destroyers are just sensors. Making them external shield generators was just a game mechanic for the X-Wing games that most people now think is official as far as everything Star Wars is concerned. Another example, Boba Fett died in the Sarlaac pit, unlike many EU stories that say he escaped. Any and all EU sources are to be taken with a huge grain of salt. Quote

I thought that the games were more official than the EU, but not the full-canon. Anyhow, I cite this source: http://www.starwars.com/databank/starship/...veiv/index.html On the official Star Wars site, it explains the "blockade runner" moniker fairly clearly. And although it doesn't specifically state the ship's class, I highly doubt blockade runner is what it's officially called. That's like Ford marketing a specialized van to Mexicans called the Border Runner- It'll never happen. 1stBRD- I call your bluff. Show us your source which officially states the ship-class name as "Blockade Runner" and I'll admit defeat. Quote
reddsun1 Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Tell George that Mel wants his character back LMAO, thanks for jogging that memory! "How many a--holes have we got on this ship, anyway?" *YO!* "I knew it, I'm surrounded by a--holes!" Quote
Pat Payne Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Peter Cushing wasn't all THAT big, was he? Darth's got a helluva lot of growing to do... Peter Cushing didn't play Vader. He was Tarkin. David Prowse, a British weightlifter, played Vader. Quote
Coota0 Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 ::sighs::Corvette is the ship type, being the smallest capital escort vessel. Blockade Runner is the class of Corvette. There are other Corvettes in the Star Wars universe. You're right about the ship size, but I have never heard that the Corellian Corvette from Star Wars was named the Blockade Runner Class, where did you find that information? Quote

David Prowse, a British weightlifter, played Vader. Oops, how silly of me. P. Cushing was also in a lot of those old Hammer horror films with Christopher Lee, among others wasn't he? I think he's got quite a resume in B-movies from back in the day, IIRC. I was just in a Wal-Mart and noticed the Star Wars section, replete with Darth Vader cutouts and other display items. The posters and cardboard cutouts were just as unflattering. Man, they've just punk-ified the Dark Lord of the Sith, compared to Mr.'s Prowse & J. Earl-Jones' portrayal, respectively. Then again, I was a child when I first saw these movies; hell, to a kid everything's bigger, I guess... Edited April 25, 2005 by reddsun1 Quote
Hikuro Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Just curious, anyone bought any of those Revenge of the Sith Light Sabers that are around? I managed to get Mace and friend of mine got Obi-wans. Diffenetly nice looking but could use some work in look-a-likes. Mace's version is WAY off in my opinion. His should have some bling bling to it, but its rather dull looking. I plan on masking some areas up and working on it at home later tonight. Obi-wans is so far the more impressive looking that I've found, haven't gotten Anakin's which changes colors. Obi-wan's has a force vibration after you hit it against something and its just a loud BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ like Agent One's woman's......uh well.....yeah Mace's has a motion sensor where moving it around will cause the loud VVRRRRMM. But because of the dark sparkly purple tube, I don't think the light can shine well...unless the bulb needs replaceing. Otherwise, I think these are a big step up from the oldies when I was in 6th grade, these new ones have more accurate SFX. Quote

ComicKaze Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 (edited) Like all the ships in Star Wars, the Blockade Runner is based on real-life naval ships. Civil War Era Blockade Runner http://www.wideopenwest.com/~jenkins/ironclads/famous.htm It's not a nickname. Star Destroyer doesn't mean "Ship that blows up stars", it's referring to the Destroyer class of naval ships...just in space. Destroyer, Frigate, Corvette, etc. all get their naval designations from this era also. Lincoln blockaded all the Southern ports so these blockade-runner steamers brought smuggling to a new level to supply the south. Geez, don't you guys know any civil war history? Lucas isn't just making it all up. Blockade Runners are the second most popular ships from Civil War history after the Ironclads (first ironclad battleships Merrimack and Monitor). Don't get your information from Star Wars games and books and argument about their canonicity. Star Wars fans get too caught up inside it all sometimes. Remember all the common themes in Star Wars are ones that Lucas uses from history. IE: Imperial Stormtroopers are equivalent to Nazi Stormtroopers. Heck, all the Imperial officer's uniforms are Nazi designs. Edited April 26, 2005 by ComicKaze Quote
Coota0 Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 I always thought the Star destroyer was an odd name for the class becuase it's far to big to be a destroyer it's either a cruiser or a bttleship, then again only carriers in the real world military carry fighters. Quote

