Can we have a Sheryl-shipper vs. Ranka-shipper boxing tournament? -
The Transformers 2 Thread--A Michael Bay thread

Wait wait wait... Dude...that's a VERY bad idea...remember what happened to Star Wars when they tried that? -
Archie Comic book love triangle FINALLY getting resolved
Gubaba replied to Einherjar's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I don't think the '70s are that old in Archie terms. If you talk about "old Archie comics," I'm thinking fifties. And I think you're being too harsh on what is essentially a children's comic. It's for children who want to be teens, and really not for anyone else. That said, I agree with you about the characters aging. I always thought Doonesbury was pretty cool because the characters actually got older, got married, and had kids who are now growing up. -
The Transformers 2 Thread--A Michael Bay thread

I liked the robots' faces in the movie. But yeah, if my favorite thing about a transforming robot is its face, that ain't good. -
The Aim for the Top! Gunbuster Thread v2.0
Gubaba replied to Noriko Takaya's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Very nice! Although I think it would've been better if you'd used tat actual title logo for the back...maybe that's just me. I've been rewatching Gunbuster for the first time in a very long while...I'd almost forgotten how wonderful it is. -
Is Anime insulting your intelligence?
Gubaba replied to Excillon's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
If it's daring and experimental and hits more than it misses, it'll DEFINITELY gain my attention. -
Wow! Very cool site, Ginrai! I still need to get around to watching MZ Part III...I have it, I just haven't been particularly eager to see it...

No, it didn't...because it botched the ending. "Yay! Rain on Arrakis! Plants are growing! Now all the sandworms will die and there will be no more Spice and interstellar travel will be impossible! Yay!"

Digest? No. Understand? Yes. Um...no one told you about Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse Dune, I take it...?

I remember reading the review of Plus Vol. 1 in Animerica way back when, and, as I recall, they said something like "Finally! Anime characters that aren't afraid to have noses!" Which I think sums it up nicely.

Be fair now...his sketches for Macross 7 were pretty damn good...before the designs got "finished" by someone else to make them easier to draw quickly.

Hallelujah, it's raining Minmays!

I've started working on the Episode Commentary for Frontier, by Kawamori, printed in the book 2059: Memories (pages 90-93). I don't know how long it will take me to do them all...maybe a few weeks, if I'm lucky. I want to give special thanks to Renato, who checked my translations, corrected some errors, and gave useful tips. Of course, if any errors still remain, they're mine and mine alone. #01 - Close Encounter Script: Hiroyuki Yoshino / Storyboard: Yasuhito Kikuchi, Shoji Kawamori / Production: Takayuki Tanaka / Art Direction: Yuichi Takahashi, Risa Ebata In regards to the TV series, we're aiming for it to be the culmination of everything from the Macross series up to this point. The director (Yasuhito) Kikuchi and I did the storyboards ourselves, and we were able to put in all the little items we wanted to see. With the two of us doing it, 20 minutes just wasn't long enough! (laughs) We tried many experiments in the first episode. The parts that worked out well we brushed up and developed further in the following story. #02 - Hard Chase Script: Hiroyuki Yoshino / Storyboard: Yasuhito Kikuchi, Shoji Kawamori / Production: Kiyoshi Matsuda / Art Direction: Masahiro Sekiguchi, Takashi Ikari We tried Ranka singing, and Sheryl stepping in to add her her own voice, and I thought "That's it!" Apparently (Yoko) Kanno had the same response during the recording. I did have a feeling it would go all right, but I actually shiver when I hear them sing together. The was when Kanno-san began rapidly sending me duet songs. (laughs). #03 - On Your Marks Script: Hiroyuki Yoshino / Storyboard and Production: Takao Abo / Art Direction: Futoshi Fujikawa Well, someone always gets locked in at some point in Macross (laughs). While we'd had people be trapped before, we'd never done it with three people. The "Tuna Bun" design was a labor of love for our scriptwriter (Hiroyuki) Yoshino and the artist (laughs). The "chest portion" of the episode was described by Yoshino, and the artist decided to imagine what it would look like. Griffith Park is a reference to the landscape of the Griffith Park Observatory in L.A. #04 - Miss Macross Script: Hiroyuki Yoshino / Storyboard: Kazuki Akane / Production: Takahiro Majima / Art Direction: Ryouma Ebata The main points here are really Ranka singing "My Boyfriend is a Pilot" and Klan Klang. Because Klan's destructive power had been assumed from the beginning, it was decided not to put her in the first three episodes. For the "My Boyfriend is~" section, the young animators took charge. Thanks to these artists, the characters move swiftly, even in something like a singing scene, which is usually rather restrained (laughs). #05 - Star Date Script:Hiroyuki Yoshino / Storyboard: Yasuhito Kikuchi / Production: Takayuki Fukuda / Art Diection: Hiroki Marufuji The scouting trip to San Francisco and Las Vegas, accompanied by Director Kikuchi, provided a terribly charming background for Sheryl. I can completely understand why people would fall all over themselves for her (laughs). In order to give Ranka, having just failed in the Miss Macross Frontier Contest, her debut into the entertainment world, we made the street concert scene. We were thinkng about what would push her to her chance to sing; of course it would be Alto's paper airplane...

Song Energy, man. Song Energy.

I haven't read it, but a few friends I trust have, and they said they were expecting Scientology in disguise, but instead it turned out to be pure dumb fun. I might get around to reading it one of these days, but probably not...

Oh, I'm sure it's incredibly lame...but I think it's kind of cool that they picked up on that detail. Everyone makes a big fuss about the cocaine use and the violin playing, no one ever talks about the pugilism or the monograph on different types of tobacco ash...

AMAZING! That's a real find! Megazone wasn't released until March 1985 and yet somehow Macek got ahold of it in 1984? No wonder Robotech is so popular...its creator is a magic man! Please. If you're going to spout BS, don't get all "read my lips" on us for not believing it.

Communists like L. Ron Hubbard? Since when?

You say that as though you think everyone else is going to disagree with you...

Misa was there. Vanessa wasn't.

Technically, that's not out-of-character...you rarely see him boxing in the stories, but he does tell Watson that he used to be a boxer, and does use those skills once or twice. (And did you know that Watson was previously a soldier, serving in Afghantistan? Maybe they should throw that into the movie to give it something of a "modern twist." )

I don't know about the Gundam Files, but I have the two books of Evangelion Chronicle, and there isn't anything about the games in those. That said, Macross Chronicle DOES have an (as yet unused) icon for "他" and they specifically state that's for games and things like that. I guess they're saving that for the end, along with "Glossary Sheet" and "Tribute Sheet."

Wait...which Gundam is U.C.? All of 'em. Except for the alternate universe ones. But I refuse to accept that those are really Gundam. Shammy: "Ah! It's Mr. Lingerie!" Vanessa: "Mr. Lingerie...?" Kim: "We were in the lingerie shop and..." That should jog your memory.
-
I have no idea what you're talking about...I only watch U.C. Timeline (why don't we have a "snooty" smiley...?) But Shinji's one of my favorite characters ever, so maybe I should give them a try... ka-BOING ka-BOING ka-BOING ka-BOING... That'd be awesome actually. Okay, that's it...I want a four-hour movie (so you get your money's worth) entirely about Nanase shopping for bras with an embarrassed Luca in tow. It'll be an homage to the "Mr. Lingerie" scene AND give the discriminating Nanase fan* what he wants to see most. Dude...it'll be A-MAZ-ING... *I assume there's only one of us.
