Macross Frontier Series Discussion Thread *READ 1st Post*
Gubaba replied to azrael's topic in Movies and TV Series
Richard Birla, is it you? -
If they can keep Mikimoto to the same schedule they've kept Yasuhiko to, we won't have a problem. If he ends up being more like, say, Sadamoto with Eva or (GOD FORBID!) Shirow with Appleseed (his abandoning of that title STILL really frosts me), then we're in trouble. As for cancelling your Gundam Ace subscription, who knows? They could get Yasuhiko to stay on and do "Zeta Gundam the Origin."

What Current Anime Series Are You Watching? v2.0
Gubaba replied to Duke Togo's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Well...yeah. It's important to remember that Zambot was the first show that Tomino both wrote and directed. As such, it sows him beginning to go on the path of bleakness that would lead to Gundam, Ideon, and Dunbine But it is indeed only a beginning. I really like the show, though. It sags a bit in the middle, but the final bunch of episodes get really good. -
Hmmm...it seems that Alan Moore's curse on the film lacked some teeth, eh what?

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Gundam Show Thread - MSG thru GQuuuuuuX
Gubaba replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I think you're being a little unfair to Gundam...there are quite a number of viewpoints that come through in the show, but they generally don't arrive through characters making speeches...it's more in how people act. The people on the White Base are generally heroic, but not all the time. They can be vicious, or petty, or just plain exhausted. Likewise, Char is not a mustache-twirling villain who you love to hate. But who you really want to watch are the minor characters. The Zeon soldiers who are just trying to do their job. The Federation soldiers who can be callous and brutal. The Zeon leadership is conniving, manipulative, and fascist, but the Federation is uncaring and ineffectual. It seems like you've noticed this, and are wondering what anyone's actually fighting FOR? Well, there IS something worth preserving in the Gundam world. You'll have to get pretty far in the series before you get to it, but trust me, it's there. On a more superficial note: you didn't think Matilda was hot? You're a tough man to please. I think you'll like Hamon (who's due to show up quite soon, if you haven't gotten to her already), though. At least, I hope you will. I always thought she was pretty cool.- 3772 replies

Man...I never noticed that... *head explodes* (I think I was too preoccupied wondering about frogmen with machine guns and "All You Need Is Love" to pay attention to that.) We never found out exactly how long Number Six was gone, did we? A lot could have changed in that time... It seems like a natural fit...Patrick McGoohan plays a secret agent on one show, and then when it ends it's immediately replaced with another show where he plays an apparent secret agent, albeit one trying to retire. I've only seen a handful of episodes of Danger Man myself, but Drake does seem to be the same rock-jawed individualist that Number Six is...but maybe McGoohan just lacked dramatic range. I have to say that in the latest "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" book, I appreciated the Prisoner references the best. "Johnny...he'd had a few...said he'd landed an MI5 contract designing kit for some Welsh set-up. D-Dream inducers. Killer balloons. Yarooh, eh?"

You could go about it two ways: either get the magazine from your nearest Japanese book store or online vendor ('course, you should probably make sure they're carrying it first); or else, if you're not in a hurry and don't care about the magazine's articles, you could wait for the collected volumes. If the magazine is quarterly (and it is) and "Macross the First" will be 80 pages or so each issue, we'll probably get one or two volumes per year.

As David Hingtgen predicted, I'm quite happy. But, shouldn't the Valk be green...?

Dude! VFTF1's watching the show for the first time. Why are you trying to spoil the plot for him? That sucks. <_<- 3772 replies

What, as in: "Who is Number One?" "You are, Number Six." Well...that's certainly the implication in the final episode, but I think that was probably a staged mindfvck on the part of the Village authorities as well. That said, I think he DID get out at the end...but he's clearly in no state to go around spilling secrets, so...score one for the Village. The conundrum I've always wondered about: Was Number Six really John Drake?

