I just finished downloading eps. 1-6 of Soukyuu no Fafner - Dead Aggressor ( 蒼穹のファフナー ) and I'll be watching it momentarily. A review will be ready by the end of the week.

In the meantime, for those who are currently watching it, post your thoughts on the series.

So far out of all the eva clones, this one looks to be pretty good. There were alot of moments which I could've cried "EVA CLONE ALERT! EVA CLONE ALERT!" But generally its quite entertaining. Fafner despite having the same "cloned" character designs from Gundam Seed (same whatshisname char designer), has a very "melodrama" feel to it. It seems to throw in random mythical/famous people's names into their military apparatus. Example, Welles Shield (Orson Welles?), Broomhilde System and etc. Don't know where does the word FAFNER comes from.

4-5th episode already one of the major characters has kicked the bucket, Rei II style. So like...hehe.....we'll see where this goes.

hmmm...

well reviving an old topic now that the show has had some time its on ep 17ish and it seems to be comming along great. I am enjoyingit far more then EVA nr Rah dunno why but I am. Although the festums are always the same thing basically the show has interested me enough to watch it.

As for the character designs yeah the guy who did them can't design characters worth anything (look at S-cry-ed SEED and SEED destiny) they are alyways the same with simply different hair.

"Anata soko ni masuka?" or translated "Are you there?"

A question of self existence. Very much like Eva's human instrumentality project and the AT Field theory. <_<

At least that much i gathered from episode 15-17.

I actually watched the first couple of episodes and it wasn't too bad, actually. Not real big on the character designs (they look kind of sketchy), but the story was decent, if somewhat cliched. I'll watch more when I have the time.

just think of EVA with gundam seed charactors. But for some reason I kinda like it. Can't wait for the next ep release.

This just in from the Anime News Network:

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Geneon Entertainment, a leader in introducing anime to the United States, announced today that it has acquired the North American home entertainment rights to XEBEC's Fafner, making its DVD debut in July. In addition to the series itself, Geneon Entertainment has also acquired the rights to the Fafner Original Soundtrack, which will be released simultaneously with the first volume of the DVD.

"Fafner has been an unstoppable force in Japan because of its lush animation, dramatic story arc, wild action and great music," said Yosuke

Kobayashi, president/CEO, Geneon Entertainment. "The 'giant robot' genre

is such a cornerstone of anime, and Fafner is the best of the best; this is a great opportunity for us to bring an exciting property to an enthusiastic North American audience."

Hotly anticipated by science-fiction and anime fans for its high production value and intense storyline, the 26-episode series takes place in the aftermath of an extraterrestrial attack, where citizens must take arms against the invaders utilizing giant humanoid-type robots. To complement the ground-breaking visuals and thrilling story, the series features energetically charged and soulful songs by the J-Pop sensation, angela, whose unique sound initially impressed audiences on the Stellvia Original Soundtrack and who will be performing Fafner theme songs at Sakura Con, a Seattle-based anime convention

(April 8-10).

Featuring characters that have been consistently ranked among the Top 25 anime characters of all time, Fafner boasts a creative team which includes producer Toshimichi Otsuki (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Slayers, Nadesico), animation production by XEBEC (Zoids, Love Hina, D.N. Angel), character design and animation direction by Hisashi Hirai (Mobile Suit Gundam Seed, Infinite Ryvius) and direction by Nobuyoshi Habara (D.N. Angel, Sorcerer Hunters). The Fafner announcement comes hot on the heels of another super-powered Geneon acquisition, Viewtiful Joe, which includes a massive, multi-pronged licensing component. As a producer and distributor of entertainment content, Geneon Entertainment has a slate of licensing programs, including the popular hip-hop style property Samurai Champloo and the highly anticipated Tetsujin 28, due out in theaters later this year.

Fafner Synopsis:

Their paradise was a deception. The youth of Tatsumiya Island believed that they had ordinary lives until the advent of the Festum, extraterrestrial intelligent life forms intent on assimilating all humans. Abruptly, their once peaceful island transforms into a high-tech military fortress to counter-attack the hostile aliens. Their shock intensifies when they learn that only they can pilot the Fafner, a class of humanoid-type robots that represent the final and only weapon against the Festums and their god-like powers.

Funny....i didn't think that FAFNER had such a good response in Japan. Thought it was lackluster.

I found it intriguing. Are you there?

To me the story was more about finding the desire to be independent (aka: I am here!) When the festums show up it forces man to cherish life and it's trivial aspects such as pottery sculpting. It definitely had EVA aspects but I enjoyed it more because it lacked the (imo)whining EVA seemed to embrace.

The "Are you there" concept is pretty much the same as Eva's AT-Field concept. Do we want to be one collective mind and lose our individuality? Why should we be an individual if all we feel is hurt and pain? Why not just become Festum (Lilith) and complete the Human Instrumentality Project. (Forgot its equivalent...but it was also an instrumentality project) The next phase of evolution...should we take it?

There was alot of whining and angst as well though...but the main character was more Kira Yamato (looks hell alot like him too) than he was a Shinji. IE: Angst and whine alot in the beginning, sucks it up and becomes a bad ass pilot.
