  1. Fitting something into continuity is fine, wrecking continuity is a different subject. Gundam 0080 fits into the timeline perfectly well, 08th MS Team doesn't. I have to say that I've never heard "Zion Air Kommand" before...weird. But before 2001, there were no "official" romanizations for the names in Gundam, except in the translation of the novels. Some of those (like "Zeon") stuck, some of them ("Zak," "Vig Zam," "Sha Aznable") didn't. The translator includes a little note in the revised 2004 reissue of the novels to the effect that "Bandai finally realized they were sitting on a multi-million dollar international franchise, and finally decided they should figure out how these names should be spelled.") I'm fine with most of them (especially "Zeon," because "Jion" sounds dumb in English, and "Zion" has too much political/religious significance). "M'Queve" is a little too baroque, but I could never figure out a way to romanize his name that would give English speakers any clue on how to pronounce it. Generally, whoever they got to come up with the official spellings (I'm guessing it was Mark Simmons) did a good job with a bunch of names that sound generally ridiculous. So I wouldn't call the Anime UK versions definitive. Anime UK, Animag, Animerica, C/FO, Baycon summaries...all of them used different romanizations. That some English speaking fans got attached to certain spellings that later didn't "make the cut" is kind of unfortunate, but whacha gonna do?
  2. Um, yeah. At least, I hope it was clear that that's what I meant. I mean, nerve impulses ARE electric, right?
  3. Oh, I'm sure it will be. Just as Gundam the Origin is the best thing in Gundam Ace. If you really want to get up to speed on Macross Frontier, you can buy the DVDs, buy the two volumes of the comic that are out, or download the episodes. If you want to get up to speed before Macross Ace comes out tomorrow, I'd suggest starting your downloads now... (And personally, I really wish they would re-adapt Macross F...I really don't like the artist doing it now.)
  4. Well...the RX-78-2 was well-nigh invincible until Zeon brought in the Gouf and the Dom. Amuro wasn't a very good pilot when he started either, but the Zaku bullets just bounced right off him. Even Char had a tough time with him in the early episodes. Anyway, ll the Zeon soldiers talk about the Gundam being so fearsome, but if you've got the RX-78-3 and RX-78-4 up in space, the RX-78-6 slicing through Zakus in Zeonic Front, Mass-Produced RX-79s running around in the jungle, three Blue Destiny Gundams swatting Zeon cruisers like flies, and countless others...well, jeez, why is the White Base so important? And why did the Federation bother with the vastly inferior GMs? Full disclosure: I really didn't like the 08th MS Team for a number of reasons, only one of which is that I think it really messes up the continuity of the One-Year-War. MS Igloo, on the other hand, is very cool. I love what they've done so far, and I'm really looking forward to the rest of MS Igloo 2. And that's fine. Upgraded and custom Zakus, Rick Doms, and GMs make perfect sense. But no one's saying that the Full-Armor Gundam saw any action during the show, it's just a cool design. Unlike, say, the RX-78-3 and RX-78-4, which later actually DID show up in a comic. For a while, Sunrise was very careful not to mess up the line of continuity from the RX-78-2 Gundam to the RX-178 Gundam Mk. II. The Alex never officially "debuted," and probably got lost in the shuffle after the war; the existence of the GP01, 02, and 03 was suppressed; but what about all the others that have come out since? By all rights, the RX-178 should be known as the Gundam Mk. XXII or something.
  5. Sounds good to me. Oh, and barring any more impossible kanji combinations or serpentine Proustian sentences, I might actually finish the page today.
