...And Luca is TOTALLY Rickert! But the question remains...who's Casca? Sheryl or Alto...? -
I tried to read M7 Trash in Japanese, but lost patience. Later, I read a scanlation that didn't enthrall me, but part of that may have been that it was an English translation of the Chinese translation of the original... Although, yes...Mikimoto is MUCH better artist than storyteller. And, as pointed out on Destroy all Podcasts, he appears to be completely incapable of drawing an ugly girl.

It still seems to me that you have to twist a lot of stuff around to create a "pattern," but whatever...clearly, I'm outvoted here, so I concede the pont.

Hey, waiting four episodes to give the first peice of the puzzle is NOTHING compared to Macross 7...it was EPISODE FREAKIN' 37 before they explained the Protodeviln. If anything, I'm worried that MF might give away everything too quickly... -

Clearly, they're treading a fine line. I enjoy the homages, and it doesn't yet feel like a remake of the original series to me. I think it has two original things going for it...the characters and the Vajra. Alto is deinfitely not Hikaru, Ranka is very different from pre-fame Minmay, and Sheryl is nothing like post-fame Minmay. Kathy Glass LOOKS like Misa, but doesn't really act like her. So, it stands to reason, if you put them in the same situations their counterparts faced, they'll make different choices (unless it's something obvious like rescuing the girl), which will spin the story out of the SDFM orbit. Also, the Vajra are most assuredly NOT the Zentradi. Different enemies means different ways of dealing with them....and I doubt culture shock won't work with them (to say nothing of Anima Spiritia). Yes, there are a lot of references to previous Macross stories, but I think this will be its own series by the time it finishes. If it's not, I'll be the first to register my disgust...(well, maybe second. Duke Togo is more on top of things than most of us...). -
So let's see...we have five stories (seven if you include Macross 7 Trash and Macross Generation) to set up the pattern...one has to be discounted, one only works if we look at a nonexistant love triangle (did Isamu EVER love Sharon?), which cuts it down to three. Zero doesn't really work, either...mao was too young, and Shin didn't end up with Sara (that we know of). So we're talking about a pattern set by two Macross stories, one of which was pretty much a carbon copy of the other. (And, IIRC, in Macross Generation, it's the young, naive girl who gets the guy, so we can discount THAT, too. But I don't remember what happened at the end of Trash.) Seriously, though, I get your point...and I can see discounting 7 (not because the love triangle was unresolved, but because it was pretty nonexistant...I think Basara hasn't QUITE discovered girls yet...but Sivil's a step in the right direction). But, really...please don't tell me that the Plus love triangle was Isamu/Myung/Sharon (now, Isamu/Myung/Lucy, I can see...but it was pretty clear that Isamu and Lucy was just a fling - to Isamu, at least). But Plus throws a wrench in the works in many ways...there's no war, the love triangle is resolved because one of the participants gets killed, the idol singer goes crazy and gets blown up...if there's a typical Macross pattern (and I really don't think there is), Plus doesn't follow it. And at any rate, I'm not sure that Sheryl is more mature than Ranka. A little bit older, yes. More sophisticated, certainly. But more mature...? Ranka seems to have a better grasp of things than Sheryl does. But I think we're in for some personality shifts in MF, so we'll see if it remains that way.
-
I answeed my own question...? 'Cause the "mature one" ratio seems to be SDFM: Yes. II: Yes. Plus: No. 7: No answer. Zero: No answer. Two out of five is hardly a "pattern."

Yeah...I've heard that, too. I'm not sure I buy it, though...I would say that they wouldn't change the relationships between characters that much, but considering they turned Laplamiz's fleet from working under Bodolzaa into his mortal enemies...well, I guess anything's possible. Keeping it "cousin," however, does make it less confusing for people who have seen the TV show, and certainly there's nothing in the movie itself that contradicts it...she calls him "Niichan" in both the series and the movie. So yeah...just another one of those little judgment calls that ensure that no sub will be "perfect." -

By the way...I don't know how reliable a source of information Japanese Wikipedia is, but according to the Macross F entry, Ranka's cell phone is called "Keitai-kun" ("Keitai Denwa" is Japanese for "Cell Phone," although "Keitai" literally means a belt sash), and it's a robot. So I guess it feels no pain...thank goodness. -
I've seen a lot of people saying variations of this statement, and I'm not sure what this Macross "form" is... SDF M: Hikaru (hero) ends up with Misa (the mature one), not Minmay (pro singer; the girlish one) Macross II: Hibiki (hero) ends up with Sylvie (the mature one), not Ishtar (singer; the girlish one). Wendy Ryder (pro singer) is not involved. Macross Plus: Myung (the mature one) ends up with Isamu (hero; the boyish one), not Guld (the mature one). Sharon Apple (pro singer) gets blown up. Macross 7: Mylene (pro singer; the girlish one) ends up with neither Gamlin (the mature one) nor Basara (pro singer; the boyish one). Macross Zero: Shin (the hero) MAYBE ends up with Sara (singer; the mature one), not Mao (singer; the girlish one). Then again, maybe not. No pro singers appear anywhere, unless Nora has hidden talents. Is there a pattern here...? If so, I don't see it.

