I'd like to display a 1/48 on some realistic looking tarmac or carrier-marked surface. Is there a reasonably priced material or pre-built base out there for that?

I would make my own, but am not sure my modeling skills are as good as what I might be able to find made already.

those verlinden modern carrier deck displays are IMPOSSIBLE to find these days... I don't see them on their site, and I can't find anyone else that carries them. I wanted to get a few for some 1/72 aircraft dioramas I am building, but I can't find any!

Close enough? GI Joe USS Flagg is I would guess around 1/200 scale. Maybe 1/300. Quite a ways from 1/48 or 1/72. It's not to scale unless you can fit half of an airwing or more on deck.

One of the guys from my club uses rag resume paper and uses a black pen and a ruler to make lines on it and it turns out looking very convincing. He usually mounts it on foam core. For small change you can make a decent looking base.

From greatmodels.com

1/48 cds5009 Modern Carrier Deck Section (Modern)

There's no details on what this is made of...I imagine its just paper?
