Aircraft Super Thread Mk.VII
renegadeleader1 replied to David Hingtgen's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
so what do you guys make of this Amelia Earhart business that she might be on Gardner Island? The news is reporting on an expedition being sent there to search underwater with sonar for her electra plane. It seems they are basing the search on items recovered there's that date back from the 1930's. The problem is the English tried to colonise the island in 37-38 before the war broke out. At any given time there were 50 or so women there and the searchers items they claim might be hers are things like freckle cream, and a compact that could have been left by them. I think the more interesting thing about the Gardner Island no one is mentioning is the fact that a damaged partial skeleton was found in 1940 with several odd things with it including. Remains of a woman's shoe. The group that found the body thought it was a woman, but a doctor who did an examination on the skeleton claimed it was a polynasian male that had been dead for 20 years. The problem is he wasn't aware of where the body was found, or what was with it. There's also the question wether the examiner did a thorough job, as he had felt slighted at not being informed of the body as it was being shipped to singapore. After that things get muddy as WWII begins and the Japanese hit singapore. -

Tell me about it. There's three levels of spectator races at my 3/4 mile local track. A one on drag race around the oval, a ten lap normal race, and for the clinically insane... the ahem... flagpole race which the object is to do a donut around a large tire to complete a lap. -

The reason I asked about the competitive driving is because I drove in a spectator race Sunday at my local track. I've never felt so scared or excited in my life. In a way I'm just glad my car didn't get smacked especially after the car in front of me blew something putting up a smokescreen or after the leader tried to use me as a pick when I went a lap down. I started at the back and never had a shot at winning with just a 09 stock Corolla. I entered the race for experience on the track, my brother and I are putting together a car for hopefully near the end of this season, or next year. We're going to start out in the 4 cyclinder "roadrunner" division. Its low cost division that allows minimal racing enhancements, tires, and a few safety mods. It looks like the most successful cars are 80's Mustangs, Saturns, and VW Golfs/Rabbits of all things. My brother wants to get a Dodge Neon, but I would prefer a VW or a Honda Civic. -
The humorous thing is she was the only one of the Argama's pilots to survive operation malestrom alive, uninjured, and her mobile suit intact. Personally I kinda like the MILF-esque Kycillia. I guess its the mystery surrounding her.

There is a character from Romance of the Three Kingdoms from africa that's black. Historians are divided on wether he was a real person. Still just the fact that the writer chose to insert one into a text that old proves that they had some interactions. EDIT: and it happened in Blazing Saddles. -
Well you got one part right about companies using the high price to recover production costs. Your little rant on labor exploitation, and wage rights is abject and complete garbage. DVD/BR/CD are cheap to make, because they are in fact cheap to make. The materials are easy to come by, the manufacture is mostly automated, the writing and printing is also automated. This isn't making a damned pair of jeans or a sweater. The most labor intensive part would be authoring the dvd which wouldn't happen at the factory anyway and then quality control. The former is usually well paid because he has a skilled job not easy to come by compared to Long Duk Dong from eastern rural village of yu suk mi with no education and no skill besides manual labor gets stuck in the sweat shop making jeans for Calvin Klein. The disc market in Japan was, is, and always will be a niche market of luxury items for those with the space and disposable income to afford them. Because of that, and that the market is still rental driven it is less likely to be affected by collapse. Especially with the average Japanese citizen earning more than average of most of the rest of the world.

Prometheus - on Blu-Ray and DVD Oct. 9, 2012

The fact that this movie lives or dies by its sequel and what it will reveal is telling. If movie number 2 is more of the same with people doing weird things without provocation and more "what the hell is going on?" Moments its not going to go over well. I agree Prometheus isn't that well written. Take Empire Strikes Back for example. Imagine if the scene were Luke first sees Obi Wan's ghost on Hoth isn't there or the mynock scene doesn't happen. You'll wonder how the hell Luke knows about Dagobah, or why Han pilots the Falcon out of a perfectly safe cave right into the impirial fleet. No Boba Fett? How the hell did the Empire know to get to bespin? This is what's going on with Prometheus right now. Key moments seem to be missing, and people are doing things for no clear sane reason. -
So when do we get Gundam+Aika= Gundam F(anservice)? How did Godannar do in Japan?

I was over at starblazers.com reading the episode summeries for the third "bolar wars" series and I thought you guys appreciate this quote. " Desslok appears to have made a drinking game out of these meetings. Every time he gets a good report, he takes a drink. When the report isn't good, Desslok doesn't get a sip and is therefore cranky. When Desslok gets cranky, he shoots people."

The high cost of dvds and blu-rays in Japan comes from the fact that the country is more rental driven than consumer retal driven. Space is at a premium, and dvds are viewed as a luxury item so if you want to buy a series expect to pay them same as a video store would from the distributor. A $40 dvd containing 2 episodes isn't a bad price when you know you can rent it 20+ times at $10 a pop.

Bible Black was mentioned because it was pretty much the first title people noticed something was wrong and wasn't the same as the original(nevermind the U.S. is actually uncensored compared to Japanese mosiac) with footage missing and things animated as they should be. Media Blasters looked into it and found out the company did it on purpose to try and deter domestic fans from importing the cheaper uncensored dvds. It led to a falling out between companies and the rest of the series almost never got released here.
-
The problem with this is a lot of Japanese companies are afraid they will lose a cut of the cash from their own domestic dvd sales by people importing the cheaper dvd's with more episodes from the states, so they do 3 things 1) refuse to let anybody license a series untill their dvd sales run their course. 2) slap a heavy licensing fee to a series to compensate for what they see as lost sales. Or 3)deliberately sabotage their own series by editing it, censoring it, and sending out workprint editions with shoddy animation because in their eyes the "baka gaijin" aren't going to notice or care leaving the original intact of their home audience. Bible Black, Papilion Rose, and Koihime Musou are some of the titles that suffered this. There might be a 4th option of a Japanese company trying to get an American to sell a dvd with the same properties as a Japanese releise I.E. 1 or 2 episodes, little special features, and high price tag ($40-60). Its only been done a few times usually with poor results(gunbuster 2). Unicorn seems to be the exception, but people seem to be willing to pay for the qulity that show represents.
