I agree...most of them have been very positive and enjoyed the show. But those few wackos are the ones I was referring to. Two good examples: Treiz is excessively negative (I can't think of any other person who said "Meh" when Michael was killed), but there were at least a handful of things that he liked. Doug Bendo, on the other hand, is a certified nutjob...I haven't listened to him in a while, and I've never listened to him regularly; has he actually mentioned Frontier at all?

Not only did she sing it originally, she wrote it, too! But they needed a title that would telegraph to people that the versions of the songs are new, plus there was already a "Mylene Jenius Sings Lynn Minmay" album, so it fits in with previous Macross releases (which is appropriate for a 20th Anniversary album)...much like the way"Fukuyama Fire!!!" fits in with Fire Bomber album titling conventions, but also makes it clear that the songs will be new re-interpreations, rather than just the same old tracks. (And by the way, if you haven't heard that one, I highly recommend it, too. Even if you don't like Fire Bomber.)

No, there's been a lot of negative criticism, here and elsewhere. A lot of it is from Robotech fans though, so I think perhaps it gets dismissed more than it would otherwise. In fact, most of the writing and talking about Frontier that I've heard has said that Frontier is far from perfect, but it's strengths outweigh its weaknesses...which is very different than saying it's "the greatest anime in recent history." The recent episodes of Destroy All Podcasts DX and Duke Togo's review for Ain't It Cool News (and most of the commentary here) are cases in point. But yeah, if you want something that really slams Frontier as boring, unorginal, ugly, and just all-around lame, you'll probably have to check out Treiz on Robotech.com.

For that one, you'll want "Mari Iijima Sings Lynn Minmay." Quite a nice little album.

Best Macross animated production (1982-2008)
Gubaba replied to Nexx Stalker's topic in Movies and TV Series
*whew* For a moment there, I thought you said "new and hip-hop songs." And yeah...much as I love Minmay, Frontier's songs sound a lot more 2009/2010 than "Zero-G Love" does. But I'm sure if any of us are still alive in 2059, we'll be laughing at how dated "What 'bout my star" and "Seikan Hikou" sound... -
FIXED! (Yeah, I know...she wasn't really eaten.)

Incidentally, I picked up issue #7 today, and I think I've "cracked the code" for some of the mechanic sheets... Since, for SDFM, the UN Spacy mechanic sheets number 02 is the VF-1J, and 07 is the Super Valkyrie, here are my guesses for some of the others: 01: SDF-1 Macross 03: VF-1S 04: VF-1A 05: VF-1D 06: Armored Valkyrie. I would guess that they'll go into destroids after that...but I'm not sure. But we'll all find out next issue, when they do the Monster. I'm kind of sad that there hasn't been much Frontier stuff in the magazine yet, but I'm assuming that they want everybody to buy the upcoming art book, and so are holding their cards a little close to the chest on that stuff. Probably next year we'll get more.

I'm overwhlemed by the force of your logic. Ishtar is, as you so justly imply, a real babe. Like most people though, I like her better with long hair. Or maybe it's just the translucent Emulator garb...

So...can we agree that the most important stuff Alto did for "the cause" involved inspiring Sheryl and Ranka? 'Cause that's how it looks to me... Hikaru also got captured by the Zentradi and got a good look at how they operate...Alto didn't even get that, Luca did. And even he just passed out. I mean, his JOB is to keep his eye on the enemy and yet, when he's INSIDE THE VAJRA SHIP, he sees nothing. Stupid Luca. Alto managed to survive the war, he was present during most of the desicive battles, and he managed to get off a few important shots here and there...but he was hardly the most important factor in any of those battles (except fr the ones where Ranka would've died if he hadn't been there), and his political involvement was minimal (consisting mainly of listening to Birla natter on).

Agreed. I want Macross Chronicle to SELL SELL SELL!!! It'd be a tragedy if they had to cancel the project before it's complete or something... That said, I'm working on translations of sections of it, and I'll put those up here when I'm done. So at least everyone will get some of the info, if not the scrumptious pics.

Who was your favourite Macross Frontier character?
Gubaba replied to taksraven's topic in Movies and TV Series
Correction...A FEW PEOPLE thought they could see a humanoid shape in it. I think most of us didn't buy that. At least, I didn't. On the other hand, I also thought that the Global ABSOLUTELY HAD to be the SDF-1, so it's not like I ever knew what I was talking about... 'Twasn't me. I have an air-tight alibi. -
I take exception to that remark, since it was because of me that it got started...
-
It'd be nice, sure, but let's face it...the cover is most disposable part of the magazine. Yes, it should attract the eye, but ultimately, most of the covers will end up getting thrown away, and the pages will be kept in the binder.

