Came across this when going through my DEC 1991 vol.149 issue of the monthly Bandai Making Journal and strangely it refers to this design as the VS-XS.

Both BMJ / B-Club were official Bandai publications back in the day and you'd think they get it right so is this a typo (or did Animage have the typo) or did it just change over time to conform to having a VF prefix ... anyone know?

It's a typo... in Bandai Monthly Making Journal.  Both the initial teaser in the November 1991 issue of Animage and subsequent coverage use "VF-XS".

The name "VF-XS Valkyrie II" was used for several different designs as development of the series went on, it started out as the name of the proto-VF-2SS and eventually jumped to the design that became the VF-2JA and one or two others before vanishing entirely.

Well, considering that the article also introduces it as "the Valkyrie from 300 years later", I'm guessing that this was bleeding news at the time of publication, and the creators of Macross II were still in the process of developing the OVA.

Yes, both articles are from relatively early in the OVA's development when the series concept was for a setting 300 years after the First Space War (c.2312) instead of 100 years from the then-present day and 80 years from the end of the First Space War (2092).

... is it just me, or does it only have 1 (one) head laser?

Beam cannon, but yes.

Just some more findings of the pre VF-2ss nomenclature in some B-Clubs previously not mentioned that I recently came across...

But first here's the Animage referenced earlier from Nov 1991 which shows the prototype body (single head laser, different panel lines, actual landing gear, etc.)...

Then just a couple months later, the Jan 1992 B-Club Magazine #74 shows the new body type but still references it as the VF-XS...

And then the May 1992 B-Club #78 has an announcement in the next issue (#79) they will cover OVA Macross II in which case it is labelled VF-2SS.

It's interesting to see how things had unfolded where they were trying to finalize the design, the naming, the time arc, etc.

Just out of curiosity, did the mecha designer for Macross II do any other prominent work?

I think this might be one of the OLDEST replies to a quote...but yeah, since this thread got resurrected...the original vf-2 designer was sort of famous....if you consider Zeta Gundam 'famous'  :)

The main site (has an english version)

Here is a book with his VF-XS included amongst the Gundams...if you had $300 to buy it (someone please do...I want to see what else is inside!)

just found a cheaper book-a design works from a different artist who worked on MII just last year

Apparently there is some macross II content inside

One and a half pages worth... not enough to justify buying the book for it, I think.

When you are at the point of collecting as many of us are here, you start to feel lucky if you can still uncover any little slivers of Macross content hidden in a few pages of some book 😛
