Do you realize what you just said...? The three things that are set in stone as Macross are: music, transforming robots, and love triangles. If you had a Macross series without some kind of Valkyrie, would it be Macross? Well, neither would a Macross series without a love triangle. As for what happens to their mission to colonize space...well, it was obviously successful, since space seems colonized in Plus, 7, and Frontier...

Who is going to die in Macross Frontier???
Gubaba replied to taksraven's topic in Movies and TV Series
I think Ranka, Alto, and Sheryl will ALL die this week, the series will be over, and they'll just play light music over various soothing nature scenes for next ten weeks. -
Well...we know cream pies don't work against HG, so maybe banana peels should be next...let's save the dimension eater as a last resort...we don't want to take out a quarter of the planet just to get HG.

That's a "trend"? As far as I know, women have NEVER liked looking the opposite of "young and cute," i.e. old and ugly. Men usually don't, either. -
Different strokes, I guess...I iked the Plus triangle; the Basara/Mylene/Gamlin triangle seemed nonexistant to me, though...except in Mylene's head. I think the big difference is that the love triangle in SDFM quietly crept up on most viewers unexpectedly, and that's not true of the sequels. Much as I'm leery of making huge cultural generalizations, you may have a point there. I remember reading an interview with Neil Gaiman about adapting Princess Mononoke, and he said that when most Japanese viewers see something ambiguous and confusing, their main thought is, "I didn't understand that...I should see it again!" Whereas most western viewers would think, "I didn't understand that...so it must be bad." But then, look at the attack on the Gainax office after the last episode of Evangelion aired... However, I completely disagree with your view of the Macross sequels being formulaic. Yes, they all have music. yes, they all have love triangles. But each one has been done in such a different way. No one would mistake the Isamu/Myung/Guld relationship for the Misa/Hikaru/Minmay one, and that's true for all of them (although let's be honest...wouldn't Zero have been more interesting if Mao had attacked and tried to rape Shin in a fit of blind rage...? ).

And Sheryl's a big 17, so it evens out. -
I ordered mine through Kinokuniya and picked it up at the store. $8.70 plus tax.

I think that was just a Space Battleship Yamato in-joke...

Isn't Funimation bankrolling the next Shadow Chronicles atrocity? Seems unlikely that they would tell HG to get bent when they're investing in them... -
No, Klan eats Rainbow-Colored Carrot Snacks™. She's a Meltrandi, not a cannibal.

Is it this one? http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/games/ep_skullleader.jpg And if so, it's a game, not a manga, right?

The Megaroad crew and the original "Triangler"- why the hang
Gubaba replied to dreamweaver13's topic in Movies and TV Series
One of the reasons I stopped watching Gundam quite a while back was that, to me, Gundam was never the story of some big, primary-colored robot, and was always more about the evolving story of Amuro and Char. I kept hoping they would show up in Double Zeta, and was disappointed when they didn't. I was quite honestly surprised when F91 came out, since I was convinced that (apart from side-stories and things), Char's Counterattack finished the Gundam story. If neither of them are around (or mentioned), it just doesn't feel like Gundam to me. That's one the main reasons that I cling to the (most likely wrong) idea that Usso Evin is Char's great-grandson. In anime, there are many sequels which feature no original characters or are set hundreds of years after the original anime...I used to hate those. When Macross II came out here, I disliked it for that reason (among other things), and i wasn't terribly excited about Plus coming out until the guy and the comic shop/anime video rental place near my house said that I would love it, and he'd refund my money if I didn't. (Needless to say, he kept my money and got more of it, since I bought the tape the next day.) At that time, I was more excited to see M7, since that had Max and Millia in it. (Of course, a few years later, I saw it...and it was nothing like I'd been expecting.) So that was when my second Macross kick started, and I've been keeping my ear to the ground ever since...but I've never expected to see Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay again, because they've never announced that they would be back. So Macross has managed to shift for me in a way that Gundam never did...from a focus on the characters to a focus on the world. But for other people, it could be reversed...Gundam is all about space colonies and brightly-colored robots, whereas Macross is, at heart, the story of three specific people. And if they're not there, it feels like going to a school reunion and finding out that none of your old best friends could make it. As I said, I don't share the sentiment, but I understand it. -
They're taking their own sweet time with the timeline, aren't they? Only up to the APHOS Incident...? It'll be quite a while before they get up to Frontier...more if they decide to fill in the missing 28 years between SDFM and M+. And Ranka and Basara for the major characters (they seem to be getting all the singers out of the way first, don't they?), and, for the ones no one cares about...Kate and Morgan? I defintely want to see the Hasegawa article, too...