Best Macross animated production (1982-2008)
Gubaba replied to Nexx Stalker's topic in Movies and TV Series
Wait...I thought it was "Best Macross Animated Production" (as opposed to, y'know, comics, radio dramas, games, failed live action movies, etc.), not "Best-Animated Macross Production." If it's the latter, I want to change my vote to MacZero. -
Hey, Physica got his own page...if Kinryu gets lumped in with a bunch of nobodies, then that will be no one's idea of great justice...
-
You know Macrosshare, don't you? (If not, check the iMacross IV thread...there's a link there.) The album is kind of a mixed bag...some of the stuff is awesome, some of it is pretty meh. I had high hopes for Ishtar's "Voices," but it barely sounds different from the original. And there are too many non-Macross people singing on it. I wish they'd gotten Akino Arai and Chie Kajiura instead of Ali Project and Yoko Ueno...
-
Definitely! It was also written by Yoko Kanno, so there: Even if you don't apprciate her work on Plus, you like it in Frontier and Dynamite 7...and two out of three ain't bad. I agree with you on Zero..."Yanyan" is about as catchy as it gets and even that isn't *quite* a j-pop song. I like a lot of the Macross Zero battle music, and I really like a lot of the island-style music, which fits perfectly. And, um...Macross 7 DID have orchestral BGM...if you got annoyed because it's all taken from MacII and MacPlus, then you only have yourself to blame for being just too darn perceptive.
-
Well, they kind of did. Have you heard "Macross the Tribute"? Basara sings the Macross theme! Mylene sings "Love You Once More"! Ishtar sings "Voices"! Minmay sings "Angel Voice"! Too bad all the other songs are by non-Macross people...although hearing "Seventh Moon" sung by MIQ is an interesting what-if (as in, "What if Macross 7 were trying to be more like L-Gaim or Dunbine?") as is the guy who sang the Dragonball Z song doing "Planet Dance."
-
...and even that was just a fan-made mashup... It sounds great, though.
-
I was a little surprised by that, too, and wasn't sure how to translate it...hte original line says ゼントラ界 ("Zentra kai"): "Zentra World." Anytime the word "Zentra" turns up in the notes, I translate it as "Zentradi."

Who was your favourite Macross Frontier character?
Gubaba replied to taksraven's topic in Movies and TV Series
It all started here...with VFTF1's trip to the far-flung future of late September 2008 (although, in retorspect, it appears that he went to a parallel universe...). -
I've been wondering for a few months now...ever since you said on another thread WAAAY back that you disliked Plus's music because you didn't like techno...do you also not like the orchestral music in it? Because (to me at least) the score is as Macross-y as you can get. And on a somewhat related note (and this is NOT directed at VFTF1), I like the music in Zero A LOT, but the orchestral pieces grab me more than the songs do. "Life Song" and "Crack Radio," I could do without, but "VF-Zero" is incredible, as are "Macross Track," "Counter Clockwise," "Prayer," "Mori no uta," and a few others. As for the other songs, of course "Arkan" is superb, and "Yan Yan" is cute and fluffy.

*sniff* Okay...thanks. *wipes nose and blinks back tears* But will we finally get to see the Vajra beauty men...? -
The notes for "Interstellar Flight" are taking a little longer than I expected, so here's tracks six and seven... Translating the fan mail was easier than I expected. I took a little liberty with the e-mail from "Miss G." Literally, she said that "more training" was needed, but the word she used is generally used for animal training, so I thought to myself, "Hmmm...how would the Animesuki Forum Ranka-Haters phrase this?" and came up with what I thought was a pretty good line. NEXT: The diet that's sweeping Frontier: Kira☆Slim!

ALL RIGHT!!! "Hey Luca, do you like apples?" EDIT: On second thought...I guess I shouldn't be so happy. My favorite character is unpopular. But I guess that's what you get for liking a character who spends the last few episodes in a coma. At least Asuka got to kick some major ass in End of Evangelion...maybe in the Macross F movie, Nanase will come out of the coma early, commandeer Luca's VF, and single-handedly destroy Battle Galaxy before getting ripped into gooey little chunks by some Vajra under Grace's control...
