Should I read the Watchmen before seeing the movie?
Gubaba replied to David Hingtgen's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
As Dave Gibbons has said, the plot's ust a MacGuffin. I don't think the focus is even on the characters, really...it's HOW the story is told, the cross-cutting from scene to scene, the way the text comments on the action, the dozens of smiley faces, how the backup pages throw light on hints in the main comic, the tremndous amount of puns and wordplay (my favorite being the "Black Freighter" back cover ad for "The Veidt Method": "I WILL GIVE YOU BODIES BEYOND YOUR WILDEST IMAGININGS." You certainly did, Veidt. You certainly did). There's a wealth of stuff to go back to and search for, and a tremendous amount of information packed into each panel. THAT'S what good about it. As you say, the story kind of slowly founders for the first nine issues, and then suddenly rushes to a conclusion. And while the characters are deep by 1980s comic book standards, they're still rather flimsy. It's the technique that I believe put the book on Time Magazine's list of the best novels of the 20th century. -
I kind of doubt it here...the comic moves pretty fast compared to the TV series. The first two volumes (eight chapters) cover episodes 1~10, and the latest volume ends with scenes from episode 18. I think two more volumes, and they'll be done. Five volumes for a 25-episode TV series is pretty compact...the Evangelion comic cut out A LOT from the show, and, currently at volume 11, still isn't finished. Yeah, what REbirth said. It's episode 14. Just before Brera rescues Ranka.

So what did you think...? -
The Vajra, don't smash up the Global when they launch...instead they, launch it along with their other ships. So yes, there's a big Quarter vs. Global battle in the comic. Now, Vajra driving the Global doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but the scene itself is pretty awesome.

No offense, man, but mother and daughter in bondage gear together is kind of...disturbing... I like Mylene's tattoo, however.

I just picked up Volume 3 of the Frontier comic. I have to say that Hayato Aoki's art for the series has improved by leaps and bounds. It's still not great (and Noshi, the artist of "Macross F: Secret Visions" is better, I think), but it's nowhere near as just-below-average as the first volume was. I also liked that he didn't destroy the Global right away, but had a big ol' Macross vs. Macross battle.

Hmmm...you might be in for a long, long wait, then. Although it could be up somewhere. I haven't seen it around, but then, I haven't looked, either. Amazon might be your best bet.

Scour the old comic book stores. It came out in English back in '90 or '91. Three issues, put out by Viz. They colorized it, though. I don't know if that's a deterrent or a draw.
-
Just remember that there will probably be three or four more sheets for the VF-27 that will be included with upcoming issues...you're not getting the complete article.

You just gave me an image of Claudia finding Ralph Wiggum slouched in a bar singing "My Boyfriend's a Pilot" to himself...
-
It seems insane, doesn't it? But that's what it says: 輝の休日 Maybe we'll get a minute-by-minute account of him getting drunk after Kaifun pulls Minmay away...

No, but I think a remake of Watchmen is due out early next year...
-
The start of the "Super Galactic FanClub." Looks like there's some kind of prize involving the character designer, but I'm too lazy to pull out my dictionary and try to read the teensy-weensy eyestrain-O-vision™.

Yeah...I know Kakinuma worked on it...did Aramaki? I have to say, though, that I only really liked Eternal Story. It seemed too complete to really engender any sequels, although I thought they got around the definite finale in a rather clever way. Once they finished off Lufy's story, I lost interest, and I never saw Rhea Gall Force or anything after.
-
What about Gall Force? The story isn't very Mospeada-ish...but the designs sure are.

Someone has Taken an Interest in Macrossworld...

Well...kinda... -
Most of the obnoxious Sheryl fans here either calmed down or left, thankfully. I do like Sheryl better than Ranka, but insulting people for liking a particular character is just tacky. Unless your favorite character happens to be Kaifun. Luckily, that's never happened.

Gurgling audio isn't the problem...Doug Bendo himself is the problem. He spends almost four hours talking to Tom Bateman, peppering him with questions he's in no position to answer, only to wind it up by calling him a loser for liking Frontier. Classy. Real classy. (That said, there were some good moments in that one...unlike most of Mr. Bendo's rants.)

It's only a matter of time now...didn't you notice my name for the pic...?

The problem is that there is literally no end to incredibly bad videos...eventually, one or the other of us will have to pull out "Electronik Supersonik" by Zlad, "Don Quichotte" by Magazine 60, "Hard Rock Hallelujah" by Lordi, "Love Machine" by Morning Musume, or "We Built This City" by Starship...and none of us wants that. So I call truce. And I'll leave you with a band I used to hang out with. The violinist? She kissed me once.