Retracting Head Ter Ter Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 If we want to get all technical with it, then we have to go beyond the common understanding of the term 'Destroyer' as small naval escort/surface combatant. The term 'destroyer' was a contraction of the original term 'Torpedo Boat Destroyer'. These small ships were made to defend the big gun dreadnoughts from torpedo boats. If Torpedo Boat Destroyer = something meant to take out torpedo boats then Star Destroyer can mean something meant to take out Star Systems. Which is quite consistent with some SW literature which always describes the Star Destroyers as being meant to subdue entire systems on its own. Quote
the white drew carey Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 Comicaze- Your argument actually backs up the point that the name blockade runner is a nickname. Nowhere in the link you posted does it say "these boats were all derivations of the Blockade Runner-class ship". Adding in the information about the Ironclads doesn't help, did both sides during the Civil War create a new class of ships and name them the Ironclad-class? Quote

Yes, I have a few of those. I managed to be in the right place at the right time (which, in North Carolina is a small miracle), and scooped up 4 Clone Commanders, 3 Clone Pilots, and 2 AT-TE Gunners. I opened one of each, and still have the others in the package. I may just open the rest of my pilots if I break down and buy the ARC-170. It's my understanding that Commander Baccara isn't out yet, but I could be wrong. I know the next "wave" is supposed to hit on May 8th, but lots of people on the Rebelscum boards are finding the exclusive Target SA Clone Trooper early. I do definitely want 2 of those so I can open one. Also, blue guards are not too hard to find in my area, but I've never once seen a red one. Quote

Hikuro Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 Maybe he'll say, "I find your lack of Faith distrubing" Mace's saber was based on the design that he had for Episode 1. Hasbro just got lazy and never updated it to his Ep2 and 3 look. But I like the fact that they went from C batteries to 3 AA batteries and also using LED's instead of a typical flashlight bulb. True, but on the cover you see his episode 2/3 bling bling version. But sadly it looks like this still uses the flash light bulb and it also uses 2 C's like the others. That's mostly why its still so far. On the top of the handle it also unscrews, I left that unscrewed so it looks a bit thinner. Now Obi-wans would be nearly perfect, comfortable handle, thin light saber tube, LED light, nicely colored, the only thing bad about it is that force vibration. But I do love Mace's for the "Woosh" sensor that's installed, I had ALOT of fun with that, just to bad it can only go "woosh" every other time you swing it. The On and Off sounds were spot on compared to the older models...which I liked. I just finished a around against a co-worker....pretty much gave him the handy cap of me having 1 hand. ........Still wooped his ass without trying. But the bastard sliced my ear off when I dropped my saber >< MY FREAKING EAR! But we did have some good moments in the duel. He lunged at me from below and I perfectly blocked it and tapped him on the head in my counter. I gotta record these battles. Quote

I'm living in the capital of this whole freakin' STATE, and it takes a serious stroke of luck to get any of the really good toys. I just happened to walk into my nearby Wal-Mart one evening after 10:00, and the #33-#40 had apparently just been put on the pegs. From the limited number, I would guess that only one case was opened. By the time I went back the next day, there was NO trace of a single one of them ever having been there - every single #33-#40 which I left behind was absolutely gone. I felt so thrilled to have gotten the Clone Commanders, as I feel they are truly the best figures of the line so far. I can't wait to see the Stormtrooper Evolution set which premiered at C3, though. I just know the scalpers are gonna go nuts over it, so here's hoping my luck hasn't run out yet. Quote

Abombz!! Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 I kind of liked how Obi took out Grevious with a blaster. It fits the whole sense desperation going on in this last movie. Jedis were falling by the hundreds, and Obi had to do whatever he could to take out a very dangerous foe... and he did it. You can't expect to take out an enemy gracefully all the time, you know?
