Damian Posted December 28, 2004 Posted December 28, 2004 Hi All! After a discussion on Aircraft Resource Center concerning which squadrons should be displayed upon my new arrivals I've come the following choices: * The VF-0B will be carrying VF-41's (Black Aces) markings, she was the sister unit to VF-84 (Jolly Rogers) which formed the basis for Skull Squads markings...I think "Admittedly, VF-41 would make a nice choice. The Valkyrie has been closely associated with Skull Squadron, inspired by VF-84s markings. So, since VF-84 and 41 were partners on the Nimitz for several cruises in the early 80s, I can see their markings on a VF-0B easily. " - Jay Chladek ARC *The VF-0D at the moment is a toss up between VF-143 (Pukin' Dogs), VF-111 (Sundowners) or The Black Knight (I've forgotten the VF designator)... If any one else has a few suggestions I would greatly apprecitate it! Cheers D Quote
stphpo2 Posted December 29, 2004 Posted December 29, 2004 Also know that the good old jolly roger has gone ove to vf-103 now. I am not sure who there sister squadron is but if you want info on skull squadron here is a good site on the history. http://www.jolly-rogers.com/cvw.htm Have fun with this. Quote
Damian Posted December 29, 2004 Author Posted December 29, 2004 Hey stphpo2! I'm sure that VF-41 was drawn down after Gulf War I... I think ahhh so many squadrons to choose from and so little time! D Quote
stphpo2 Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 They just changed over to super hornets. It looks like the f-14's days may be numbered. Quote
Damian Posted December 30, 2004 Author Posted December 30, 2004 You know what the funny thing was? While typing that brilliant statement above out I was looking at the Super Hornet's colour scheme for VF-41's CAG bird! I'm so brilliant I scare myself! Quote
hellohikaru Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Damian Don't just look at F-14 schemes only...do look at Navy F-4 of the 60s and 70s for inspiration. VF-51 is a pretty colorful unit too. Also the scheme needn't be navy style all the time. Think about a SE Asia or european lizard camoflauge...they could look good on your valks. Quote
Damian Posted January 2, 2005 Author Posted January 2, 2005 I've thought about a whole gaumt of colour schemes and markings and I'll eventually do SEA, lizzard, Egyptian one, Heater (sp?) and Ferris schemes, but I wanted to start with all the navy Valks. The reason I chose the F-14 is becuase to me the 80's VF-1s were based on the Turkey's swing wing design and twin tails, besides if you look at most naval F-4 squadrons the markings were transferred over the the F-14 when they converted...most at least... Another thing I love about navy colours especially the modern ones is the wear that you'll see when looking at high tempo operational aircraft, all the leaks, stains and patches of new paint. You'll never see USAF aircraft get as dirty as that! Fianlly, in the near future (i.e. when I have money to buy more Valks) I want to do a few other airforces such as the Luftwaffe, SAAF, Russian etc... A long, long road ahead... D Quote