Don't worry, you're not SUPPOSED to understand it yet. This is art, sir. ART. All will be revealed in time. Although you might want to spend some time wondering why Char and Sayla know each other. I think the English version flubbed that one badly. The Zeon's nickname for the White Base, "Mokuba," literally means wooden horse. In context, I think it's clear they're referring to a hobby horse. A nice, derogatory name that makes it sound weak and ineffectual. Instead, the translators went with "Trojan Horse," which as we all know was an instrument of war at brought about the end of a ten-year-war. It certainly fits for the White Base, but I can't believe the Zeons would call it that.- 3772 replies

Well, there wasn't any chapter of Unicorn in the December issue of Gundam Ace, but since the chapter from the November issue was clearly not the end of story, it's still ongoing. I've seen nothing about any translations of it, which I entirely understand...it's already huge and I've been led to understand that the author's writing style is rather difficult. As for the movie/series/whatever rumors, I've heard them, too, although I'm not sure if ANYONE (outside of the Bandai higher-ups) knows if there's any truth to them. Certainly, the merchandising continues unabated...there's a new MG model of Sinanju. Personally, if they are going to to an adaptation of an existing novel series, I'd much rather see Mobile Suit Gaiagear made as an anime. The Universal Century timeline needs a better send-off than G-Saviour.- 3772 replies

I still have it around...somewhere. I haven't looked at it since I started studying Japanese, though. As I recall there were a lot of pictures in it that were rather puzzling. Wish I knew where exactly it was, I'd pull it out and the confused 13-year-old inside me would be immensely gratified to understand what the hell was going on.

Unsurprisingly, I like the sub MUCH MUCH better than the dub...I wish a sub track had been released with the U.S. DVDs, but we'll probably never see one. And yes, Icelina is Garma's girlfriend, and yeah, she's one of the prettiest in the show. I have a real fondness, though, for Crowley Hamon, Ranba Ral's wife (who I believe you haven't met yet). You might like Lalah, as well, but she doesn't show up until near the end of the series. Overall, though, I think Macross has better female characters. From a feminist perspective, they tend to be stronger and better-devolped. From a non-feminist perspective, they're just hotter.- 3772 replies

If the words "Number Six" and "free" used together in the same sentence DON'T automatically make you think of the Prisoner, you need to go back to pop culture school. You'll be missed, Mr McGoohan. Be seeing you.

Yes. It says "TV Anime Version Super Dimension Fortress Macross - COMPLETELY COMICALIZED!" I would imagine this will take Mikimoto a number of years to do (hell, "Gundam the Origin" has been running for more than seven years, with at least two more to go)...makes me wonder what'll happen to "Ecole du Ciel."

Rest in Peace, Lord Boddole Zer
Gubaba replied to Mercurial Morpheus's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Really? I think of her first and foremost as Sayla (and Haro!) from Gundam...but then, I found out about her death from Gundam Ace, so I suppose that's to be expected. -
If the USS Hammertime is commissioned before the USS Vanilla Ice and the USS NKOTB, then we live in an unjust world.

I'm currently listening to Maaya Sakamoto's new album...along with the same recording of "Triangler" that we all know and love, there's also a beautiful recording of "Blue Aether." I'm not sure that that alone is worth the price of the album, but it's certainly lovely.

Now THAT'S more like it! Okay, I'm beginning to get excited about it now.

Why? What's wrong with talking about KLANG KLANG? KLANG KLANG is your favorite character, isn't she? So why all the hate for KLANG KLANG? KLANG KLANG is cool!

I think the problem is that while Macross has a number of fans (even in the English speaking world!) who were never exposed to Robotech, Mospeada has far fewer...and Southern Cross has virtually none. As such, it's easy to keep RT off the table when talking about Macross, but less so for the other two.

What was the first anime that you watched?
Gubaba replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I remember that one! The one that sticks in my mind most, though, is the one where Keyop (or however you spell his name) gets possessed...that one freaked me out big-time; I'm talkin' watching-the-show-from-behind-the-couch terrified. By the way...after Robotech finished, the anime bug had bitten me HARD, but the only anime I could find on TV was on one of the Spanish stations: Gladiadores del Espacio (AKA Ginda Reppu Baxinger). I loved that show to pieces...did anyone else see it? -

Yeah...the Char shower scene with Garma hanging out always made me...wonder. But there are, well, not PLENTY of cute girls on board the White Base, but there are some. Sayla pretty in a bitchy princess sort of way, and Frau's rather cute as well. In Zeta Gundam, Kika turns out to be a bit of a looker, too, although IIRC, she only shows up in one episode. Still, I think Miharu is probably my favorite, although she doesn't stick around very long. Still, for relationships, my favorite has to be Ranba Ral and Crowley Hamon. Was she serious when she was flirting with Amuro? Or was it some kind of game she and her husband play? I never quite figured out exactly what kind of "understanding" those two had, but I thought it was interesting. Oh, and don't worry. Char will notice girls soon enough. Unfortunately, nearly every girl he hooks up with is total jailbait.- 3772 replies
