What is the "official language" of Macross
Gubaba replied to justplainZero's topic in Movies and TV Series
I think we have to go by what's written, since of course everyone is speaking Japanese... But in SDFM you see some English and some Japanese (some Chinese, too...but only at Nyan Nyan). In DYRL, even though "Do You Remember Love" is sung in Japanese, it's written out in English. All the computer screens in Macross Plus are in English. Ditto 7. In Frontier, Sheryl writes in French, Ranka in Japanese, and all the official documents are in English. Which all leads me to believe that even if English isn't the "official language," there's a strong English presence in the world of Macross, but there are at least a few other languages that have survived. That said, I think Mr. March's theory is probably closest to the truth. -
Last month, actually. So I guess can be as warlike as we want...until the Zentradi come in February, that is.

Macross Frontier News Thread IV *Read 1st post*
Gubaba replied to azrael's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Gad...they're releasing Bobby's song as a single...? Something tells me that that will be the first Frontier audio release NOT to go Top 5... -
My theory on it is perhaps a little unfair...I just assumed that the majority of of people here got into SDFM when they were thirteen or younger, so the idea of a sixteen-year-old piloting a robot seemed, well, perfectly reasonable. Now those same people are in their thirties, and the idea seems a little more ludicrous. I also think that a lot of people like to project themselves onto the main character, which is a little bit easier if that character is the same age as the viewer. Of course, this is all just speculation on my part...

Patience, patience...I'm currently still working on Miss D.J., and the Nyan Tra liner notes, AND the Long Range Emigration Fleet page from Macross Chronicle... The Beauty of Halfwitism!

LIVE ACTION ROBOTECH (WB gets the rights)
Gubaba replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
And let's hope it stays that way. -
That's impossible, because I hated Gundam Wing but I love Frontier.

Has Humanity truly surpassed Protoculture?

Not yet... And now I also think I need to get around to watching Aquarion. And Legend of the Galactic Heroes keeps taunting me whenever I open the "anime" folder on my hard drive... -
Dude, you explained it perfectly. I'm TOTALLY getting those words tattoooed on my forehead.

Well, at least the Dimension Eaters aren't sentient... Whoa. Wait a second. Whoa. I think I've just come up with the plot for the next Macross series... -
Bah, the answer is simple...just book a trip to Tokyo for July 2009, and another one with the final movie(s) comes out.

Wow, that's damning with faint praise. What about art, sir? ART!

I think Voices is a better song, but Aimo is certainly more versatile...we've had four different versions of Voices (five if you count the instrumental "Myung Theme") that all sound more or less the same, but Aimo O.C. sounds markedly different from the other versions.

Hey, if the mac F movie is "only" as good as the Plus movie or DYRL, I'll be ecstatic. Hell, if it's even as good as Escaflowne (which at the very least LOOKED stunning, and had a tremendous score), I'll still be satisfied. Haven't seen Aquarion yet, so I can't comment...but if it's as weird as everyone says, it'll probably be right up my alley.

The latest issue of Macross Chronicle has a whole page on the protodeviln...give me some time to take a good, thorough look-see at the info there, and we'll see if there's anything new.
-
Yeah...I always thought that was kinda weird. First time I watched the show, I hated it ("Why hell are these fighter pilots such big celebrities???") but on reflection I realized that...well, it's kind of the reverse of Minmay saving the day. I'm still not sure if I liked it or not, nor am I sure if it really "works." Maybe if they'd done a few follow-up stories that explained it a little better...

It's not just naked karaoke, it's naked SPACE karaoke!

Y'know, I think it was Renato some time ago that brought up a Japanese magazine (that had an interview with Itano) that called Gundam a "manly" anime while Macross is a "boyish" one...which (as I believe Renato pointed out) is simply ludicrous. That said, we all know that there's only one TRULY manly anime out there: "Grave of the Fireflies." But yeah, glancing at the article (didn't have the patience to lug out my kanji dictionary and actually READ the damn thing0, I wondered what they meant by 21st Century standards. The Macross world FINALLY has cell phones...isn't that 21st Century enough?

Completely explodes your head on the big screen, doesn't it? I was lucky enough to see it three times in the theaters. Seeing it on DVD, well...it just isn't the same.

Man, you must DESPISE my new avatar...

Yes. Yes, it REALLY IS that good. Subjectively, I love Eva. Objectively, it was a much-needed shot in the arm to the TV anime industry. While many may not like the tropes of Eva that became de riguer for mecha shows afterwards (I liked them in Eva, but didn't like them as much in Brain Powerd and Eightron), it was still heaps better than the kiddified world of early-'90s TV anime. All of which, of course, has nothing to do with criticism of Frontier...and as for that, pretty much everyone here has been giving voice to shortcomings of the production, which more or less disproves yellowlightman's premise.

 [Homer Simpson Voice]It's funny 'cause it's true.[/Voice]

Oh, sorry...I guess I was a little unclear. I started off talking about "Mari Iijima Sings Lynn Minmay," and ended up talking about "Fukuyama Fire."
-
With all due respect, I think you're missing the big point...if the movie is good, fun, interesting, and satisfying, who cares about anything else? (This applies to both DYRL and the upcoming F movie.)
-
To be fair, a lot of us show that same kind of hatred as well. Certainly, I hope that neither Shadow Rising nor the Live-Action Robotech Movie get made. One could argue that Robotech's continued existance threatens Macross availability more than Macross availability would threaten Robotech, and thus our position has a more reasonable basis, but still...some of us take it too far (myself included).
