Of vanishing ninja Gundams and logs

Long, long ago I saw one of the SD Gundam shows that took place in medieval Japan. Every time the ninja gundam would vanish, a little log would be left behind with some sort of note in kanji attached to it. What's the deal behind that? I'm assuming he left it behind as a distraction, but where did that idea come from?

Found out it's called kawarimi, a body-switching technique.
