wolframbane
Would anyone know the name of the F-14 Tomcat squadron that Maverick and Goose were part of in Top Gun?
GRAND CANNON
Wasn't it "Ghostriders"?
glane21
I think it was indeed Ghostriders. Cool name.
David Hingtgen
No, they only used the RADIO CALLSIGN "Ghostriders". However, no squadron uses that callsign, not even the Ghostriders. Ones I know off the top of my head: Jolly Rogers, callsign Victory Bounty Hunters, callsign Bullet Ghostriders, callsign Dakota Black Aces, callsign Fast Eagle Satan's Kittens, callsign Hellcat
Coota0
Were they using Ghost rider at the beginning of the movie or just while at TOPGUN? I know Voodoo was used at the end of the movie.
Chronocidal
Well, I do know it was used in all the tower-buzzing scenes, and there was one each at Top Gun and on the carrier. Dunno really. I actually prefer the names used in HotShots... "Knuckle Underwear Velveeta, this is Foxtrot Zulu Milkshake..."
Opus
It's quite strange. They have VF-1 on thier helmets but they have VAW-110's insignia on thier flightsuits. VF-14 was an F-14 squadron at the time called "Wolfpack" and VAW-110 was an EC-2 squadron called "firebirds". Why didn't they just use the real VF-1? VF-14 was an F-14 squadron at the time called "Wolfpack" and VAW-110 was an EC-2 squadron called "firebirds". Why didn't they just use the real VF-1? Because it's a movie about the military, and IIRC, there is some government regulation that says that whenever an actor is shown in a Military uniform, there has to be something out of place, or something that doesn't quite belong. With dress uniforms, they usually pull this off by inserting a different service's ribbons or medals etc, or service stripes etc in the wrong locations. With the Top Gun flight suits, they probably just grabbed random patches, and sewed them on. Bottom line, only a real aficionado, someone who was in, or had been in the Military would be able to spot the inconsistencies, and also not be offended by an actor wearing the uniform who did not earn the right to do so.
