Warmaker Posted December 17, 2004 Posted December 17, 2004 vs 9mm vs a belt of .50 cal Pretty cool! Mostly in Japanese though. Quote
Zentrandude Posted December 17, 2004 Posted December 17, 2004 hmm strangly familar to a tom cruise movie . Quote
do not disturb Posted December 17, 2004 Posted December 17, 2004 cool! though it didn't have a chance against the 50. Quote
Sundown Posted December 17, 2004 Posted December 17, 2004 Yes. Now curious to see what happens if the 9mm strikes the flat of the blade. What was really odd was how the blade was moving once it broke off... sor of wavered in the air a little. -Al Quote
NERV Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 What was really odd was how the blade was moving once it broke off... sor of wavered in the air a little.-Al vibration of the metal after it broke Quote
Solscud007 Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Wow!!!!! The pistol was amazing. But the 50 cal was stupendous!!!! The only reason it broke was that the blade did not keep the edge. The 7th bullet hit a damaged edge. If they were able to some how hold the machine gun and walk the barrell up and down the edge of teh blade, then the sword would be splitting more than just 6 bullets. The scary thing is how fast those bullets are traveling considering how slow the blade moved after being broken off. Quote
Gaijin Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 That was awesome. And the blade proved more than ample strong enough to take abuse. Wonder how a Howard Clark L6 Bainite blade would fare. Quote
do not disturb Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 i wouldn't be a bit surprised if it was a $1000 or more...probably more. Quote
Jemstone Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 That was awesome. And the blade proved more than ample strong enough to take abuse. Wonder how a Howard Clark L6 Bainite blade would fare. What he said. That was just amazing. Quote
eugimon Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 amazing... crazy how many rounds it took to finally break the sword. Quote
JsARCLIGHT Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 I always knew a good japanese sword was strong but to see it proven is even more impressive. Quote
Commander McBride Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Hey, it's "HEY! Spring of Trivia!" Quote
Opus Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 It's just simple physics. If the bullet hit the flat of the blade it would shatter. It was very common for a samurai to break his blade in battle. Wakizashi were sometimes made from broken katana. Quote
JsARCLIGHT Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Heck, I'm still impressed when I see kevlar body armor work. Having seen what kinds of damage even small bullets can do I find things like this interesting. At it's core it is nothing more than an exercise in simple physics yet it is simply amazing. Quote
Phyrox Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 amazing... crazy how many rounds it took to finally break the sword. The 7th .50cal round broke it. Quote
Zentrandude Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 yah most of the rounds fired off are misses. Quote
Warmaker Posted December 18, 2004 Author Posted December 18, 2004 Still, it's a belt of .50 Cal ammunition. I knew the sword was going to break but it held up a long time. I was figuring it was going to break up at the 1st round that impacted. Heck, you could see some of the slow motion segments where the blade SPLITS some .50 cal rounds! Granted, the rounds hit at the blade, the strongest part. The .50 is a large, heavy round. 1st impact I thought would have done the blade in. Good work for the swordmaker. Quote
ComicKaze Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Isn't this the show that will be on Spike TV soon? Quote
Sam Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 That was awesome indeed. couldnt help but think while watching it though of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and the face off against the Scymitar?(sp) weilding badguy, that he just goes and shoots... Couldn't pay me nuff to hold a sword while trying to prove that particular point of ' I can slice bullets' Quote
F-ZeroOne Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 That scene is actually Raiders of the Lost Ark. Temple of Doom has a similar scene, but Indy remembers too late he left his revolver in his other hat... Quote
ogami Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Discovery channel said Japanese sword is the most powerful sword/blade type weapon human ever created. Quote
JELEINEN Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Discovery channel said Japanese sword is the most powerful sword/blade type weapon human ever created. Take anything on Discovery or History Channels with a grain of salt. They tend to make a lot of errors. And statements like that just beg to be disproven. First of all, describing something that relies entirely on human muscle as 'most powerful' is specious at best. Secondly, a katana's high quality is due to being made by a process called pattern welding which was also used by many other cultures all over the world. Katana's were good weapons, but saying they were the best is just silly. Anyway, those video clips were hilarious. The American they got cracked me up. Quote
Mechamaniac Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Yeah, nifty, but simple physics. Who would've thought that a tempered hard steel blade would cut through a bullet made of soft brass and lead??? And the American gun dude they got is priceless. Just gotta have a big, fat, hairy gaijin in there. That dude needs to spend more time lining up his shots, and less time lining up at the drive thru. Quote
Nightbat Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Crap, it took alot of hits on the same part of the blade couldn't believe it would take so long for the gun to "chew" through te blade *Nightbat® goes back watching "Grenadier" now knowing it's possible to split a cannonball Quote
NERV Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Discovery channel said Japanese sword is the most powerful sword/blade type weapon human ever created. and wut about the new titanium or ceramic laser sharpened blades they make? i tihnk they r probly stronger and sharper than a handmade steel katana Quote
Gaijin Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 (edited) They are fine for a knife but far from good enough to be used in a sword. Just like stainless steel, too brittle to be used in a sword. And I wonder who that sword smith was...if he used tamahagane or more modern swedish powdered steel. Edited December 19, 2004 by Gaijin Quote
Retracting Head Ter Ter Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 I wonder if they had fed in AP rounds, would the blade have lasted till the 2nd hit. 20mm vulcan vs that blade would be hilarious to watch. But that was a waste of an impressive blade. I would have loved to own that sword. Quote
Solscud007 Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 Or howabout a sword made of depleted uranium? haha vs the machine gun!!!!!!! boo yeah!!! Quote
