Doktor Gonzo Posted January 14, 2005 Posted January 14, 2005 Boldly going where no man has gone before:Probe touches down on Titan Hopefully the probe takes some nice pics of methane breathing life forms standing around and pointing at the space probe NASA tv is reporting that the probe transmitted for at least 90 minutes after touchdown. Provided there's any kind of interpretable data in that transmission, this ought to be incredibly interesting. Quote
lt.actionjackson Posted January 14, 2005 Posted January 14, 2005 I also read somewhere that a scientist had said it was a "soft" landing surface. Maybe some kind of snow or slush? Man, I really hope they have some pics to show us soon. Quote

lt.actionjackson Posted January 14, 2005 Posted January 14, 2005 The Eagle has landed! Wow it looks pretty much like a martian desert over there. Except different. I wish they'd done up some color pics Anyway, its a very good day for NASA. Hopefully we'll hit some of Jupiter's moons next. Quote

I wish they'd done up some color pics Anyway, its a very good day for NASA. Hopefully we'll hit some of Jupiter's moons next. The descent imager camera doubles as a spectral radiometer - which, in English, means it should be capable of registering light wavelength, i.e. color. I'd bet that we'll be seeing some full color images in the days ahead... Quote
VF-19 Posted January 15, 2005 Posted January 15, 2005 So far, the little probe has exceeded anybody's expectations. Mind you, I being the pessimist, thought that something might go wrong (ranging from it didn't work to the parachute not opening), but I'm quite happy to see what Titan looks like. Hope for colour pictures soon... So, next we send a rover to Titan? If so, we'll need to figure out a way to power the thing, as solar panels won't cut it. Would it be possible to have the rover use the atmosphere of Titan to power it? Some more info on Titan: http://www.solarviews.com/eng/titan.htm Quote
lt.actionjackson Posted January 15, 2005 Posted January 15, 2005 The color pics came in and Titan is....orange??? I guess I expected it to be blue. I was actually hoping the probe would land in a Titan ocean, but the fact that it made it there and actually landed and managed to send back over an hour's worth of data is a very impressive feat to me. Quote
McKlown Posted January 17, 2005 Posted January 17, 2005 Has anyone heard if they're going to release that sound recording the probe's microphone made? Apperently it's just Titan wind, but it would still be cool to listen to. I was disappointed when I found out the Mars rovers didnt have microphones, since the last probe before them did but was lost before it could be used. Quote

Jemstone Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 Treatment, thanks for posting that. That's a very good question to why such a find has gotten so little press stateside.... I'll bet you anything had it been located elsewhere like say in the Atlantic ocean, it would be all over the news as the possible "Lost City of Alantis". Great discovery tho. Quote
Opus Posted February 4, 2005 Posted February 4, 2005 That's pretty rad. My first reaction from the pics was that it seemed kinda Aztec-ish. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some connection between ancient Asian cultures and pre-columbian South America. Quote

lt.actionjackson Posted February 4, 2005 Posted February 4, 2005 I actually saw a show on the History Channel (yes, I actually watch the History Channel) about those ruins and it was very interesting. They had divers from National Geographic taking pictures of the site and commenting that they were pretty convinced that it was man made. Of course, they trotted out a geologist who tried to debunk it, but he didn't come off very convincing to me. But then they brought out Graham Chapman who really doesn't have a lot of credibility, but has some great theories about ancient cultures. Quote
