stram8777 Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 I was wathing the next generation and deep space nine today and i was wondering what do the different colors of uniforms mean? Thanks Quote
Knight26 Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 Talk to trekkies, some say they actually do represent different shipboard functions, but mostly it is because in the original series they used bright colors to justify filming in color. If everyone wore the same color uniform, or all the ship interiors were the same color scheme they would never have been given the funds for the more expensive color film. Even Enterprise maintains that tradition, albeit more subtly, with the blue jump suits all having colored piping. To date the only trek uniforms I have liked have been on Enterprise and in the movies, Kahn and after, except for the bell bottoms. Quote
stram8777 Posted February 11, 2005 Author Posted February 11, 2005 I thought maybe red was command and so forth but I guess I was wrong. Thanks for the quick reply. Quote
yellowlightman Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 I thought maybe red was command and so forth but I guess I was wrong. Thanks for the quick reply. I think in the Trek universe the colors are justified as red -> command, tan -> security/engineering, blue -> medical. It's been forever since Ive watched any Trek so I'm going off of memory... Quote
Southpaw Samurai Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 Of course, old Kirk-era Trek had: Gold=command/astrogation Blue=science/medicine Red=security/engineering/death wish Quote
Knight26 Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 Good thinking but then why did Kirk always wear yellow in the original series, and all the guys in red shirts got wasted? TOS=> red = dead Quote
JB0 Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 As has already been observed, they changed the color coding between the original series and Next Gen. Quote
azrael Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 Good thinking but then why did Kirk always wear yellow in the original series, and all the guys in red shirts got wasted? TOS=> red = dead In the old days, red = cannon fodder. As stated: Gold=command/astrogationBlue=science/medicine Red=security/engineering/death wish In the Next gen: Gold=operations/death wish Blue=science/medicine Red=command Quote
stram8777 Posted February 12, 2005 Author Posted February 12, 2005 That seems to make sense. What about for the other shows such as DS9 and voyager? Quote
promethuem5 Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 I believe DS9 and Voyager used the same as ST:TNG. I remeber that alot of people had non unifmorm outfits in DS9 tho.... maybe. It's been a whle. Just remember that Red Shirts are like Cannon Fodders in the first one.... that show went thru Red Shirts like potato chips. Quote

peter Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 There was a hilarious article in this old magazine called PC Acellerator. I think the title was Red Shirt Application Form....too bad it's not archived somewhere. Quote

Anubis Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 The TOS movies' uniforms (II-VI) were the best ones IMO. Quote
Uxi Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 Yup, movie II-VI uniforms were the best. I always thought the TOS colors made more sense than the TNG, though I do wonder if there's a side story for the switch... Quote
Coota0 Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 I like the Uniforms from Enterprise, they seem more realistic to me, alot like the jumpsuits worn by submariners. Quote
Yang_Neumann Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 (edited) What about that goofy tunic Kirk wore on occasion? Don't get me wrong, I'm not far from being a Trekkie, so I'm a little ashamed I've never known. Oh, don't forget that Laverne & Shirley introduced an off-camera Star Trek uniform color in one of their later episodes: Purple=Janitor (By the great Gods, I have no life...) Duke Togo Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 The color of their uniforms is insignificant compared to the power of the Force. Quote
mikeszekely Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 The color of their uniforms is insignificant compared to the power of the Force. Yeah, but what's the Force compared to transforming space battleships armed with mega particle cannons and pop divas? Quote
Duke Togo Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 And then they realize its just Basara, and there is much laughter. Quote
JB0 Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 The color of their uniforms is insignificant compared to the power of the Force. The force is strong in Mr. Spock. Quote
