Valk009 Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 Hi guys, A friend of mine, together with me have been working on this little gem for quite some time now (mostly weekends) and now it is finally done! What do you guys think? The first one measures 20 x 20 cm and the second one 20 x 30. Quote
UN Spacy Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 I think they're absolutely GORGEOUS! The images a very well done. WOW......are those frosted glass pieces? Quote
Valk009 Posted September 3, 2004 Author Posted September 3, 2004 The portrait is actually carved/cut into the glass and the "frosted" effect to create shadows and highlights were done by using acid! Quote
UN Spacy Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 ACID trip eh? (j/k) I bet these little beauties would sell for big bucks if you ever put em on E-Bay. Did you do all that carving by hand or was it computer aided? Quote
Valk009 Posted September 3, 2004 Author Posted September 3, 2004 The draft was scanned into the computer, edited and modified as some desgins cannot be mad due to the nature of the glass. Then comes the fun part, carving into the glass This is a real trial and error situation as sometimes when you think you got it right the glass just cracks right in front of your eyes and it is all over again Success rate is a good 70% The small Minmay portrait was pretty straight forward and got it in one go but the bigger version took us three times! Quote
Yohsho Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 That's sooooo cool. And they're pretty big as well. Quote
Knight26 Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 Those are sweet, I love well done glass sculptures like that, have any more in the pipe? Quote
Macross_Fanboy Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would like one of those! Good job! Quote
dyowelb Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 whoa...those look really nice... i like the second one... thanks, d Quote
rarityraider Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 Woow! Very nice. I love the first one. Quote
MAXXxxx Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 Here is the second one! hmm, could you make me one of this? or if possible an Ishtar one (based on a largr image of the attachment) just tell me a price and all (including shipping to europe) so I could say yes(I have that money for that) or no (too expensive to little ol' me) Quote
ewilen Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 I looked at the first and thought, "That's really great." Then I looked at the second one and said to myself, "Even more awesome." Great work, Valk009. Quote
Stamen0083 Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 Best. Collector's. Piece. EVER. I love stuff like this. It shows you are truly a fan. Way to go. Quote
halfan Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 Ah, so that's what they look like Have you thought about my suggestion to use tinted glass or at the very least shine a colored light behind the etching to illuminate it? You guys should email Mikimoto and sent a picture of your wonderful fanart Quote
Valk009 Posted September 6, 2004 Author Posted September 6, 2004 Hi guys, I have got quite a few request since posting up this thread regarding these glass portraits. My friend and I are thinking of making a small run for interested parties but it will all depend on the amount of interest, time, price etc... We will also be accepting commission works in a later stage! As for now, have a look at some of our other works and will get back very soon with prices for the pieces! Here is Rei from EVA! Quote
Angel's Fury Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 Your Rei & Asuka looks AWESOME!!! Quote
Yohsho Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 Your Rei & Asuka looks AWESOME!!! yes agreed So this isn't a professional thing then? Quote
bigkid24 Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 Those are pretty sweet. I've always thought things like that were cool but the subject matter never did anything for me. Now that I see these I really want this stuff! Quote
That NOS Guy Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 I for one would shell out some serious cash for work of that nature. Keep up the great work! Quote
The_Major Posted September 7, 2004 Posted September 7, 2004 Wow! just wow, let me know when you start taking commisions i have one for ya Quote
Wabbit Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 Whoow, that first Minmay and the Eva girls look very nice! Quote
Valk009 Posted September 8, 2004 Author Posted September 8, 2004 Okay guys, we will be taking in limited orders soon for these glass portraits, want to keep these exclusive and to be honest they are a pain to make We are now just doing some final calculations on cost! Expect the small sized portrait to be around US$70 and the large US$85 exc. shipping; trying to find a cheaper supplier and hoping to buy the raw material in bulk to bring the cost further down because shipping and insurance will be a bummer (glass is heavy and fragile!). Quote
The_Major Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 well if you have plans to do a misa one put me down  Quote
JValk Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 both EVAs are cute - the 2nd minmay is a bit long in the chin - but the first minmay IS AWESOME and some drooling otaku would pay HUNDREDS for it no joke. put some pink and blue backlighting on that baby and you have a new business! CONGRATS! Quote
JValk Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 (edited) As you can tell, I'm a particular fan of that Mikimoto Minmay... Edited September 9, 2004 by JValk Quote
