Disney's desperate, they just bought Crossgen, the recently almost demised comic book company.... I can't imagine what Disney would do with a comic book company, not sure if I'm ready to see Soujourn: The Musical...

Did you guys ever see Shrek? Ice Age? Antz? Shark Tale?

Seriously, there are other studios out there than can do a CG animated film. Yes, it's a shame that Disney and Pixar couldn't work out a more mutally satisfiying deal, but Disney is still allowed to make movies about their intellectual property (which Toy Story is), and they're still allowed to make CGI films.

I'm not saying anything against Pixar, since I've loved everything I've seen by them (except A Bug's Life).

What I am saying, though, is that for once (I know it's hard, given that we at MW are a picky and pessimistic lot), could we not knock something before we try it?

Good, I was hoping I could vent my newfound Disney-hatred today!

At my college they had a preview for their new movie with Nicholas Cage, "National Treasure." It took me like 30 min to get in...because they checked all our bags and put us thru metal detetors!!! We're college students, you expect us NOT to bring them? Apparently they didn't want anyone recording the thing a week before the opening. <_< And when we get in their own hired security-guards gave us their speal about "Piracy takes 100 billion a year..." crap and said they would be looking in with night-vision goggles and if any peice of tech was seen, we'd be kicked out, no questions asked(yes they actually were checking). The studio that did "Red Dragon" gave us a free screening without that crap.

It makes me think I'll skip out if Disney does another free screening, even though I was pelted with free candy(Nestle Treasuers - haha, Disney made a funny! :p ) But the movie was really good, fun for the whole family. Just remember, STEAL IT!!!

PS In one of the trialers it said they're making a "Hithchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" movie, just in case you wanted your childhood raped anymore. Sorry for the thread-haking, but it had to be said.

Disney is making Toy Story 3 without Pixar in not really all that shocking.

After all, Disney has been whoring out all their other past greatness movies with wretched direct to video releases done in very crappy sub-par quality for the last few years... what is stopping them from continuing the trend?

Antz sucked... didn't see Shrek, and I'm curious about Ice Age.

It's not just the animation that draws me to Pixar but the story and the lack of over-voice acting. I hated Antz (and the Shrek clips I've seen) when I'd be watching the character and hear Woody Allen or Eddie Murphy.

At least w/Toy Story, you didn't clue into Tom Hanks and Tim Allen.

A shame but that's why we've got The Incredibles!

I started hateing disney when they stopped showing all the old school cartoons that had all the crazy violence, like Goofy as Mr. Wheeler running people over and putting tally marks on his car.

I think the oddest thing I've ever seen in Disney animation, which was simultaneously the funniest and most horrifying thing I've seen in Disney animation was a short clip from the 40s of war propaganda.

VERY anti-German (and not just anti-Nazi)... Wish I knew where to find the clip online... I saw it at a friends house. I was more than a little shocked... This was Disney?

Anyway...

Did you see Return to Neverland? How about Beauty and the Beast - Enchanted Christmas? Maybe Aladdin and the King of Theives? Pocohontas II - Journey to a New World? Lion King II: Simba's Pride? No? But everyone loves the Little Mermaid II - Return to the Sea even more than the original, right?

No.

Disney has been churning out crapass direct-to-video sequels to their best movies for years. They are usually so bad and cheaply made that they don't even bother to get the original voice talent. It's only a matter of time before we see Bambi: The Revenge! Pixar as a company were comitted to not making direct-to-video abominations that lessen the appeal of the original classic film. Thus, they made Toy Story 2 which was every bit as good as the original, if not better. Disney has no such qualms. They know that it will make money because parents are stupid and many of the kids forced to watch this crap haven't learned the hard lessons about commercialism just yet... or they too young to articulate it.

Sure there are other companies who can put out good CG animation. Dreamworks is quite nice. But Disney hasn't proven that they can do much other than make a quick buck by reusing a logo.

They may own the property and have every right to do this - but the probability is extremely high that any Toy Story 3 that they attempt to make without Pixar is going suck a whole, whole lot.

Just so you know, this nil to do with being a hard, pessimistic MW boarder and everything about recognizing talent (which makes a movie because there is good story to be told) and corporate greed (which doesn't care as long as it makes money).

Now, you tell me which one was the reason Toy Story 3 is going to exist.

Actually its Doug Adam's project. They are just carrying it on after his death. Whats cool is Marvin's voice for the movie will be done by the original Marvin from the radioshow. ^_^

I don't know if I'm the only one but I found Shrek to be over hyped. I mean it's by no means a bad movie, I think it's pretty good. Just not as good as they're making it out to be.

I actually rather liked Antz better than A Bug's Life. It's been so long I can't comment on the animation quality between the two. I imagine Pixar's movie had the better CG and animation, but for actual story and character I remember Antz being the better movie.

