yellowlightman Posted February 1, 2005 Posted February 1, 2005 (edited) DaiCon was a Japanese sci-fi convention which Gainax (or it's early founders) did many of the opening animations for (er, anime shown during its opening ceremony). EDIT: Just watched the clip on the website, really got a kick out of all the visual influences from Macross. Edited February 1, 2005 by yellowlightman Quote

JELEINEN Posted February 1, 2005 Posted February 1, 2005 It's too bad they've never released the Dai Con III and IV films on DVD. The LD was going for around a grand, last I checked. Dai Con IV is a lot of fun to watch frame by frame. They threw a lot of little bits in there that you don't catch at full speed. Quote
wolfx Posted February 1, 2005 Posted February 1, 2005 Holy moly!! Is that Daicon 4 movie something that was done during the times before the use of computers in animation??? THAT LOOKS HELLA GOOD! EVEN BY TODAY'S STANDARDS!!! Quote

HWR MKII Posted February 1, 2005 Posted February 1, 2005 There are too many cameo shots in there i have to watch it a couple hundred times to get them all. i especially liked the Gieger alien. Quote
wolfx Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 Holy moly!! Is that Daicon 4 movie something that was done during the times before the use of computers in animation??? THAT LOOKS HELLA GOOD! EVEN BY TODAY'S STANDARDS!!! There's a lot of great animation that was done before computers. There are....but rare...and this is no exception. Same with DYRL / Macross. Just thinking how they animated those stuff like the nuke explosion and trees growing below the "SDF" firing is just boggling. Lots of work must have gone into the whole thing. Heck...."Itano Circus" missle trails were pretty hard to animate as well I'm sure. Definately impressed especially for something old. You guys sure this isn't digitally remastered or something? Quote
Final Vegeta Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 Heck...."Itano Circus" missle trails were pretty hard to animate as well I'm sure. In fact, Itano Ichiro animated even those Daicon films. FV Quote

Duke Togo Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 (edited) Watching this makes you realize what a lost art hand drawn animation is becoming. It simply doesn't look like that or that good anymore. Hey hey, is it just me, or did I see an early example of the "Gainax bounce" in there? Edited February 2, 2005 by Duke Togo Quote
HWR MKII Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 The bounce was there man the bounce was there. At least i thought i saw it too. Alot of the older hand drawn animation had a visual weight and depth to it too that gets lost in todays computer enriched stuff. compare DYRL? and Macross 0. The computer made stuff just looks too flat and featureless even the characher animations seem flatter. Quote