Oh, it's nothing special. I've been working a bit with boinger. After watching DYRL with Hurin's subs, I noticed a few things that bothered me...one semi-sorta big thing, and a lot of little things. So I fixed 'em up and sent them off to boinger, although really...I'm not sure they're any better now. (Mostly it involved changing things like "Micron" to "Miclone," so that it fits better with Animeigo's subs, keeping Zentradi-language dialogue intact if there is no corresponding Japanese subtitle, making Kaifun Minamy's cousin again...that sort of thing.) And then, boinger said he would be getting the Macross Plus remaster DVD, and asked me to set up the subs for that, which has been taking A LOT longer than I thought it would...but I'm a total n00b at stuff like this. (I'm not even sure if he would approve of me mentioning that...please don't pester him about it! He doesn't even have the set yet.) It's all for the massive Macross torrent I have planned for next year...I'm also planning on translating as many of the drama albums as I can (I'm about fifteen minutes into Miss D.J. currently. But everyone talks so fast that it's really tough). -
No, no...the hot waitress at Nyan Nyan is named Nanase. Ranka's the green-haired girl.

Oh, I've long been wanting to resub ALL the various series of Macross, standardizing spelling, fixing errors...but after reworking Hurin's DYRL subs and the Macross Plus subs, i began to realize what a monumental task it was...and kind of pointless, unless I owned an anime company that could put all of them out in nice, deluxe, uniform boxsets. So screw world peace...I dream of a world in which the ENTIRE world of Macross, carefully subbed, beautifully packaged, is available in R1! -
No, no...Mikhail and Luca! The final episode of the show is just gonna be one big manwich!

Didn't we already go through this with Edgar LaSalle...? -
The scale is pretty accurate...but if you think the Mk. II is big, try the Nu Gundam...or the Sazabi!

I've got a Mac G4 that I bought in '02. It works fine for pretty much everything I need, except it doesn't like h264. Isuppose I should get a new one... I hate to be dragged, kicking and screaming, into the present... -

Oh, sorry...I must've misunderstood you. I thought you said you knew what would happen since it was just a rehash of SDFM... -

So then, if you know what will happen next, please explain...what's the connection between Ranka and the Vajra? What do the Vajra want? What ARE they, anyway? And who's the bishie guy at the end of the OP? -

I'm beginning to think ALL of them could in DYRL...but it got annoying, so they just shaved their heads. Seriously...no, we've never seen this before. -
A few years ago, I started writing a series of short stories to fill in the gap between 2012 and 2040. I finished one about Minmay leaving on the Megaroad-01 and one about Claudia seeing DYRL in 2031, but got bogged down writing about Isamu and the "Planet Hydra Incident." Not sure if I want to pick them up again. There was also a very interesting (and very LONG) story which used to be in the MAHQ fanfic forum...unfortunately, I can't remember who it was by (although the writer's name had "Newtype" in it) or the title...but it was about the Megaroad-01. I never finished reading it (and I think the hundred or so pages that were there were simply "Part 1" anyway, so it may not have been completed), but I liked it. Hikaru getting macronized and piloting a Q-Rau (I think), Minmay getting involved with an abusive guy who was prejudiced against Zentradi...it kind of lost me when the story broguht in an EIGHTH Protodeviln, though...since I thought Macross 7 made it clear there were only seven. Has anyone else read it? Can you remember the title? I also once started reading a really awful story about Mylene going off on her own to explore the galaxy and getting raped. You can see immediately why I didn't finish reading it, I'm sure... EDIT: Ha! Found it! http://www.fanfiction.net/s/660155/1/The_Legend_of_Megaroad

Basara is Protoculture? No, no...as your references and mine a few posts up show, Basara is Nigel Tufnel! (although Nigel Tufnel may be Protoculture...which would be a HUGE disappointment to all...and yet, somehow, oddly fitting.)

I'm trying to word this carefully, so as not to cause offense (or break the rules)...I think for some, Macross 7 becomes grist for the punditry mill. I notice that a lot of political buzzwords (from both the right and the left) somehow make their way into the Macross 7 posts. I wonder if people here aren't using Macross 7 to talk about other things, or using it as a symbol of things they either love or hate about the politcal/cultural landscape. So (I think...), simply as entertainment, no one would say it was THAT bad (or THAT good), but its "message" (whther or not that message is present or simply inferred) is what really riles people up/wins them over. I could be reading too much into this, however.
