    While it is true that they have a brief Macross Timeline in Macross Ace that lists Macross II as 2090, and doesn't say it's an alternate continuity, I don't think this means that they're planning on bringing it in line with the others. Simple reason: Macross Chronicle still treats it as non-canonical. Chronicle is the Macross Bible, Macross Ace is the Apocrypha.

    1st Rule of Thumb: If the original DVD set isn't complete, it's a bootleg. 2nd Rule of Thumb: If there are more than five or six episodes per disc, it's a bootleg. 3rd Rule of Thumb: If it comes from Italy, China, Taiwan, or Southeast Asia, it's a bootleg. 4th Rule of Thumb: If the price comes out to less than fifteen dollars per disc, and the anime is something new and hot, then it's a bootleg.

    I went over the subs Hurin found, correcting little mistakes (like Millia being given English dialogue during her fight with Max, when in reality, she's speaking unsubtitled Zentradi, and the COMPLETELY screwed up final line of the movie: "Just a normal...love song," which those subs had as "Of course! It's a love song!"), and I found Misa's line to be one of the most dificult to render into English. More or less, what she says is, "A man or a woman, which one do you think is in charge here?" As far as I can tell, there is NO WAY to present this line as-is and make it sound natural in English. That said, I think it's possibly THE most important line of dialogue in the first section of the film, because, as it turns out, the ENTIRE MOVIE is about a battle of the sexes on a grand scale, and how the power of a "love song" (standing in for love itself) can bridge the gap and bring them together. It's an early foreshadowing of the theme of the film, as well as setting up Hikaru and Misa as zstand-ins for the Zentradi and the Meltrandi. The relationship between the two main characters is like the entire war in miniature. (I told you all I was a lit major, right?) Anyway, I don't want to derail this thread into a discussion of this line or the themes of DYRL (cf. the "Fokker/Focker" debacle in the Mecha Thread), but hey...someone asked, so I figured I'd answer.

    There are so many genuinely GOOD movies that I want to see, but never get around to going to (usually because they're only playing in two theaters in the whole city, and both of them are half-an-hour away), that I really can't justify going to see a movie that I know will be bad.

    I really want the Robotech narrator to shut up occasionally and quit treating me like an unobservant buffoon. "In front of earth, millions of Zentraedi warships are defolding..." "Yes, Mr. Incessant Narrator, I can see that. Now stop talking! I'm trying to watch the show, here!" As least Claudia/Narrator in Macross talks to me like I have a brain. Erm, you DO know that Macross started life as a parody of Yamato (among other things), don't you? There are quite a few similarities in both story and design. Yes, it's ridiculous. It's also a hell of a lot of fun! BOMBAA!!

    It's a "tsu," not a "shi." And it doesn't turn it into an English-style short "o." Just watch SDFM, DYRL, or MacZero again, and listen to how they say his name. It's F-OH-ker, not F-AH-ker.

    About eight years ago, I was talking to someone who was working on Tron 2 at Disney...she said the nickname for the project was the "New Tron Bomb." Things may have changed in the meantime, but I kind of doubt it.

    Looks good! I'm glad they're adding in these little touches and improving some of the less stellar stuff...(Pity they didn't do it with the original series).

    I hope you're right that it's just a write-off, but I kind of doubt it. Warners HAS to know that Robotech is somewhat popular, not just in the English speaking world, but also in South America and China,* and Hollywood these days is all about international sales (which is why good dialogue is no longer an important consideration in Hollywood movies). Someone, I'm sure, thinks they can make a bundle on this if they can sell it to the right countries. *At least, a large portion of Robotech fansites seem to be South American in origin. And a while back, I recommended Macross to one of my Chinese friends. Later, he said he liked the first section of the story (with "Ri-ka" and "Li-sa"), but didn't like the second part, with the hovertanks. After explaining to him that what he was watching wasn't Macross, he went back and found Macross Zero. I don't think he ever got the original SDFM.

