I was browsing through the MacComp glossary when I came across several entries concerning Various divisions of the UN military. They were the following:

A. UNAF: the United Nations Air Force.

B. UNN: the United Nations Navy

C. UNS: the United Nations 'Space Navy'

D. UNSAF: the United Nations Space Air Force

E. UNSM: the United Nations Space Marines

(F.): Curiously missing: UNA: United Nations Army

I am a lowly newbie, not having even set my eyes upon M7 and other non-localized Macross series and OVA's (Though who could blame me, even HK bootlegs aren't cheap when they're of an entire series+OVA's) so some of these divisions might have very well had screen time and I would not have known of it. At any rate, does anyone know if these divisions (still) exist, and what they're ranks are composed of in terms of vehicles, mecha & vessels?

Also what's with the UN Space Air Force?, are they in air, space or both, and why does the UN need both a UN 'Space Force' & A UN 'Space Air Force'?

Just guessing here, but perhaps: -

A 'Space Air Force' is a force which is equipped to handle both atmospheric and space missions. An example of this could be a battlegroup which is tasked with attacking and recapturing a rebellious colony planet as this would involve fighting through the planets space-based defence and then moping up the rebels in the atmosphere/ground.

The 'Air Force' is equipped primarily for atmospheric only missions, such as planetary defence within an atmosphere.

The 'Space Force' is equipped for space based missions, for example colony fleet escort, where the colony fleet would spend several years (or decades?) in space until they find a suitable planet to colonise. This would mean that 99.99% of the time, the VFs would be operating in space.

While most VFs can operate in both atmosphere and space, there are various models that were designed to be better in one environment than the other. Examples of this include the VF-17, which was designed primarily for space combat and the VF-5000, which was originally designed as a low-cost atmospheric air-superiority fighter.

Maybe the space airforce uses VFs, controls the the satelite defence network and posses AMRD platforms ? But then i though that is the role of the Spacy but oh well ask Egan Loo

I think there is a UN Army just because it isn't listed as the UNA doesn't mean they don't exist.

These are all probably 100% correct. However, if a group not directly tied to the space force (such as the UNAF) does not have access to star vessels, do these forces have individual bureau's on different planets, or are they relegated to duty on earth?

Also, come to think of it I remember some referance to the Space Marines using VA's (VA-14's to be exact), so I'm guessing that they perform a similar role to modern marines as well as older types, boarding ships and making landings from space and moving to a target on the ground, if that's any help.

I think you're right.

I thought Misa mentioned the "UN Army Pacific Fleet" in DYRL when she and Hikaru came upon the wreckage of the Prometheus.

I always figured the air forces (space and otherwise) represented fixed bases, responsible for aerospace defence of colony worlds, space stations, and other more or less permanent installations. The Spacy and the Marines would be responsible for travelling the galaxy and providing rapid response to threats all over UN space.
