"Dreaming Prelude: My Fair Minmay" has a footnote that explains why vinyl records are the exclusive audio medium on the Macross, but I haven't translated that section yet, so I don't know why yet (I'll get to it eventually). Really, if they were ever going to redo any sections of the episodes, I think the mid-to-late '80s would have been the perfect time. Studio Nue should've had some more money in their pocket thanks to DYRL, and animation technology hadn't progressed much, so making the new scenes fit in with the rest of the show would've been easier to do. Again, as Azrael said, no one wants "SDF Macross: A New Translation." And yeah, for Eva, they almost didn't spring for Miyamura to come out from wherever she lives (I've heard that she's also got some health issues, but nothing major, and I don't know the details). But yeah, I think that would have killed it for A LOT of people (myself perhaps more than most...Asuka's my favorite character, and as far as I'm concerned, Asuka IS Miyamura). But thankfully, they finally decided to they needed her. Hell, the sale of hundreds of 1/6 scale Asuka figures ALONE should've been able to pay for her airfare and hotel costs...

Yes, it's the same song. Macross 7 is peppered with Macross II (and Plus) music. And no, Macross II is no longer considered canonical.

New Yamato Anime to Open in Japanese Theaters in 2009
Gubaba replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Wow...you actually brought up Yamato 2520? I thought the staff had gone back in time and erased it from existence... I might possibly still have a VHS tape of the first episode somewhere, though... -
Please do. The Waverider rocks.

I never got the impression that anything was difficult for him (except seeing through tachyons). Where did you get this information?
-
You know it's supposed to be fitted with a grand piano as a control system, right? Unless the ending was a joke...
-
"Mio." Mind you, I have no idea WHEN during Macross 7 the story is set...it may be during the series, it may be after. There's a lot about that series that's currently unclear to me, most important being the question of if it'll be any good or not.

New Yamato Anime to Open in Japanese Theaters in 2009
Gubaba replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Yeah...I liked the Yamato Saga as it was. "Final Yamato" really should STAY Final, I think. Still, I'll definitely watch it. Might be interesting. -
It'll take the DVD years to recoup the costs, though...the advertising budget alone must've been astronomical. And everyone in Hollywood is now beginning to think, "Are super-hero movies over...? What'll we do now?"
-
"FEVER! FEVER!" Of course...how could I forget that classic moment...
-
I think one of the problems is that the audio is dated, too...a lot of the slang the characters use is very '80s, and I believe they talk about Minmay's "LPs" in the series (or is it ust in Miss DJ...?). I think Macross the First is the closest we'll ever get to a reanimated version...and most of the dialogue comes from the TV script anyway, so it's sort of like having the original audio...

While everyone raises good points regarding a remake/remodel, for me, the biggest drawback is that the VAs for Hikaru and Kaifun are dead, and Mari Iijima lives in L.A. Considering that they almost didn't get Yuko Miyamura to do Evangelion 2.0 because she doesn't live in Tokyo anymore, I doubt they'd be willing to fly Mari out from halfway across the world, even if she were willing to do the role, which is a big if. As such, different Minmay + different Hikaru = not Macross (to me, at least). And, as Mr. march pointed out, there's creators' sensibilities to consider. Look at Gundam Evolve Episode 5 (written by Tomino), which gives Quess a happy ending with Hathaway. Or the third Zeta Gundam movie, which likewise ends in a more upbeat way than the series did. And as Bri hinted at, Kawamori wasn't even one of the main (credited) writers of the series. Matsuzaki was the script supervisor and probably had the most say in the matter of writing the story. Ishiguro was the official director (although I've always had the feeling that he really let the young'uns take control), and probably had the most say. Tomita wrote the majority of the episodes (including most of the ones everybody loves the most. Of course, he also wrote Macross II...can't win 'em all, I guess). Since then, Kawamori has positioned himself as "Mr. Macross," but I think that's more hype than reality as far as SDFM is concerned. It was clearly a strong group effort.

