The big problem is that there really weren't any good short Macross comics (at least none that I've come across) until Macross Ace came out, and even then, the MacF Outisde Story is the only real standalone. Well, besides the one about the girl going to see the May'n and Megumi concert. The Macross Guide Book (which "Throbbing Accident" came from) also had some 4-panel gag manga in it, but I don't recall any of it being very funny. That said, I couldn't understand much of it the last time I looked at it. There was another, similar book, but I don't recall it having any manga in it... ...... Ah, I knew they were here somewhere! Here's the Macross Guide Book: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/books/series_guide.htm And the other, similar book: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/books/series_encyclo.htm

If I find the book (or, more likely, buy another copy), I'll definitely check it over. It's always those little random bits that are the hardest, aren't they? I'm forever thinking, "Okay, I know nearly everything that's going on, I could explain it to people perfectly, but...there's the one little throwaway line that I just can't figure out. It has nothing to do with anything, but until I get it, I'm not finished." And then I spend days or weeks (or, in the case of Miss DJ, months) trying to "get" it...and finally, when I do, it totally wasn't worth the effort.

Man...I remember that...it's in the Macross Guide Book, one of those thick, small, square books. I still have it somewhere...I should probably try to dig it out... Anyway, thanks!

I'm with Roger...the higher-ups must know what they've gotten themselves into...you can't own the property for over a year and then suddenly burst out with "I didn't know this thing was 85 episodes long and covered three generations!" Clearly, they know what they have, they know the challenges, and they're probably going to forge ahead anyway. But remember the tried and true adage of Hollywood studio execs: "Nothing is impossible for the man who doesn't have to do it himself." Why bother about things like that when it's much easier just to hire a bunch of writers (most of whom come quite cheap) and say, "Hey you! Take something out these 85 episodes and turn it into a three-act movie structure!" You get ten or twelve people all working independently on that, and you'll probably end up with enough ideas on how to move forward with the project. Besides, why worry about dumb things like story, when it's the giant robots that'll REALLY drive 'em to the theater. Only losers and lit majors worry about things like story.

Should I read the Watchmen before seeing the movie?
Gubaba replied to David Hingtgen's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
No, you're right. In every trailer I've seen, I know exactly whre in the comic each scene is taken from. And it all looks quite faithful, but... As Alan Moore has said on numerous occasions, Watchmen (unlike, say, 300) was designed to show off all the things you could do in comics that you couldn't do in books or films. And while the plot is fine, the real star of Watchmen is the technique. The shifting colors, the transitions from scene to scene, the little stuff hidden in the background that you only notice the second or third time through, the way the dialogue and captions comment on the scenes unfolding, the way that a hint in "Under the Hood" becomes a bigger hint in the Silk Spectre memorabilia collection...there is too much in there that simply CAN'T be done in a movie, and I'm not sure why anyone would want to try. And you all know the ending has been changed, right? (SPOILER TAGS ADDED FOR DAVID HINGTGEN'S SAKE) To say that because Snyder did a good job on 300 (which I guess he did...I hated the book, and I hated the movie even more; so I can't say that the movie wasn't consistent with the tone of the comic) makes him ideal to do Watchmen makes no sense to me. It's like saying, "Well, film director X has made a movie based on a novel before, so that makes him the right guy to do another novel-based movie." Comics are a medium, not a style or genre. Plus, I have yet to see any film of an Alan Moore comic that managed to capture what is special, interesting, and most complex about his writing. People keep trying, and people keep failing. V for Vendetta came the closest, but still didn't quite pull it off. I've seen nothing to convince me this will be any different. -
Hush, you. Or else I'll think of some way to tie Robtoech: The End of the Circle with Fleet of the Strongest Women and make your head cave in with a wet, ploppy sound.

And what if it's just no good? -
Since I appear to be the only person in the world right now with scans of the magazine... Here ya go.

Ah well, thanks for trying. As I said, I'll be ordering them soon anyway, along with Dreaming Prelude. By the way...the Spanish MacF "Liner Notes" that Magnuskn translated mention a Macross short story in the Studio Nue Entertainment Bible, but neglects to mention whether it's in Volume One or Two...does anyone know? Or do both volumes have Macross stories?

What Current Anime Series Are You Watching? v2.0
Gubaba replied to Duke Togo's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
I liked it too when I saw it back in the '80s, primarily because nobody had any access to the Mospeada TV series. Although I thought Flashback 2012 did esstiantially the same thing and did it better. i.e. the reused footage in FB2012 was actually EDITED (and rather cleverly) rather than just strung along whether it fit the song or not. I was glad to see Stick and Aisha together, but Jim and Mint as a couple just kinda creeps me out. -
I didn't my postcard out in time...so I feel rather envious.

Well...personally, I can't use it because it's Windows-only...but anyway, there's a newer version. called Perfect Dark. Anyway, if no one can get the download, it's not really a big deal...I'll be ordering the books used soon, but AmaZon.co.jp won't ship them outside of Japan, so I've got to send them to one of my friends, and then she'll send them to me... In other words, it'll be a while before I get them, and I'd like to start on them as soon as possible.

Thank you!

What Current Anime Series Are You Watching? v2.0
Gubaba replied to Duke Togo's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Easy way: Galactic Patrol (Book 3), Gray Lensman (Book 4), Second Stage Lensman (Book 5), Children of the Lens (Book 6). Then, if you want, go back and read the first two (Triplanetary and First Lensman). That's the order in which they were written, and the first two are meant to be a very long prelude to the "real story" of the last four. Not-as-Easy Way: Read the first chapter of Triplanetary, then skip ahead and read books three through six. All you need to know from the first book is there, and all you need to know from the second book can be summed up in the sentence, "An Arisian gave the Lens to humanity." First Lensman is the only really direly turgid book in the series...it really tried my patience, which is saying a lot...I read James Joyce and Thomas Pynchon when I want to have fun...impatience is usually not a problem for me when I read. -
It usually is...you've seen Mikimoto and Miyatake's original Macross 7 designs, haven't you?

Macross Frontier and prior Macross mysteries
Gubaba replied to Syngyne's topic in Movies and TV Series
Different strokes for different folks, I guess...I was never bothered by it. Of course, there were OTHER things in Macross 7 that had me alternately scratching my head and pulling my hair out, but the nature of the Protodeviln wasn't among them. ..Because nothing is closer to science fact than planes that turn into robots, giant humans with purple skin and blue hair, and virtuoid idols that can somehow control wires and hypnotize and entire city, right? And I've yet to come across any hard SF featuring a giant tuna. Just to be clear, I love Macross...but Gregory Benford, it ain't. -
I guessing that neither of you recognize sarcasm when you see it...

...doing his best impersonation of Mikimoto. I have to confess, I would've really liked the designs (and the story) for Megazone Part II a lot better if it had been a completely different project. The young rebels vs. The Establishment plot was done pretty well, and the character designs were engaging enough...it just didn't look like Megazone. I admit I never saw Part III, mostly because when I was in high school, I thought the "Let's pick up the story hundreds of years later"-type sequel was a total cop-out. I've since come to realize that some good things can come of it, but it's still usually a sign that the story is finished, but they're trying to squeeze the last bits of monetary value out of the name.
