We DO have a plan to go into space that doesn't rely on hitch-hiking in Soyuz modules! That problem has already been solved by using private corporations. Space X should be able to bring people to the ISS this year: http://www.spacex.com/dragon.php Still it's interesting to see they have salvaged as much as posible from the Orion program. Wonder what kind of plans NASA has atm for manned spaceflight that require a crew vehicle that can go beyond low earth orbit. Quote

I didn't know a third party orbital spacecraft was that far along (suborbital I knew about). Good to see they are nearly ready to go with that. Quote
JB0 Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 (edited) It is not due to be ready till 2016, and NASA says they can't make that date... Soyuz it will be. You misunderstand. I know we will be hitch-hiking for a while, but it was looking like that was ALL we were going to be doing after Constellation got canned. Now there's a plan to return to flying our own spaceships again. Edited June 15, 2011 by JB0 Quote

Gui Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 Japanese Ministry of Self-Defense Spends $1000 on Flying Robot Soccer Ball According to the video, this is the world's first truly spherical flying robot [...]. It can buzz around at up to 60 kilometers per hour [about 40 mph] or hover stably in narrow spaces like hallways. But its neatest trick is to land by just smacking into the ground and rolling to a stop to absorb the impact. It's also ideal for operating indoors, since keeping all of the flying and steering components inside the robot lets it happily bounce off walls, doors, windows, light fixtures, and startled people.