I can't speak for anyone else, but I can't watch Robotech anymore...I start wincing at the dialogue and the voice acting and the music and I have to turn it off...even if it's just a youtube clip. Shadow Chronicles, I watched on youtube, and didn't like. In the interest of restraint, I'll just leave it at that. And then there's Harmony Gold's more recent cutthroat business pratcies, but that's been rehashed elsewhere. But that's not the real problem...my impression (and please correct me if I'm wrong) is that the real problem is that M7 didn't answer the questions you wanted answered, and perhaps the creators of Robotech could turn it into something you like more. A while back, there were a number of people here wanting a Macross Zero movie for exactly the same reason...they wanted it to "fix the ending." Needless to say, that didn't happen. And, I suspect, if there HAD been a Zero movie, the ending would have remained more or less the same. If you're disappointed in M7, that's understandable. If you want more about Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay, that's also understandable. But I think you'll have to go into the realm of fan-fiction to scratch those particular itches. Kawamori could always change his mind, I suppose, but I'm not holding my breath, and I don't think anyone else should, either.

All kidding aside, I would LOVE to hear what Yoko Kanno would do with "Planet Dance" or "Totsugeki Loveheart." Especially if sung by May'n. That it...we need another "Macross the Tribute," produced by YK, and sung by Megumi and May'n. I'd sleep outside the shop the night before the release date in order to get it. Especially if it had a guest appearance by Luca singing "SANTI-U."
-
To each his own, I suppose...Me, I think the show needs 83% more Nanase. And if there's a scene without her, everyone else needs to stand around and say, "Where's Nanase?" Finally, they could retitle the show "Nanase F." Or, "F. Nanase," depending on how the show's new direction is received...
-
I sure hope someone bootlegged the show...I'd like to hear Megumi's version of "Angel's paints"...especially if Yoko Kanno did the arrangement. Makes me wonder if we'll get a "Ranka Lee Sings Lynn Minmay" album. Although, yet again, what I REALLy want is "Luca Angeloni Sings Sharon Apple."
-
Wait a year or two, and then watch it again; you might like it more. At least, that's what happened to me. And Hikaru was in it, kind of...at least, Bobby (the guy who was going to play Hikaru in the "Lynn Minmay Story" was played by the same voice actor who played Hikaru. And I would never, ever, ever want to see what "the Robotech people" would do with Macross 7. The very idea gives me hives.

Sorry...must've missed it. (You know, there's no good "Apology" emoticon, is there? Whatever you like one would look like, imagine it here.) -
There's some pretty naughty stuff going on behind the YF-19 in that last pic...I bet Isamu's getting an eyeful.

Ah...you're such a dreamer... Putting together my Macross (and U.C. Gundam) be-all-end-all torrents, I would LOVE to have everything in nice, high-quality XviD (or DivX, or whatever the hell it is) form, since it seems like EVERYBODY can play that with a minimum of fuss, but not everything is available in that format. And you never answered my question about your avatar... -

I hope I don't get a custom title...I want to see how high the regular titles go (although JB0 always gets there before any of the rest of us). Still, if they wanted to make me "Mylene's Bath Buddy" or something like that, I guess I wouldn't couldn't say no... -
"Anima..." "...Spiritia." "Hoh hoh hoh..." "...Ho Ho Ho!" Jeez, did they ever suck. Thank goodness they got eaten by Geperunichi-the-Spiritia-Black-Hole...