Shrek was good, not as good as people make it out to be, but why are we talking about CG movies other companies made? We're talking about Disney. Disney has been getting worse and worse in the storytelling department over the years, and not just with their crappy direct to video movies. Aside from Lilo&Stitch and the Emperor's New Groove their big budget theatrical releases have been absolute trainwrecks. Hercules was painful, Pocahontas was wretched, Atlantis lowered the bar even further, and Treasure Planet was quite possibly the worst trash Disney has levelled against the movie going public. Then they have the audacity to blame you and me. Each and every one of us. We're the reason their movies have been bombing in the theatres. Why? Because we apparently hate 2D animation.

Bingo!

We're not suppose to be trying to compare CG companies, the more the merrier... we're talking about Disney pillaging a quality series. Yes, there's a chance it might turn out well, but truthfully, based on recent history, the odds are scary.

Hey, I'd watch it...

...

I am a BAD person.

Continuing the "...raped my childhood" ranting, with Disney's Special Edition of Bambi coming out, does that mean Bambi's mom shoots first? :p Seriously, I think Disney going TS3 alone is a baaaad idea that will end up in the dollar bin along with their other video/dvd sequels (Except Lion King 1/2)

well, the only good news to have come out of disney for a long whiles is that eisner is finally stepping down, maybe then the open sewer line parading around as their animated film dept will be replaced with something that doesn't suck.

Eisner is stepping down...in 2006. Apparently he announced this to prevent the company from removing him sooner.

erm...what about the rather raceist depictions of a few Centars in the original Fantasia?...to be fair such depictions were a product of the time the film was made...but now the evidence is completely gone, been digitaly removed ...now we only see a red carpet "magicaly" unroll itself and not the Centar whom did the actual unrolling in the original film.

All these CG movies are too damn family-oriented for my tastes, so I don't care for 'em. I guess that's why it's going to be awhile before we see sci fi movies in theaters that are totally CG. Gotta make a movie that appeals to most movie-goers. I haven't seen the Final Fantasy CG movie, but I've heard it's not so good. I guess that's why big name studios would rather take a chance putting out another family-oriented CG movie than take another chance and put out something different. I wonder if CG movies will ever be affordable for smaller studios to do something that would cater to the sci fi or action fan.

Well, it seems that everyone's been taking this 3D animation a bit too seriously. Here are my $0.02:

Toy Story. The one that started it all. Still ranks as one of the best. A+

ANTZ. An okay movie, not really a memorable start for PDI/DreamWorks. B-

A Bug's Life. Not as good as Toy Story, but still loads of fun. B+

Small Soldiers. Haven't seen it yet. Is it any good?

Toy Story 2. More fun than the first. Always worth watching over and over again. A+

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Promising animation is marred by a half-assed script. D+

Shrek. PDI/DreamWorks finally strike it rich and stick it to Disney and Pixar. A+

Monsters, Inc. For the first time ever, Disney/Pixar lose to the competition. B

Finding Nemo. Fish are friends, not food. And this film is up there with Toy Story. A

Ice Age. Haven't seen it yet.

Shark Tale. Haven't seen it yet, but I know it completely pales in comparison to Finding Nemo.

Shrek 2. PDI/DreamWorks have the competition praying for mercy from PUSS...in boots! A+

The Incredibles. The only animated movie this year to stand toe-to-toe with Shrek 2. A+

The Polar Express. What exactly were Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis thinking when they blew $160 million on this Christmas flop? D+

Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas. Mickey and friends go 3D. Is nothing sacred?!?

Popeye. Lions Gate Entertainment is bringing everyone's favorite spinach-eating sailor into the 3D world. And it looks pretty horrid.

Madagascar. PDI/DreamWorks' next project. Ben Stiller is more of a jackass than a lion, though.

CARS. Looks very promising, so far.

If you are going to list Small Soldiers with all the other 100% CG movies then you have to list all the myriad of other "CG Characters in a real film movie" movies also like Kangaroo Jack, Men in Black, Star Wars, etc. etc. etc.

Edit: one point that a few people sometimes miss is that movie studios only see one color: GREEN. It is a proven fact that all the 100% CGI animated movies except one have all turned a very nice profit (FF:SW tanked like no tomorrow though). It is that flawed sales graph that has people like Disney making the claim they do that "people just want CG movies" because if you compare all the CGI cartoon movies against all the traditionally animated cartoon movies released in the last seven years the average CGI movie makes a clear profit of well over $50 million each (even figuring in the dismal $113 million loss of FF) and traditional animated movies LOSE $5 million! (I actually have a nice graph and doccumented numbers somewhere that show this that I can post if people don't believe me).

It's all in the numbers and sadly Disney sees financial numbers and not the smiling faces of viewers. Once again, they just don't get it.

Yes! I saw that. A story about a little German boy named Hans who eventually turns into a Nazi War soldier and dies. There is actually a whole collection of that type of disturbing propaganda Disney has an it is available on DVD somewhere. Phil who's one of out ex-Disney guys showed them to us. That was Disney alright.

Oh yeah, the Donald Duck one was hilarious.