  6. I thought it was "air power." But that's just a guess.
  7. Yeah, but the original Gundam is only available in the U.S. as a dub, too...I think Loner may be right in saying it's whatever they were exposed to first. And I think ultimately, Wing in the U.S. failed to do what Bandai wanted it to do, which was to get people interested in the entire franchise, and move their devotion from Wing to U.C. And that didn't happen. I lay a lot of the blame at their feet, though...with something as complicated as Gundam, releasing everything out of order will only confuse all but the most hardcore fans. Plus, they started too late. If they had released the original series in, say, 1993 instead of 2001, it would've sold more, I think. Or, at the VERY latest, they should've released it IMMEDIATELY after the initial AnimeVillage.com blitz of the Movie Trilogy, 0080, and 0083 (and waited on releasing 0083 until after they finished the first series). there's also the problem that 0083 has an ending that doesn't make sense unless you've seen Zeta. Although being able to leap into Zeta right after finishing it would've solved a lot of those problems. Unfortunately, 0083 came out here in '98, and Zeta in '05. Not a good strategy. Yeah, that's kind of my problem, too. And that's also why I wish they would stop revisiting the One-Year-War in comics and the like. It's clearly set up in the first series that there is only one Gundam (and, let's face it, it is nearly indestructible, at least at the beginning of the show). And Zeta introduces the Gundam Mk. II. But if you factor in all the side stories, comics, and games, you've got a One-Year-War with DOZENS of Gundams (even mass-produced types) running around kicking ass, which really doesn't fit with the story as originally presented. And then when Bandai decided that EVERYONE in each series needed to have a Gundam...well, I'm not too thrilled with that idea. Although I'll admit that a lot of them look pretty damn cool.
  8. I covered all of this in the Transformers Movie thread, but if I can't be arsed to go through dozens of pages to find it, I'm betting you can't either. So, to summarize: I didn't like any of the human characters, the plot stunk ("We need to get the McGuffin out of this dam because we know the enemy will attack!" "I know, let's move it through the big city at lunchtime!"), the herky-jerky camera movements made it almost impossible to actually SEE anything, there was too much comedy (all of which fell flat), the ethnic stereotypes were lame (Look! Black people are FUNNY!), the Transformers themselves got just a couple of lines each (robbing Jazz's death of any impact at all...plus, the dialogue in that scene was lame), and the final battle was too small scale...I mean, if you're going to have a full-on giant robot fight, why contain it to two city blocks? I've seen Godzilla movies that have more exciting battles. I like dumb fun (epecially dumb fun with robots) as much as the next guy, but Transformers was too much dumb, and not enough fun. Or, as the photoshopped movie poster had it: "No script. Retarded plot. Get ready for some LOUD NOISES." (I will admit that I really liked the freeway battle, though. If the rest of the movie had been like that, it would've been great.)
  9. Good ob! It's a a real b*tch of a sentence, isn't it? For the "part of mobility," I figure it's when mobility is the part you need the most, i.e. more than strength or firepower. I also don't get the "transformation of only one part." But "hovering" Is THAT what 空力制御 means? What a complicated way to say it...later on the page, just just say ホヴァーリング, which is much easier.
  10. I don't think anyone is saying it's possibility...the OP was just asking if people wanted to see it. There are lots of things that I'd love to see that no one will ever make. That doesn't stop me from wanting to see 'em.
  11. I suspect it's something like that...could you imagine trying to translate Han Solo saying "Hand me the hydro-spanner" into another language? You'd probably look it up say "'Hydro' means 'water'? That can't be right..."
  12. Man, they even include Gundam? Seriously lame. More generally, I have to say that I agree with everyone who's talked about how great Ishtar looks. Macross II had some excellent character designs. Hibiki is kind of generic, but everyone else is awesome.
  13. Thanks! I still feel as if I'm looking at this sentence through a glass darkly, though. Let me work on it for a while more and see if anything becomes clear...
  14. For me, the second funniest bit was the Transformers poster (As Roger Ebert said about a different film, "I hated hated HATED this movie!"). The funniest bit was this comment from Anonymous: Some people need to learn what makes a genuinely good movie...
