  1. I've always wondered that, too. Maybe post-Rain of Death humanity is just pessimistic that way... Anyway, I gave it six stars. Saw it first in 1987, when the TV series was unavailable in Japanese (with or without subtitles), and it's been the best way to get a quick, cheap Macross fix for more than twenty years now.
  2. That still doesn't explain why you think the fact that she has glasses means she's dumb. And shyness is kind of cute, don't you think? Yeah...I think it had more to do with what she was saying, but I can't remember what it was she said exactly...
  3. ...because there are so few robot shows done from the perspective of the military, and WAY too many "Rock Band Robot" shows, right?
  4. I haven't noticed the pronunciation clarity, nor can I figure out why the cast would make the attempt. But if you say it's there, maybe it is, and I have lazy ears. And I wouldn't call it apathy, really...especially since we're dealing with a lot of trippy, sci-fi names. Was Mark Hamill apathetic because he pronounced "Darth Vader" in an English manner, instead of taking into account what Japanese, Chinese, Greek, Russian, French, German, and Umharic speakers would be able to pronounce...? At any rate, as you say, you've found your answer. Just please don't get cheesed off if others here call her Ranka.
  5. Japanese 101: The language doesn't have distinct "R" or "L" sounds, but rather a sound that's both of them blended (with a bit of "D" thrown in as well). Thus, to a Japanese speaker, "Lanka" and "Ranka" sound the same. Sometimes, the creators or merchandizers come up with Romanizations, but these are all suspect, unless the name is a legitimate name (no one, for example, would argue that "Roy Focker" should be "Loy Focker," although you could certainly read his name that way). Sometimes, a series will be lucky enough to get offcial, set-in-stone Romanizations (like Gundam), but until that happens to Frontier, we have to be a little generous and open-minded with spelling.
  6. You love Ranka...but Nanase ALSO loves Ranka, so you and Nanase have something in common! C'mon, share the love!
  7. Oh yeah, this is TOTALLY a real movie! And did you know that the word "gullible" isn't in the dictionary...?
  8. 1/1 LowViz Lurker, you said a mouthful. I agree with a lot of what you say, but I see what the 7 creators were trying to do with Basara (whether or not they were successful is up to the viewer), that is, have a character whose actions are initially inexplicable, and then slowly reveal the rationale behind them. Which, if done well, can be just as interesting as a character who grows and changes in great leaps (I would also argue that Basara DOES change over the course of the series...but he becomes "more Basara-y," so I understand if people don't see it). I also think it's interesting that Basara fails a lot as well...he didn't move the mountain when he was a child, his singing had no effect on the brainwashed Varauta soldiers (until, that is, it was coupled with the sound booster), and he couldn't break up the gun fight between the police and the poachers in episode 1 of Dynamite 7. He succeeds in the big things, but only because of the help he gets from others. I've said it before, I'll say it again: without Ray looking out for him, the guy's hopeless. I wonder if he could even feed himself. Nor is Basara particularly likeable, which I think was a conscious choice on the part of the creators. He can be rude, petty, and thoughless; his ideals are a lot loftier than he is. Ultimately, though, I think it comes down to whether or not you think those ideals are valid (but not always...I have a friend who's an avowed pacifist, but he hated Basara, and thought he should have started the series as a soldier, and slowly learned that music was the better way to go. I dunno...maybe it would've made the series better, maybe not). And I just have to say...Max = Ned Flanders? PURE BRILLIANCE! Now I'm just waiting for someone to make an avatar of Flanders with blue hair...
  9. No one knows yet (excpt the show's creators), so you'll just have to WAFO (Watch And Find Out).
  10. It's still scheduled for this year, but there's no confirmation on when, yet. I'm expecting it to be released sometime between September and December.
  11. Since "DYRL" is listed as the "Deculture Edition Size," does that mean there's a longer version to be released at some other time...?
  12. Given that all of the names he's given are biblical ones, I would think he named them "Goliath" and "Goliath 2." Spectacles = dumb...? Since when?
  13. Ranka's a crybaby... Sheryl's a b!tch... Kathy's an opportunist... Klan's a...well, just a freak really. We all know there's only one girl in Macross Frontier worthy of our devotion. So show your love here, and join B.O.I.N.G.! (formerly N.A.M.B.L.A., but we'd rather not talk about that...)
  14. Well...I doubt it helps you much, halfway across the world, but I just ordered it from Kinokuniya Bookstore in Los Angeles. They're not sure if they can get it, though.
  15. Whatsamtter? Don't you LIKE girls...?
  16. (*PSSST* )
  17. The legal issues are...difficult, because nobody's talking but everybody seems to have a different story. Big West owns the designs, Tatsunoko owns the actual footage, and Harmony Gold DEFINITELY owns the "Macross" name in America, but also claims to own "everything related to Robotech." Which may or may not include Plus, 7, Zero, Frontier, you name it. Of course, if challenged, they'd probably lose, but no one's challenged them yet...
  18. Dude...you mean the Vajra are turning people into GIRAFFES??? How fiendish! Actually...that's an interesting idea. That the Protoculture stimulated human evolution, and now the Vajra are stimulating it again. But evolution into WHAT would be the question...
  19. Maybe we should start a Basara vs. Sheryl thread and see who comes out on top...
  20. Hey, at least she wasn't singing "Stage Lights, flashing"...
  21. UN Spacy, of course! (Is this a trick question...?) (Actually, Big West owns them, but Harmony Gold might claim to own them, as well.)
  22. Ozma would probably be cool with it. (And to think, we all figured that her shout of "Atashi no uta o kike!" was merely a cute joke, when actually, it was foreshadowing...)
  23. No, it doesn't do anything until he gets the sound booster, which is strong enough to break the mind control. (As for disliking Basara...watching him with subtitles might just make you dislike him even more. He can get awfully repetitive at times...)
  24. VF-27 EVA-01? Or does that sound too much like a scoreboard?