Sorry, I was thinking of...what is it..."Jizen"? Anyway, it's 自然. And the whole thing: 自然再生計画. I admit that I tend to do the Chronicles contents pretty mch the moment I wake up on Wednesday mornings, and I try to do them quickly, so sometimes I'm a little off, either due to fuzzy brain, or simply not wanting to bother to check my kanji dictionary. On reflection, I assume that it is indeed referring to "nature reclamation," but that seems like a strange thing to have a Technology Sheet for.

I appreicate politeness and civility, but "Mr." Gubaba...? I'm a little furry rodent that hangs out on the shoulder of o pink-haired, 14-year-old rocker girl...no need to call me "Mr." "The Japanese version with good translations" is only available as a bootleg, and is likely to remain so as long as Harmony Gold owns the trademark to the name "Macross" in the U.S. (check here if you want more info and/or express your outrage). There are some pretty good fansubs available on-line. Conversely, you could buy the R2 Japanese DVDs, and download the subtitle package put together by Macrossworld member Xeros. As for my project...yeah, I'll get to DYRL, but it most likely won't be until summer of next year. And I have neither the resources nor the desire to a dub...sorry. I think someone else was working on one, however...I haven't kept up with the project, but the samples I saw on youtube were astonishingly good.

You're probably right...I always think of Tostuzen as being "naturally," but it CAN refer to "nature," right?

Select scenes would be kind of cool, but redoing most of the series (let's face it, A LOT of the episodes look terrible) would, as Azrael said, be too akin to the Zeta Gundam movies for comfort. I mean, I enjoyed them, but as a one-off experiment, not the new standard. It occurs to me, though, that if they DID do a "Macross Evolve" kind of thing, they'd probably take scenes that already looked good in SDFM and make them look better, rather than redoing Max and Millia's wedding march or something...

Mobile Suit Gundam 30th Anniversary
Gubaba replied to Apollo Leader's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I think that's rather difficult...there's that whole "half the human population gets wiped out before the first series even starts" factor to contend with. Mark Simmons might have a ballpark figure, though. Plus, we never really find out if Yazan died or not. -
Yeah, I've always stayed away from the toys because I have too much of the collector's streak in me...if I started getting them, I'd have to try to track down ALL of them. (I do have most of the Hasegawas, however). I'd rather stick to books and magazines for the time being, because that gives me translation fodder. I don't know why people keep clamoring for this...yes, a lot of the animation in the original series is crappy. Yes, a visual revamp would bring in new fans, while the use of the old audio would ensure that the project didn't go off course. But I can't for the life of me think of any instance where this has been done. I don't think there are many advantages for the creative staff, and the audience would mostly likely be disappointed. Now, if they wanted to do something a la Gundam Evolve Episode 15, where they redid part of a TV episode with new animation, that'd be fine. But for the whole series? I think Macross the First will fit that bill nicely enough.

Dragon Ball movie rescued from dev hell?
Gubaba replied to bsu legato's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
No, he was one of the biggest anti-Scientology crusaders I'd ever met, but then he became quite the Battlefield Earth apologist. Rather strange, don't you think? Anyway, Dragon Ball. Are they actually planning to release this to theaters, or is it going direct-to-DVD in the U.S. while they try to milk it in Europe and Asia? -
Mobile Suit Gundam 30th Anniversary
Gubaba replied to Apollo Leader's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
That'd be cool. I also want Sound Boosters so that Char can bark orders three times louder than a normal VF-19. Someone needs to come up with a mecha version of the Chinese zodiac... "You're a Gundam (1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003). You are often reluctant upon starting a project, yet master the necessary skills in fifteen minutes or less. Quick to anger, you sometimes wander off to sulk, but come back when needed by your comrades. You have a aversion to authority figures who slap you around, unless they're hot, red-haired babes. Your best match is with the Dragonar. Avoid the Ideon."
