Valk009 Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 I am planning on getting the Macross Plus OVA DVD 4 part set but am torn between the UK and US release The UK set offers a neath 3 discs box set, cost less than the US counterpart but only comes in Japanese with English subs. On the other hand, thge US release comes in two parts (boxes), little more expensive but has English dub...so my question is...is the additional English dub any good? Quote
Graham Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 The voice acting for the English dub of the Macross Plus OVA is suprisingly good (at least I think so). However, there is at least one case of bad translation. In episode # 1 when the dubbed Col. Millard is talking about the YF-19, he refers to it as being "made by Industries". Actually what he should say if the dub was correct is "made by Shinsei Industries". This has always really bugged me. Personally, I prefer to watch all my anime in Japanese with English subs as 99.99% of the time the Japanese voice actors will be far superior to their Western counterparts IMO. Graham Quote
Macross_Fanboy Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 I don't like the english dubs too much, they change the music for some of the scenes with the english dubs. Quote
Global Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 I think it is pretty good. Like most people here, I usually watch anime in Japanese with English subtitles. But I'll watch this in English too. As an interesting sidenote, the actor who plays Isamu is the dad from Malcolm in the Middle. You would think he'd be terrible, but he does a very good job. Quote
F-ZeroOne Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 (edited) The Macross Plus dub is pretty good. Guld does come across sounding a little gruff and Lucy is a bit too, I'm not sure - "girly?" - but very decent overall. One thing, though - the VHS version of the dub had the English language version of "Voices" playing at the beginning of volume one. Not sure if that applies to the DVD versions... Edit: changed Guld from "rough" to "gruff", which is what I originally meant! Edited August 13, 2004 by F-ZeroOne Quote

I like malcom in the middle, but now more than ever, I'll never be able to listen to that dub again. As far as the dub itself goes, too many inaccuracies for my tastes, especially the nonsensicle english version of voices. BTW, the UK release is exactly the same as the U.S. release. The 3 disc's included are the 2 OVA disc's plus the Movie Edition disc. The movie edition is the only thing that's subtitled only (and hardsubtitled at that). Aside from price, I have no idea whether the UK release is NTSC or PAL. If it's PAL, then it doesn't matter how little it costs since you wouldn't be able to watch it on an NTSC TV unless your player converts. Edited August 13, 2004 by Keith Quote
Pat S Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 If I remember correctly, one of the funniest lines I've heard in any Anime came from the M+ dub, and was not in the Japanese version. When Isamu is giving Lucy a ride on the bike, weaving in and out of traffic, she screams, and calls him something like a crazy "Bastard!". Isamu smiles, gives the thumbs up, and says "Faster?" I like the M+ dub a lot. The only other thing I noticed different in the dub is that the sound effects in episode 4 are completely different. The dub (IMO) has way better sounds for the fight in the upper atmosphere. Check it out some time. Quote
Keith Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 Ah, almot forgot about the whole 4th episode fiasco. Supposedly manga couldn't get ahold of the sound materials. Though the Japanese "international edition" managed to put that dub with the proper BGM & SFX. One more major strike against the dub. Quote
Pat S Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 Nah, the sounds in EP4 dub are superior to the sub. Listen to that entire fight scene with the sound cranked up. Much more various and interesting IMO. Quote
Keith Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 What the hell are you talking about? They used incredibly cheesey sounding SFX in place of what "should" have been there, and repeated the dogfight song from the first episode with a loop on it. Quote

Dug into my old anime collection for an English dub of Orguss... and what do you know... Bryan Cranston... dad from Malcolm in the Middle is also in the credits... That aside... stick to the English subs and not dubs... "...Original Japanese seiyuus. They just sound better..." Quote
bsu legato Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 The M+ dub is surprisingl good, especially when you consider the time in which it was recorded. I can't think of any dubs from the early 90's that hold a candle to it. For comparison, just look at the horrid Macross 2 dub. Quote
EXO Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 I watch dubs when I put on the movie and I'm drawing or something. Besides, you can't beat Myung's english rendition of Watashi no Kare wa Pairotto... my boyfriend is a pilot now, he's a pilot NOW! three words for the guy who thought of that... chinese water torture... except instead of water it should be hot boiled pee. Much more various and interesting IMO. I must concur. I actually watched the dub first on VHS tapes, and it was pretty impressive. I did not watch the sub version until 3 years later, and the sounds from the sub version in ep4 (Isamu and Guld's atmospheric fight) did not induce the same amount of adrenalin in me. NOTE: Not to say that either is better than the other, it's purely a matter of subjective viewing and personal preference. Quote