    True...but at least he didn't say, "This needs to be fixed: cut out the world being destroyed, have Roy get sent back to earth for hospital care, and all the Valkyries that blow up are controlled by robot pilots." LA lot of what made Macross great came through in Robotech. Gatchaman was equally great, but you'd never know it from watching "battle of the Planets." Ditto Goshogun and Macron-1. And Mazinger Z and Tranzor Z. At the very least, he recognizes quality when he sees it. Now why he wants to put that "ol' Macek magic" all over it is beyond me, but at least he helps spread the word. I'm with Schizophrenic MC on this one. In 1985, the home video market couldn't support a long anime series, and no company thought anyone in the west would be interested in seeing cartoons in another language with subtitles. SOMEONE had to crack through the floodgates of presenting anime to the west without the heavy revisions and edits of "Battle of the Planets" or "Voltron." "Speed Racer" kind of did it first, followed by "Star Blazers," followed by "Robotech." And a few years after that, the floodgates broke, and unedited anime started to enter the western marketplace. Robotech didn't do it first, nor did they do it best. But they got a lot of people interested in anime who moved on to bigger and better things. Of course, a lot of that was done in reaction AGAINST Robotech, but if Robotech had been just another really kiddified story, no one would've bothered. The fact that it at least went part of the way towards leaving the original intact makes it an important baby step towards the way things are now. Now again, I can't for the life of me figure oou why anyone would PREFER Robotech (apart from pure nostalgia) to the originals, nor can I understand why anyone would want a continuation...but for 1985, Robotech was pretty revolutionary.

    And who decided on those differences? Big West? Tatsunoko? Harmony Gold? Animeigo? I suspect the last...certainly, I never saw, for example, "Exsedol" until the Animeigo subs. As for you second question, of course no one told me. But how is フォッカー a hidden reference to フォッカー? Again, if it's an intentional misspelling, it's intentional ONLY for non-Japanese speakers. If you read the Japanese text, the two names are the same, which is not true of Stonewell Bellcom" vs. "Rockwell" and the like It's more akin to メガロード, which I've seen rendered as either "Megaroad" or "Megalord," but is a single word in Japanese. To be fair, there are several readings of some words in Japanese. The new Macross 7 comic in Macross Ace could be either "Macross 7th Code" or "Macross 7th Chord." But since the "o" sound in フォッカー is pronounced like the "o" in "cone," well..."Focker" doesn't sound like that. The way they pronounce his name in Robotech is closer to to the Japanese pronunciation than the ADV dub is. I think the animators make mistakes all the time. Remember the infamous Riber/Liver mix-up? But still, clearly I'm in the minority here, so I'll drop it. Just...please, everyone...STOP MISPRONOUNCING HIS NAME! Say it like they say it in Robotech, and you'll be right. (Oh, and "meet the Fockers" was called "Meet the Parents 2" in Japan. Not very helpful, huh?)

    Yeah, that was my point. MS Igloo really seems to be focussed on two things: very cool and realistic mecha designs, and the tragedy of war. I guess if the Zeon episodes had a happy ending in the midst of overwhelming defeat (at least, all the main characters survived), then I can see MS Igloo 2 perhaps having a tragic ending in the midst of overwhelming victory... The mobile suits fared well at Odessa. I'm not so sure about the tank drivers.

    I don't know how to respond to that...unless you're making a joke, that's kind of a silly argument. Someone took the Macross scripts and translated them for Harmony Gold. Just because that person transliterated the name correctly (and the Imai model kit poeple didn't) means that it's no longer a Macross name...?

    I think it would. Macross the First take up more than a third of the issue, and if you've seen the first episode of SDFM, then you don't need to know any Japanese to understand it. There are a lot of nice pics of models and toys, a really great Tenjin picture, some picture heavy Frontier articles...it goes on. And most of the thing is comics, anyway. It's not THAT hard to understand what's going on. The one thing that I really want to read but can't (yet) in it is the Macross Frontier short story, "Cosmic Egg," which is a prequel of sorts, about Alto, Michael, and Luca before the first episode of Frontier. Pages of tiny-fonted text frighten me...

    Here's another one I thought was really cool: A lot of the shots with the Macross in them really give you a good idea of just how damn BIG it is. (And can you tell I'm enjoying my scanner? ) To be fair, Mikimoto didn't draw any of the Frontier manga. As for those, well...I think Secret Visions LOOKS really good, and there's another (very, very short one, featuing the Nyan Nyan mascot girl) that looks really nice...all the others are fair to middling. And I'm not sure if I like the style for "Macross 7th Chord" yet. Basara looks fine, but the other characters don't look terribly Macross-y.
