  1. No, I find it funny, too...in an annoying sort of way.
  2. Well, anyone arguing that Gundam (at least the U.C. Timeline stories) is realistic need to account for the Newtype theory. Perosnally, it's completely wonky, out-of-left-field stuff like Minmay's singing defeating the Zentradi, Newtypes, and WWII battleship getting refitted as space cruisers that make me love anime. No American science-fiction would ever get away with such bold steps into the realm of the ludicrous. If either Macross or Gundam had been a highly realistic story of war, I doubt I'd be much interested in either. It's the flirtation with the bizarre that makes them great.
  3. I'm not really sure why the Power of Love and Song overcoming all is difficult to believe, but the idea that humans born in space will suddenly evolve into a new form of human who will instantly be able to understand others' thoughts is realistic. Just sayin'.
  4. Yeah, I know. As I said on the previous page:
  5. Yes...it just doesn't get any better than the haunting "jet-ski sequence," does it?
  6. It's even better in context...there has been NO, I repeat NO chemistry between the two characters at that point in the movie, and earlier that day, the guy's best friend got eaten by a shark the size of a luxury yacht. Nothing like tragedy to grant you instant charm and the ability to make witty, flirtatious banter! (Yes, I watched the whole movie. If you see the clip above, and all the clips of the shark eating boatloads of people, you don't need to see the rest.)
  7. He's not. I've already done a preliminary draft of it.
  8. Yeah, I know. I always do that. "Who's Rick Hunter?" "What's a Veritech?" Just my annoying little way of reminding the RT fans where they are and what show we're discussing...even if this is the Robotech thread.
  9. Crap. I just watched episode six this evening, but I wasn't listening for it... They either said "Skull Shotai" or simply "Skull Tai." I *think* it was the latter.
  10. Here are the next three. Translating the credits is a real pain, so I'll only do it if enough people ask. Suffice to say that Hiroyuki Yoshino is listed as the scriptwriter for all 25 episodes, and for the episodes here, Kawamori did the storyboards for (naturally) episode 7. Again, many, many thanks to Renato for checking my translations. #07 is about half written by him. #06 - Bye-Bye Sheryl Background story arcs that continues to the end of the series. Not only an episode about Sheryl's earring, but also the first time Alto becomes aware of himself truly going into battle. The story's "school life" ratio lessened, and it shifted from that more familiar world to the world of war. I wonder, did we express that feeling? In terms of showing off mecha, we have the scene featuring the launch of the Macross Quarter. #07 First Attack For the previous two episodes, there had been no battle scenes, so we wanted to show the fight in a lot of detail. It seems like the Monster fans got especially excited. Because there had never been an episode in which the events unfolded entirely parallel to a concert performance, it was a worthwhile challenge. The deep resonance between the hearts of Ranka and Sheryl was first shown here, and naturally everyone got very excited about this. #08 - High School Queen We did the episode about Sheryl's underwear because Yoshino said that he absolutely HAD to do it (laughs). But Ranka's costume definitely came from me. Animal costumes are so common, so how about a vegetable...OF COURSE! A CARROT!, I thought. Likewise, because Sheryl taking the Entertainer Course at Mihoshi High would just be too predictable, we listened to the staff's desire: "We want to see Sheryl in an EX-gear!"
  11. The Orguss Valkyrie was in "Love Goes Away" and "Farewell to Tenderness." What's "Force of Arms"? And how can you be addicted to Protoculture? Didn't they all die out eons ago?
  12. All of this is beginning to sound like a Macross fans dream come true...which is enough to make me pretty sure nothing will come of it.
  13. Fixed. Officially, that view was invalidated after Plus and 7 came out, and DYRL was retocnned into a movie within a movie. Unofficially, I think his words still stand...
  14. Corrected subs for episodes 01~06 are up now, and available here: http://www.nyaatorrents.org/?page=torrentinfo&tid=67465 Please help us seed the batch torrent coming later this week! Thanks!
  15. Wow. If that story's true (no offense...I'm just a natural skeptic about these things), that could actually be good for Big West. Renegotiating the deal could work in their favor. That said, it sounds like HG is trying to play WB ("Here, YOU talk to them!"), which is kind of like a gnat trying to push an elephant up a hill. WB is bigger, stronger, smarter, wealthier, AND better-looking than HG. It won't work.
  16. Yes. And if they had REALLY wanted to be awesome, they would've had a Pink Pecker Team, too!
  17. Well...it USED to be...
  18. I'll agree to that. Fist of the North Star is one of the funniest anime comedies out there. EDIT: Hey, my 5000th post! W00T!
  19. Well, I think that's normal...for a 36- or 49-episode show, the music MUST be recycled over and over again, or else they're going to blow their budget on music. But yes, Kanno seems to be good about writing a few little pieces that will only get used once or twice throughout the show, which makes it seem less repetitive. But still, there's a lot of recycling of music in Frontier. But hey, it's good music, so who cares?
  20. My view on it (but in reference to Macross the First, not Frontier): I think it's the best way not to drive yourself crazy.
  21. Yeah. I won't go on about this, but the homages really started to die down after the first few episodes, and then Frontier really became its own story. Some liked it, some didn't, but I don't think anyone can legitimately say it was merely a rip-off of SDFM. Heh. I agree completely. I remember when I was twelve or so, and just getting hooked up with raw anime VHS tapes. I thought EVERYTHING was brilliant. Then, in the early nineties, I mostly got out of the anime scene. Later, when I got back, I rewatched some of the stuff I had thought was great and realized that, well, it wasn't. The shock of the new and unexpected, along with having it in a language I couldn't understand, made me think they were much deeper and more interesting than they actually were. And yes, conflicted (angsty, emo, whatever the hell you want to call them) teens are par for the course, and always have been. Just another one of Tomino's gifts to anime tropes... (I'm not really sure if it originated with him, but Kappei from Zambot 3, Amuro, and Camille are all whiny and have major issues. Not he may not have done it first, but he did it best. Until Eva, that is.)
  22. I'm not too sure about Skull, but AnimEigo definitely uses "Vermillion Team," not Squadron.
  23. And Breast Fighters! You can't forget the Breast Fighters!
  24. It's also "Skull Shotai." Kind of like the ranks, I think there's a disconnect between army and navy terms going on here. OptimusX could probably clear this up once and for all...
  25. I don't have the book, but the ad on the back of Macross Chronicle says the songs are scored for a full band (I assume they mean "rock band," but you never know...some of those songs have strings and horns, after all).