  15. I started in on the Gerwalk section: http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?...mp;#entry695196 However, nearly everything after the first sentence is an approximation, because I can barely understand (let alone translate) the following ungodly sentence: パイロット筋電流からその無意識運動を測定し、思考の延長線上で操縦できる(コンセプトはYF-21のBDIシステムに近い)ため、機体の一部だけを変形させて空力制御を行うといった複雑な操縦も可能で、ガウォーク形態もそれ自体の利点を求めて運用されるだけでなく、機動の一環で利用されるケースがみられた。 Yes, that is all one sentence, several of the kanji compunds aren't in either my kanji dictionary or my kana dictionary, I can't keep track of the modifying phrases, and it seems like most of the verbs are passive. If I ever meet the guy who wrote this page, I'm going to punch him in the nose. In other words, any help would be appreciated.
  16. Yeah, that's bothersome. I remember seeing a print advertisement once for "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing 0083," which just made me facepalm. I've also noticed (pure anecdotal evidence, not tryin' to make a blanket statement) that it seems like a lot of people who prefer Robotech to Macross also prefer Wing to U.C. Not sure why, though.
  17. I don't think it will. Judging from the the contents page, I think the primary MacF comic (i.e. the adaptation of the series) is moving over from Shonen Ace ( that's what it LOOKS like, at least ), but it's already almost halfway through the series. It's also, IMHO, not very good. The other MacF comics look to be gag manga.
  18. Yeah, Gundam can be a real pain, because there is SO MUCH of it. When I first got into Gundam, all we had were the original TV series, the three movies, Zeta, and two or three episodes of ZZ. It's grown considerably since then. One of these days, I might get around to watching things I haven't seen, like G-Gundam, Wing, X, SEED, and 00...but for now I have three criteria: If it's UC, I'll watch it. If it's Tomino, I'll watch it. If it's a live action movie using leftover costumes from Starship Troopers, I won't watch it. That's still a pretty vast swath of stuff, but it makes it all a little more manageable.
  19. I doubt it...I mean, they shoved Mobile Suit Gaiagear out of continuity to make way for G-Saviour...if that didn't spark his wrath, I don't know what would. And it should be mentioned that your speculation about the origin of Usso's charisma has been pretty much discounted. I still like believing it, though.
  20. I agree with ChrisG; V Gundam is pretty great. Some of the mobile suits look pretty goofy (and I'm not too fond of the character designs either), but the story is awesome. It IS bleak, though, so lock away the razor blades before you watch...
  21. I haven't read it, but it's up at macrosshare, if you want to check it out. I'm not sure how official it is, though...it was made in America, and I'm not sure it was exported back to Japan. And to answer the opening question...I wouldn't be terribly excited to see a MacII sequel, but I wouldn't be terribly excited about seeing a direct sequel to ANY Macross series. Keep pushing forward, Studio Nue, keep pushing forward...
  22. Ah, but doesn't Macross Plus go out of its way to demonstrate that ONLY crazy people can be successful fighter pilots?
  23. After they repel the first Zentradi attack (and Hikaru and Minmay get stuck in the engine block), right before they fire the main cannon, when you hear a voice saying in English, "Enemy ship is approaching course of 1-0-7," THAT'S the VE-1. It's in fighter mode, and you only see it from behind.
  24. I wouldn't be too worried...the first couple of issues of Gundam Ace had a lot of filler, too ("Just in case you didn't know, here's a two-page outline of all the Gundam series...and here's another two-page outline showing how they're connected...and here's yet another two-page outline showing the order they happen in!"). It wasn't until it went bimonthly in issue 5 that it really started getting good (IMHO, of course). I have an uncomfortable feeling that "Secret Visions" may be what Macross F would've been like in every episode had been like episode 8...but I hope I'm wrong. I also hope a Plus-related comic is in the works.
  25. I don't really care, either. I have to say, none of the accessories really appealed to me except for the "I [heart] MINMAY" keychain. I really want to get my hands on one of those!