Impreszive Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 The dub ain't too shabby. It is one of the very very few I will listen to. I didn't know the Dad from Malcom was the VA for Isamu. Cool! Quote

wakobi Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 The UK set offers a neath 3 discs box set, cost less than the US counterpart but only comes in Japanese with English subs Um, hang on. The 3 disc UK boxset DOES have the dub for the OVA just not the movie, which the US doesn;t have a dub for either. How do I know this? Because I OWN it Quote
Gaijin Posted August 14, 2004 Posted August 14, 2004 Though I prefer the subs, the dub was one of the better ones....except for Voices...song made no sense...sounded ok...just made no frickin' sense. Quote

Keith Posted August 14, 2004 Posted August 14, 2004 I just don't see the fascination with the stock sound effects which don't match up with the other 3 episodes, let alone the rest of the macross franchise... Quote
valkyrietestpilot Posted August 14, 2004 Posted August 14, 2004 (edited) i prefer the subs too.i like as much of the artists original vision to be there as possible.but,i have to admit, the dub for this wasn't bad.malcolm in the middle's dad was perfect for isamu.but, guld just looks like he should be speaking w/ a japanese-hakuza accent don't he? LordSixx Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Actually, I really ENJOYED this dub, and usually I hate 'em! I thought they did a helluva job considering others I've seen, I would recommend it. I like the enhancements to Guld's voice when he's in the YF-21. Quote
Wabbit Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Yes, the English dubs are surprisingly good, except that one moment Graham described about (no) Shinsei Industries. I'm sure the one dubbing the voice of Millard should noticed that, plus the whole studio, but unfortunately it is not the case. But the rest is really good. Quote
Keith Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 There's also the strange line Sharon makes about having a sister at the end of episode 3 (also not part of the original script). While I reallize some may enjoy some of the dub jokes, that hardly makes it a good dub. -Dialogue changes? - Check! -Bad over & under acting (Guld & Myung) - Check! -Odd SFX & BGM replacements? (episode 4) - Check! -Vocal song changes (Voices) - Check! -Presence of Robotech VA's? - Check! All tell tale signs of a bad dub. Quote
isamu Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 the dub rocks. too sleepy to go into why. goodnight. Quote

Valk009 Posted August 16, 2004 Author Posted August 16, 2004 Make sure you check to see whether it's NTSC or PAL. Don't worry UK stuff are mostly PAL and I have one of those machines which will play anything...all region, PAL, NTSC, bootleg, original, DVD-R, CD-R, porn...ooops did I say porn ? Quote
jontom Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 Just keep in mind, painted cels don't talk. So in reality, all the animation is dubbed. Blame the translators. John Quote
Chowser Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 3+ year bump... well, it's on SciFi now in english, guess I'll watch the last half hour and debate whether or not to get an english dub. I've been happy with my subtitled version. Quote
Roy Focker Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 Actually the are playing episode 2 or 3 I think. Been a while since I watched the dub. Okay Malcom's father does a fine job as Isamu. The actor seems talented enough. Rest of the cast are the usual anime dubbed voices you heard in every project. Worst casting is Yang. Quote
Master Dex Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 It was episode 2 on tonight on Sci-fi, they showed ep.1 last week, but I can't seem to find if they are showing 3 or 4, they aren't listed for next week as far as Comcast tells me. Oh well, I've seen it before, the dub that is. I've never actually given myself the chance to see the subbed version of M+. Maybe someday, but there are other things I'm more likely to getting to watching first and I didn't have any qualms with the dub. Of course I can't say I like it better since it's the only version I've seen, I'm just saying from where I'm standing, it seemed ok. Quote
